AT&T to offer LG Optimus G Pro next month

LG‘s Optimus G smartphone was released last year for a variety of carriers, including AT&T, and enjoyed widespread success among consumers. Following it up, the phone maker created the Optimus G Pro, which we saw tipped in an FCC posting late last month. Now word has surfaced that this massive 5.5-inch phablet handset will be arriving at AT&T in May.

LG PRO

We saw LG’s giant Optimus G Pro handset earlier this year at the 2013 Mobile World Congress, and we got out hands on it back in February, giving it a quick review, which you can read here. Rumors concerning the handset have been swirling for awhile now, but we’re hearing that the smartphone will be finally hitting shelves via AT&T next month, replacing the current Optimus G offering.

Tips have been rolling in, and others are reporting the same thing as well, including the folks over at Android Central. The announcement could end up happening any time now, and according to the tips, the rollout date is said to be May 10, meaning there’s about a solid month of waiting left (assuming the rumors are true). Once available, this giant upgrade to an already popular handset could give HTC’s One quite a bit of competition.

The LG Optimus G Pro boasts a quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600-series processor, as well as 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space. The battery is huge, not surprising given the 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 full HD display, which will use more than its fair share of power. There’s a rear 13-megapixel camera, as well, and 4G LTE support. No word has surfaced about the handset hitting other carriers, but so far it seems like an AT&T release is penciled in.

T-Mobile announces iPhone trade-in special, gives you iPhone 5 for $0 upfront

T-Mobile has been making big changes lately, moving to rebrand itself as the “Uncarrier” and to do things in a way that is different from its competitors. It has made good on all that talk, revealing a trade-in deal for current iPhone owners: trade-in an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S and receive the iPhone 5 for $0. The special is in effect until June 16.

t-mobile21

The trade-in special will begin at T-Mobile stores April 12, which is this upcoming Friday. Only so-called well-qualified customers will be able to take advantage of the special, and will need to trade in either an iPhone 4 or a 4S. In return, the iPhone 5 will be priced at $0 upfront plus the monthly service fee.

The special is in conjunction with a Simple Choice Plan. If your iPhone 4 or 4S is in good condition, you could receive credit on top of the iPhone 5 up to $120, which T-Mobile says can be used towards monthly payments, towards an existing bill with the carrier, or to buy accessories from the company. The plan starts at $50 per month, and offers unlimited talk/text and 500MB of data. Another $10 will get you 2GB of additional data, while an extra $20 will get you unlimited data.

T-Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert said: “Our message to iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 customers is simple: bring in your device and trade up to iPhone 5 on T-Mobile. We’re making it incredibly attractive to buy an iPhone 5 by pairing an un-beatable upfront price and trade-in offer with Simple Choice, the most hassle-free and affordable rate plan in wireless.”

ASUS FonePad 7 opens to pre-orders in the UK on Friday

Back in February, ASUS revealed the FonePad, a 7-inch tablet with smartphone functionality and a design similar to the Nexus 7 (which ASUS makes). If you’ve dreamt of the day you could merge your smartphone and tablet into a single too-big-for-the-hip-pocket device and you’re located in the UK, you’ll be able to grab this device on April 26 for £179.99.

sg_asus_mwc2013_24-580x325

Pre-orders for the FonePad (not to be confused with the PadFone) will begin this Friday, with the device hitting shelves in the United Kingdom a couple weeks later on April 26. The tablet/smartphone hybrid runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and sports a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 framed in a body that weighs only 380 grams, a nice light weight for something this large.

Under the hood, users will find a single-core 1.2GHz Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM, as well as 16GB of internal storage space and a microSD slot for expansion. There’s 10-point touch support, as well as 3G and HSPA+ for the non-WiFi model. At some point we’ll be seeing an 8GB model hitting shelves, too. You can check out our hands-on review of the slate here.

And as we’re sure you noticed, the price is excellent, undercutting the newly announced Galaxy Note 8.0, which has a said price of $399 for the US. The ASUS FonePad 7, priced at £179.99, would be about $275 USD, a drop of more than $100 over Samsung’s competing device, making a pretty good deal for those in the market.

Google Play Music launches in Australia, New Zealand, and more

Earlier today, Google rolled out an update to the Google Play Store’s design, offering a cleaner, simpler interface that is easier and faster to navigate through. Now it has released another update, this time bringing Music to the Google Play Store in a variety of new locations, including Australia, New Zealand, and more, which you can check out after the break.

Music App

Android users in Austria, Australia, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, and New Zealand will all now find Google Play Music via their mobile device running Android 2.2 or higher, as well as online. This follows several other roll outs for the Play Store, including the launch of Play Movies in Mexico and India late last month.

A couple days before the launch of Play Movies in Mexico, Google rolled out Play Books in the country, offering international bestsellers and local titles. It also seems that Google will be releasing Play Store gift cards in Canada soon, with users in the country reporting access to a gift card redemption option.

In addition, Google also recently added info cards to Play Movies for actors, allowing viewers to pause a movie and click on an actor, pulling up his or her info card to see relevant details about his or her career and more. For now, the feature is only available to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich users on tablets, and isn’t available for all video content, but instead for “hundreds of movies” via Play.

Liquid Robotics unveils Wave Glider SV3 ocean robot

Liquid Robotics has introduced its Wave Glider SV3, which is touted as the first unmmaned ocean hybrid wave unmanned ocean robot that is solar-propelled. Because the ocean robot is unmanned, it can be sent out to areas that would be too tricky to send individuals, whether due to position or weather or some other factor. Because of the way the robot is powered, it can be used without stop for thousands of miles.

Screenshot from 2013-04-09 00:59:45

Liquid Robotics is hailing the Wave Glider SV3 as a technology that will help in the scientific research of climate change, ocean conditions, and more. The robot is capable of taking on harsh conditions, including hurricanes and cyclones, doldrums, and high currents, to name a few. As the name indicates, this latest edition builds upon the previous Wave Glider SV2.

The Wave Glider SV3 offers on-board processing, offering a way to collect and process data that wasn’t previously available. The ocean robot has a hybrid propulsion system composed of both solar and wave-powered energy generation, as well as an adaptable modular power system that can handle energy-intensive resources, such as running sonar. No word on how much this beast will cost you.

Liquid Robotics CEO Bill Gliders said: “The SV3 is a tremendous step forward in terms of what we can accomplish in the ocean and gives customers a competitive advantage to capture data in the most challenging ocean conditions. By providing the ability to deploy Wave Gliders across most of the planet and deliver ocean data in a new and cost-effective way, we’re enabling broad access to affordable ocean exploration.”

ASUS rolls out MeMo Pad 7 Android tablet for $149

If you’re in the market for a cheap Android tablet and the Nexus 7 is a bit too expensive, Asus’s MeMoPad 7 hit stores today for the low price of $149. A teaser video of the tablet was released back in February, and while it doesn’t offer quite the same level of hardware available on slightly more expensive tablets, it will certainly work fine as an ereader and casual browsing slate, or as a device for the kids to use instead of your more expensive devices.

asus-memo-pad-tablet-540

The MeMoPad 7 was announced in January, and so consumers didn’t have to wait too long for the slate to hit stores. If you didn’t see it, you can check out the teaser video attached below, which gives a decent glimpse of the device. Or, now that it is on shelves, you can head over to your nearest electronics retail store and see it for yourself in person.

For $149, users will get a slate running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with 16GB of internal storage space and a microSD card slot for further expansion. The 7-inch display has a decent-to-low resolution of only 1026 x 600. The front of the device has a single-megapixel camera for video chatting. All of the basic features you’d expect in a tablet are there, so users won’t find much to complain about, lower-end specs aside.

Inside, users will find a 1GHz VIA single-core WM8950 processor and 1GB of RAM, a rather significant drop from the $50 more-expensive Nexus 7′s Tegra 3 quad-core. If you’re in the market for a small slate to accompany you on your day-to-day dealings, saving up a little bit more and springing for a Nexus would be a wiser decision, financially-speaking. But if you’re looking to spend under $200, the Asus MeMoPad 7 is certainly a nice option.
