PSA: ZTE Open Firefox phone now available on eBay in the US and UK

PSA ZTE Open Firefox phone now available on eBay in the US and UK

The Spanish had first dibs on ZTE’s Open smartphone, but earlier this month we were told Americans and Brits would eventually be able to buy the Firefox OS device through ZTE’s local eBay storefronts. Well, the pages are now live, so in exchange for $80 or £60 (delivery is free), you can get yourself an unlocked Open in the eBay-exclusive orange hue; and, if the stock figures represent all ZTE has to hawk, it appears this initial batch will sell out before too long. We wouldn’t say the handset’s performance is good enough to disguise its miserly specs, but having a new mobile OS to poke around in for well under a Benjamin? Let’s just say that we’re having a hard time suppressing the impulse-buy urge.

[Thanks, Steve]

Engadget’s iPhone app has been completely rebuilt, and it’s available to download now!

Engadget's iPhone app has been completely rebuilt, and it's available to download now!

We’ve heard you, and we agree — our iPhone app has needed a re-envisioning, and we’re thrilled to announce that the fruits of a lot of behind-the-scenes labor can now be seen in the App Store. Engadget’s iPhone app has been completely rebuilt from the ground-up, with an all-new design taking center stage. Behind the new visuals, you’ll find plenty of new functionality. Here’s a quick breakdown on what’s new and what has changed:

  • Left and right slide-in rails have replaced the five buttons along the bottom, providing a cleaner view and the ability to slot new tools into those bars
  • The left rail provides scrollable, adjustable navigation, while the right rail houses media such as podcasts and videos
• Within an article, you’ll find one-tap access to comments and sharing options right at the top
  • Within the Share icon, you’ll also be able to save an article to Instapaper, Evernote, Pocket or into the app’s Read Later section
  • Added the ability to save all of the day’s stories for offline reading with a single tap.
  • Font size adjustment slider
  • One-tap access to send Engadget editors a news tip, and to send feedback to our developers
  • Support for Events (including Expand!) and recurring Buyer’s Guides

Our devs are also working hard right now to implement additional features (yes, beyond just tweaks and fixes) later this year. As for our loyal readers that rely on Android and Windows Phone, be assured that we’re overhauling those builds as well in order to elevate our entire stable to a new standard. Our hope is to have those platforms served with a redesigned app before the year’s end. Give it a download right here, and be sure to submit any issues to our support staff within the app itself (pull up the right rail -> Send Feedback). We’ll be poring over each submission in a bid to make things even better as we go. Thanks for reading, and enjoy! %Gallery-slideshow61513%

Distro Issue 103: Inside South Africa’s TV white spaces experiment

Distro Issue 103 Inside South Africa's TV white spaces experiment

In Africa, only 15.6 percent of residents have an internet connection and that figure clocks in below half of the global average. Google, Carlson Wireless and several other outfits are teaming up to employ Cape Town’s unused TV frequencies, or white spaces, in order to bring high-speed connectivity to the masses. Darren Murph made the trek to South Africa get a behind-the-scenes look at the project and his account nabs top billing in this week’s issue of our tablet mag. Eyes-On ogles Organic Transit’s ELF; Weekly Stat tallies up the heroes of YouTube; and Modem World pleads the Hyperloop’s case. Grab a copy from the source links below if your slate of choice hasn’t already alerted you to do so and get comfy for another large dose of tech e-reading.

But wait, there’s more! Joining us at Javits Center this November will be:

Help build the future of Engadget: we’re hiring!

Help build the future of Engadget

Help build the future of EngadgetHello there! It’s been a few months since we saw each other last, how’ve you been? (For those of you who have no idea who I am, my name is Ryan, and I used to be the Editor-in-Chief around these parts. These days I’m back working on the product side, in charge of designing and engineering the future of Engadget.)

I wanted to give you a quick update on what’s been going on around here, since by most accounts Engadget doesn’t look too different from when I returned earlier this year.

First, and most importantly, we’ve been working super hard behind the scenes to build some really great new stuff. We’ve launched a few small things on the site, but Engadget still has so much potential to evolve, and it’s long overdue. I can’t wait to launch some of our bigger initiatives this year.

However, I need some help. I’m looking for great designers (UI and UX) and experienced engineers (back-end or front-end), and a PM to bring the future to life.

Engadget’s parent company is backing me up in a huge way in making a big investment in your favorite technology news site. We’ve got some great things planned, and I’d be stoked if you threw your hat in the ring.

More soon!

<3 Ryan + the Engadget product team
