Distro Issue 78: the ASUS TAICHI 21 and Turquoise Jeep’s Flynt Flossy

Distro Issue 78 ASUS' TAICHI 21, Nokia's Lumia 620 and a week with BlackBerry's Z10

We’ve seen our fair share of convertible notebooks and shape-shifting hybrids over the last several months, but one particular offering from ASUS stood out. In the latest issue of our tablet mag, we spend some quality time getting to know both faces of the TAICHI 21. Brad Molen goes in-depth with his first week back to BlackBerry while Sean Buckley discusses Nintendo’s digital content issues in Forum. Eyes-On gets modular with rucksacks, Recommended Reading recalls Monster’s loss of Beats by Dre and Turquoise Jeep’s Flynt Flossy dances through the Q&A. That’s just a few pages of another jam-packed edition, so pull up a cozy seat and download your copy via that weekly link of choice.

Beercade: Get Free Beer For Winning An Arcade Game

Beercade: Get Free Beer For Winning An Arcade Game

Imagine the ultimate fun time for most guys: playing video games and drinking Beer… Imagine no more, as McKinney Ten Percent has just introduced Beercade, an arcade game where players tug it out for a free beer sample.  The game itself is very simple with players choosing one of the five characters:  Hell’s Belle, Bad Penny, Angry Angel, Blanco Diablo and High Roller. The setting seems to be a Biker Bar, and the game play seems to be very simple.  The player who wins three rounds gets a free beer. The interesting part, the beer is dispensed into cups placed where coin slots would be. (more…)

Aol acquires gdgt: get those engdgt puns out of your system today

AOL acquires gdgt, expects you to get those engdgt puns out of your system today

Yes, the rumors are true! The gadget database and website launched by Engadget founder Peter Rojas and founding editor Ryan Block, gdgt, has been purchased by our parent company, Aol. On gdgt‘s blog, Block explains that the site will bring its community and core technologies to web properties like, erm, this one — in addition to its comprehensive product database, which we’ve been embedding since 2011. It’ll also team up with Engadget on live events throughout the year, which means more gadget-filled fests in cities like Austin, Boston and San Diego, along with the usual suspects, such as our inaugural Expand conference in March. We’ll have plenty more details to fill you in on later today, but you can hit up the post at our source link to see what we’re able to share right now. Let’s give Peter, Ryan and the rest of the gdgt team a warm Engadget welcome!

10 reasons you really need to be at Expand this March

10 reasons you really need to be at Expand this March
In case you haven’t noticed, we really, really want you at our inaugural Expand extravaganza this March 16-17! We wanted to take a moment and recap the highlights of the show we have planned so you have it all in one place (and because, let’s be real, everyone loves a list):

1) Even more reasonable ticket prices!

We want to make sure Expand is as accessible to as many of you as possible so we’re knocking the ticket prices for all of the above back to $50 if you buy them in advance. We’re also instituting day pass pricing for those of you unable to attend the show both days. A $35 ticket gets you into Saturday’s show plus our after-party from 8 to midnight, and only $25 gets you in for Sunday. Parents, kids under 13 get in absolutely free so please bring the family for a day of hands-on technology fun!

Of course, we know many of you have variable schedules and aren’t sure if you’ll be able to make the show ahead of time. We’ll also be selling tickets at the door for $60 for the full weekend or $40 for just Saturday and $30 for just Sunday. And if you’ve already purchased Expand tickets, check the email you used to register for info about a refund (we won’t leave you hanging!). If you didn’t receive the email or have other questions about your tickets, please hit us up at tickets at engadget dot com and we’ll help you out.

Distro Issue 77 hits the road with the Tesla Model S

Distro Issue 77 hits the road with the Tesla Model S

In April of 2011, we spent some time in the driver’s seat of the Tesla Roadster 2.5 Sport. Its throttle response and dashing good looks earned high marks, but the range anxiety left a bit to be desired. Now it’s the winter of 2013, and in the latest issue of our weekly, we settle in behind the wheel of the Model S to determine if Tesla’s refined offering has the chops to lead the EV fleet. Of course, these vehicles need a place to recharge, so Eyes-On visits one of the aforementioned outfit’s Superchargers that look to make roadtrips a reality for electric vehicles. Aside from the automotive features, OUYA devs sound off on the pros and cons of the console while we put both the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart and Microsoft’s Surface Pro through their respective paces. There’s much more than we can pack into a single paragraph, so visit your weekly access link to grab a copy.
