Distro Issue 94: Verizon Innovation Center and its pre-emptive strike against a one-track future

Distro Issue 94 The Verizon Innovation Center and its preemptive strike against a onetrack future

It’s quite easy to give Verizon a hard time for some of its consumer practices, but the carrier has a lab where it’s attempting to reverse the ‘dumb pipe’ moniker with next-gen connected tech. In this week’s issue of our tablet magazine, Darren Murph visits the outfit’s Innovation Center to catch a glimpse at what goes down inside. Eyes-On takes a gander at a retro-styled Fujifilm camera, Recommended Reading considers our cyborg future and Weekly Stat tallies online sharing. We won’t hold you up any longer, so get to downloading via those links just down below.

Computex 2013 wrap-up: Windows 8, tablets, Haswell, high-res displays, smartphones, earthquakes and more!

Computex 2013 wrapup Windows 8, tablets, Haswell, highres displays, earthquakes and more!

This year’s Computex certainly didn’t come and go quietly. From a 6.5-magnitude earthquake shortly after landing in Taipei to tons of tablets, smartphones, Haswell systems and more peripherals than you can shake a Taiwan dollar at, this has been one whirlwind week of hot and humid adventure. Unlike other shows abroad, this country’s massive computer exhibition is only growing in importance, as more manufacturers from both East and West choose to announce products and services here in the Republic of China.

The week was filled with unveilings both revolutionary and evolutionary — from quirky to crucial, there was a lot to take in. You’ll find many of our show picks at our Computex 2013 event page; there are dozens upon dozens of articles, hands-on videos and photo galleries to sift through, so set aside some time over the weekend and dig on in. We’ve also rounded up links to each and every related post after the break — click on through for all that and more.

Engadget and gdgt’s next reader meetup is in New York City on June 24th!

DNP Engadget and gdgt's next reader meetup is in New York City on June 24th!

Hey New York City, it’s been a while. We’re hosting another meetup in the Big Apple later this month, and now we’ve got help from our pals at gdgt — in fact, we’ve combined to form the Voltron-like Engadget+gdgt Live. We’ve got some big plans this time out, featuring tables from some of the biggest names in tech and lounges from Sony and Samsung Mobile. One smaller company will also get a chance to show off its wares, in the form of our Startup Contest, which will put it on the floor alongside some of tech’s top brands. And if all those tables aren’t enough to keep you busy, we’ll have programming featuring Engadget and gdgt editors discussing the state of the industry, along with some on-stage product demos. And, as always, there’ll be lots of sweet giveaways. Not too shabby for a free event.

The action starts at 6PM on Monday, June 24th at 82Mercer in Manhattan (the entrance, somewhat confusingly, is at 76 Mercer St. — but we have faith that you’ll figure it out). Snag yourself a ticket to the event by clicking here. Oh, and if you’re a sponsor who’s interested in getting on board — or a member of the press who wants some early access to the event — drop us a line at events [at] gdgt.com. We’ll see you in a couple of weeks!

Engadget Expand is coming to New York City in November, and you’re all invited

Earlier this year, about 2,000 of our closest friends in the San Francisco Bay Area came by and, together, we had ourselves a heck of a time. The first ever Expand was filled with electric cars, UAVs, great speakers and, of course, a plethora of great gadgets and giveaways. It was so much fun that we just knew we’d have to do it again. So, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. We’re very happy to announce that Expand is coming to New York City on November 9th and 10th. We’ll be at the spacious Javits Center, home of great events like the New York International Auto Show and the New York Comic Con.

And why should you attend Expand NY? We’ll have a huge show floor where you can get your hands on the latest gadgets and devices for consumers — plus a lot of things not normally open for public use. (Attendees of the first Expand got to try out the $2 million da Vinci surgical robot.) We’ll also have an agenda full of great speakers up on stage for you to listen to and to meet. Last time, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler kicked off a program full of amazing conversations, like a fireside chat with OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman. And, we gave away $25,000 to the creators of the Ziphius Acquatic Drone, winners of our first ever Insert Coin competition.
