Woman Downloads 10 Billionth iTunes App, Thinks It’s a Prank

Apple hit the magic number over the weekend. The company reached 10 billion app downloads on iTunes, thanks in part to a recently announced prize for the person who hit that big, round number.

Gail Davis, a resident of Kent, England walked away with the prize, scoring a $10,000 iTunes gift card for downloading a free app called Paper Glider–actually, that’s not entirely true. “I have to confess it wasn’t actually my download, it was my daughter’s,” Davis told the BBC.

When Apple reached out to congratulate her, Willy Wonka-style, Davis thought she was being punked. “I had no idea, when Apple called me,” Davis says. “I thought it was a prank call and I declined to take it.”

And then she came to her senses. “I had a moment of blind panic but thankfully Apple called me back. They said it’s not a joke and you are the winner.”

iPad 2 Coming February 9th – Rumor

ipad_2_february_9_rumor.jpg

It certainly feels like the iPad 2 is coming in the next few weeks? In the wake of CES’s massive tablet lovefest, we’ve seen a parade of iPad rumors, all seemingly pointing to the fact that Apple would be unveiling something soon. And besides, Apple’s fairly regular release schedule pointed to a late January event (the first iPad was announced on January 27th of last year).

Here’s another interesting little potential hint. In the second beta of iOS 4.2, a thumbnail seems to actually give away the release date of the new tablet. In the past version, the iOS, the old calendar icon had a big “27” on it–the day in January that the last iPad was released. The new icon, meanwhile, spots a big “9.”

Could Apple be releasing the new iPad on the 9th of February? Seems like a long shot, sure, but in the world of Apple rumors, everything is fair game.

Lock Up Your Mac Mini

MiniMount.jpg

Tryten Technologies of Seattle, Washington, a physical computer safety company, is introducing the Mac Mini Security Mount. With it you can secure your Mini to a variety of security cable options rather than permanently mounting the Mini to your workspace or monitor. The design includes a LockBar with a high-security, seven pin pick-resistant lock. The LockBar can be secured with a Kensington-style security slot cable or with one of Tryten’s other cable kits.

The open design of the mount provides access to all peripheral connections and the disk slot, and maintains Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You can pick one up now for $67.70, or even cheaper if you buy in bulk.

iPhone 4 Switches to Tamper-Proof Screws

Pentalobe screws.jpg

Apple doesn’t want you to fix your own gear–it would much rather have you walk into a Genius Bar for repair, or just buy a new gadget altogether. The company has made that painfully clear all along, with non-removable batteries and other safety guards in place to assure that you don’t open up your devices. And now it has another trick up its sleeve.

The company has begun using Pentalobe-screw heads on its devices. The screws apparently first started popping up on MacBook Pros in 2009, assuring that no one could get the pesky battery out of the thing. Next up, they began appearing on last year’s MacBook Air, keeping the whole inside of the ultraportable off limits.

The screws were in place on a certain number of international iPhone 4 units, but not any of the ones that arrived in the first shipment of US handsets. Now, it seems, Apple has begun to install them on more recent phones.

Why is Apple going through all of the trouble? Simple–Pentalobe screwdrivers are hard to come by. iFixit, those perpetual gadget fiddlers, are offering a solution–the iPhone 4 Liberation Kit. It’s basically two screwdrivers–something approximating a Pentalobe and a Phillps–and all of the requisite screws, so you can remove the old one and stick in much more easily removed versions.

iPad 2 Retina Display “Too Good to Be True”

ipad 2 ces.JPG

Anyone else sick of all of this on-again, off-again with the supposed Retina Display for the iPad 2? It’s like a consumer electronics rom-com. Of all of the many rumors we’ve been seeing about Apple’s second generation tablet, none–save, perhaps, for the incredibly likely FaceTimey front and rear facing camera–has been more rampant than the Retina Display, the tablet’s adoption of the iPhone 4’s incredibly high resolution (about 326 pixels an inch) display.

Such a display would be have to be 2048 by 1346, reasons Daring Fireball–double the size of iPad’s current display. The site also reasons, it turns out, that the feature just isn’t coming in the next version of the tablet. “I asked around,” writes the site,” and according to my sources, it is too good to be true: the iPad 2 does not have a retina display.”

The iPad 2 may, in fact, have an increased display resolution (from, say 1024 by 768 to, say, 1536 by 1152), but it won’t be a Retina Display, according to those aforementioned sources. The site also claims that anything but complete doubling, while not impossible, is also unlikely “for reasons pertaining to UI scaling math (the same reason that the iPhone display resolution didn’t increase incrementally)–but it’s worth noting that my sources only claim ‘no retina display,’ not that the resolution is unchanged. The ‘double or nothing’ line is my opinion, not information from any source.”

Playboy Coming to iPad, But Not Via App

hug_hefner.jpg

Hugh Hefner wasn’t lying to his loyal Twitter followers earlier today when he stated, “Big news! Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March.” But the facts aren’t quite what many had suspected (or, perhaps, hoped).

Apple hasn’t dropped its staunch anti-adult content policy in the wake of Steve Jobs’s absence. Nope, Hefner and co. will be circumventing the company’s strict App Store policing the way so many adult content providers have before–via the Internet.

Playboy is teaming up with Web designer Bondi to create an iPad-friendly content site. As a Playboy rep said in an interview, “We are releasing a web-based subscription service with Bondi Digital Publishing that will give users access to every issue of Playboy both past and present. The service will be iPad-compatible and will utilize iPad functions.”

The publisher will also be offering an iPad app in the coming months, but this one will feature a lot less nakedness, for those who are actually, you know, in it for the articles.

Playboy Hits the iPad–Is Apple Softening Stance on Adult Content?

hug_hefner.jpg

Is Apple loosening its strong anti-adult content stance? Playboy founder Hugh Hefner announced via Twitter today that his magazine’s content–all of it–will be hitting Apple’s popular tablet.

“Big news!” the robe-clad magazine magnate tweeted. “Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March.” The content, Hefner confirmed in a follow up response, will be “uncensored,” including the “whole magazine from the first issue to the latest.”

Apple–particularly CEO Steve Jobs–has barred all adult content from its App Store. Last April, Jobs famously told the press, “You know, there’s a porn store for Android. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That’s a place we don’t want to go–so we’re not going to go there.”

No word on Apple’s end whether the company will be “going there” with Playboy.

Woz “Frightened” By Jobs Leave

steve-jobs-Steve-wozniak.jpg

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak responded to Steve Jobs’s sudden leave from Apple this week in an e-mail, stating, “The news actually frightened me because I did not expect it.”

Jobs over the long weekend issued a release stating that he would be going on leave for an unspecified medical reason, fueling speculation in the media that his pancreatic cancer had returned. The day-to-day running of the company has fallen on Apple COO Tim Cook, who has filled in for Jobs during past medical leaves–and is largely expected to become the company’s next CEO.

Woz said that he had yet to actually reach out to his Apple co-founder, but added that he supports Jobs’s decision. “If Steve is tired and wants a bit more normal life,” Woz said, “more power to him.”

Wozniak and Jobs co-founded Apple Computers with Ronald Wayne in 1976. Wozniak exited the company in 1987, but is still an Apple shareholder–and proud user of Apple products.

Apple Reports Record Numbers, Steve Jobs Still Sick

Apple today posted its financial results for the first quarter of 2011, and the company has plenty to celebrate, pulling in $26.74 billion dollars–that’s up from $15.68 billion the same time last year.

Apple moved 7.33 million iPads, 16.24 million iPhones (up 86 percent over last year), and 4.13 million Macs (up 23 percent over last year). iPod sales decreased, meanwhile, with 19.45 million (down seven percent), continuing no doubt to be cannibalized by iPhone sales.

The company’s CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, was, not surprisingly, optimistic about the whole thing,

We couldn’t be happier with the performance of our business, generating $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter. Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $22 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.90.

A release issued by the company also contained a quote from CEO Steve Jobs,

We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales. We are firing on all cylinders and we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can’t wait to get their hands on.

The presence–or rather lack–of Jobs cast a shadow on the positive results. News came out this weekend that the CEO would be taking yet another medical leave of absence from the company, a fact that has fueled speculation that the executive’s cancer may have returned.
