Google Hangouts update for iOS brings clickable URLs and sound alerts

Hangouts for iOS may have gotten off to a rocky start — evidenced by its poor ratings in the App Store — but it seems that Google is looking to right its wrongs in its first major update to the messaging app. Most significantly, the new version features clickable links in messages and in-app sound notifications, along with official support for iOS 6. Any badge count issues have been fixed, and you’ll now also be able to invite friends to join Hangouts via SMS. Add all these with a number of bug fixes, and they bring a good reason to give Hangouts a whirl… perhaps for a second time.

PSA: You can now use your Amazon account to log into Lovefilm

PSA You can now use your Amazon account to log into LOVEFiLM

You might be able to knock one password off your list, as you now have the option to log in to your Lovefilm account using Amazon credentials. The changeover is part of the online retail giant’s recently announced Login With Amazon initiative, intended to let you use a universal ID for its other websites or those of third party developers. To switch, you’ll need to follow the link at the source and enter both your Lovefilm and Amazon details, and may need to re-enter payment info as well. The company promised that your private data will remain “completely safe,” and said that any rental lists, bookmarks, viewing history and watchlists will stay put. On the off-chance you’re on Lovefilm but don’t have an Amazon account, the company wouldn’t be adverse to your creating one at the same time, in case you fancy physical disc media to go along with the streaming variety. That’s not the only change Lovefilm users may notice however, as the service has rolled out versions of its next generation streaming app — first seen on the PS3 — for the Xbox 360 as well as Sony Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players and home theater systems.

Google Search Android app updated with location-based offers, voice-activated music playback

Google Search Android app updated with locationbased offers, voiceactivated music playback

Jelly Bean users running Android 4.1 or later can now snag a few more features with Google’s Search app. The update (version number varies depending on your device) delivers three notable additions. The first tool pushes saved offers as you approach a redemption location, reminding you of forgotten deals when they’re most relevant. Next up is a new voice action, which lets you control music playback — both on your device and in the Play Store — by speaking to your handset. (Voice action tips also make a debut with this refresh.) A third addition enables instant access to information about television programming you’re currently consuming, assuming your HDTV is connected to the web and on the same WiFi network as your device. Get your download on at the source link below.

Discovery launches trio of TV streaming apps for Windows Phone

Discovery launches TV streaming apps for Windows Phone

Windows Phone 8 users whose TV habits revolve around MythBusters, Cake Boss and cute pets are in luck: Discovery has just posted three apps for their platform of choice. The new Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and TLC releases share the same basic template, letting fans check show schedules and stream either brief clips or a smattering of full-length episodes. All of the apps support Windows Phone’s live tiles, voice commands and calendar reminders, although they’re otherwise simple; they lack the second screen features we’ve seen in iOS versions. If you’re just hoping to watch some Auction Kings on the bus, however, you can get your fix through the Windows Phone store today.

Foursquare for Android and iOS now lets you check friends in, with permission

Foursquare for Android and iOS now lets you check friends in, thankfully with permission

If you regularly hang out with Foursquare aficionados, you’ve likely seen conversations grind to a halt as everyone dutifully checks in at the same restaurant. A fresh update to Foursquare’s Android and iOS apps could get those friends talking again by letting one of them check in the rest. Whoever arrives first just has to tag their contacts, who’ll be counted as if they’d gone through the check-in themselves. Thankfully, Foursquare tries to eliminate the privacy disasters that could stem from its new feature — the app won’t check anyone in without permission, and users can delete unwanted check-ins on the spot. Those comfortable with Foursquare’s safeguards can grab the new app through the source links.

Sony Music Unlimited for iOS gains offline mode, 320 Kbps streams

Sony Music Unlimited for iOS gains offline mode, 320 Kbps streams

Sony Music Unlimited is still a relative newbie on the iOS scene, but users will soon find a new revision that brings high-quality streaming and offline playback to the fold. According to Sony, version 1.3 of Music Unlimited for iOS is just around the bend, which will bring the ability to download entire albums or single tracks that can later be accessed within the app’s offline mode. Also new in the latest update, you’ll find high-quality streaming of 320 Kbps AAC files, which can be enabled in the app’s settings. Sadly, you can’t download high-quality files for offline playback, but at least iOS users can take solace in parity with the Android version.
