iPad Sold Out in European Locations, iPad 2 Coming Soon?

ipad 2 ces.JPG

The first generation iPad is out of stock in retail locations all over Europe. Over at the Carphone Warehouse in the UK, the 64GB WiFi model and all 3G models are sold out. Ingram Micro is similarly sold out of a number of models. Carriers Orange and T-Mobile, meanwhile, have slashed prices on the iPad 3G.
Apple’s refusal to restock supplies could well reflect what we’ve known all along–the iPad 2 is coming soon. We’ve seen a similar scenario play out before the launch of past Apple product refreshes.

Steve Jobs At Dinner With Obama – Photo

jobs obama.jpg

There it is–there’s Apple’s CEO seated next to leader of the free world (as well as a who’s who of top tech execs, including Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt, Larry Ellison, Dick Costolo, and Carol Bartz). But it’s Jobs we all wanted to see, of course.
The Apple head has been on sick leave since last month (though Apple insists that he’s still running things from home). Early this week, some disturbing images of a sickly-looking Jobs led The Enquirer to declare that the executive only has six weeks to live.
Jobs does, admittedly, look pretty thin here–and he appears to be the only one who doesn’t have his arm raised aloft for the photo, which appears to be in mid-toast (his elbow seems to be on the table). But we’d don’t want to read too much into it. Skinny Steve Jobs is hardly new, after all.

No iPhone Nano Coming – Report

iPodnano201.jpg

The New York Times has weighed in on the steadily increasing rumors regarding the next version of the iPhone. The iPhone nano that we’ve been hearing so much about? That’s not happening, apparently.

According to the paper, a cheaper version of the handset is coming–but not a smaller version. That revelation comes from the usual group of anonymous sources who were “briefed on Apple’s plans.”

The next version of the phone will be the same size as previous versions–a smaller versions of the phone “would not necessarily be much cheaper to manufacture and because it would be more difficult to operate,” sayeth The Times.

A smaller iPhone would also make using apps a pain, leading, perhaps to a sense of fragmentation amongst developers. Something that Apple has cautioned companies against, in the wake of Android’s success.

Drug Dealers Love iPhones

white-iphone-4.jpg

Now, granted, my knowledge of the modern drug trade is entirely based on the TV shows Breaking Bad and The Wire, but I was under the impression that drug dealers were partial to “burners”–pre-paid cell phones that you can toss away every week or so. Turns out that the iPhone is actually a popular choice amongst members of the drug trade.

This revelation comes from a recent interview with an anonymous Apple Store employee. “We get a lot of drug dealers who try to buy iPhones with fake IDs,” the employee told Popular Mechanics. “You can tell them instantly just by how shady they act, and they know you know, but you obviously can’t start accusing them of being drug dealers–they are customers, after all.”
It gets better, “But when they try to check out, they’ll use what are obviously fake IDs or fake credit cards, and it often turns out they’re using a dead person’s Social Security number or something. And when you call them out on that–then, they run.”

New York City Intros Android, iPhone Condom App

nyc condom app.jpg

According to a recent study, your smartphone doesn’t make you quite as sexy as you might think. That said, if you are managing to get some, in spite of the overwhelming odds, as Steve Jobs would tell you, you’ll really get a better reception if you get a rubber bumper.

The New York City Health Department is celebrating Valentine’s week with the release of its New York City Condom Finder, a free app that will locate the five spots nearest to your location that offer up free jimmy hats (within the five boroughs).

Says NYC’s assistant health commissioner, Dr. Minoca Sweeney, “We want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex. A lot of people come here for that, so we want them to practice safer sex.”

The app is available now for the iPhone and Android.

Steve Job in Hospital – Report

steve-jobs-cancer-national-enquirer.jpg

The latest report on the health of Apple head Steve Jobs comes from no less reputable a source than that bastion of journalistic integrity, The National Enquire. Yep, the CEO, who has been largely absent from the company after taking sick leave back in January, is right there on the cover, next to a story about an Elizabeth Taylor’s “Secret Heart Operation” and a think piece entitled “Hollywood Out of Control.”

The tabloid published some admittedly brutal shots of Jobs, who reportedly weighs around 130 pounds. Oh, also the testimonial of a doctor “with 40 years experience,”

He is terminal. What you are seeing is extreme muscle wasting from calorie deprivation, most likely caused by cancer. He has no muscle left in his buttocks, which is the last place to go. He definitely appears to be in the terminal stages of his life from these photos. I would be surprised if he weighed more than 130 lbs.

The Enquirer, in its infinite wisdom, apparently gives Jobs six weeks to live. Jobs, of course, has been plagued by health issues in recent years, having undergone surgery for a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2008 and receiving a liver transplant the following year.

Is this The End for the Microsoft Zune?

Zune HD

Over at the Win Super Site, Paul Thurott notes that the Microsoft Zune as we know it may be on its last legs. Not the product – but the brand. In a post discussing the fallout of Nokia and Microsoft’s partnership and commitment to Windows Phone 7, he dared to ask, “What of the Zune?” Here’s what he uncovered:
And what about Zune? Although both companies talked up virtually all Windows Phone-based services, Zune was conspicuously missing–both in discussions from both Elop and Ballmer and on a global reach marketing slide that was created by both companies. My sources tell me that the Zune brand is on the way out and that all Zune products and services will be moved into other businesses, including Windows Live. Zune will essentially cease to exist under this plan.
The Zune player will likely continue to exist: it’s a solid media player and a great alternative for someone who doesn’t want to pick up an iPod or iPod Touch at a competitive price. The Zune HD, for example, earned 4.5/5 stars at PC Mag, features a bright and beautiful OLED display, and syncs with your music store and your music library wirelessly: something the iPod and iTunes can’t do.
Still, the Zune never managed to gain ground against the iPod, and the promise of the Zune HD as a real competitor to the iPod Touch never materialized because the app catalog for the Zune HD simply never got off the ground.
Whether this means that new Zune and Zune HD digital media players will suddenly be renamed to something else, or that the Zune Marketplace will fold into the Windows Phone Marketplace, or that some new branding will appear to unify all of Microsoft’s mobile devices remains to be seen.
Even so, and assuming Thurott’s sources are correct, wiping away the Zune as a brand would be a pretty big feat for Microsoft considering how entrenched it is in XBox Live, in WIndows Phone 7, and as a name in the digital music space. It’s unlikely to be as dramatic as it seems, but it will be interesting to see what happens.

iPad Overheating Suit Tossed

apple ipad.jpg

A judge this week dismissed a lawsuit regarding iPad overheating concerns. Jacob Balthazar, Claudia Keller, and John Browning filed the suit last year, claiming that the iPad’s tendency to overheat and shut down in direct sunlight undermined the company’s claims that “reading on iPad is just like reading a book.”

The suit was tossed due to a lack of evidence on the part of the plaintiffs. U.S. District Court Judge Jeremy Fogel wrote in his ruling,
The Court concludes that these allegations are insufficient. At the least, Plaintiffs must identify the particular commercial or advertisement upon which they relied and must describe with the requisite specificity the content of that particular commercial or advertisement.
The plaintiffs now have three days to file an amendment to their original claims.

Verizon iPhone Sales Lacking – Report

Thumbnail image for iphone 4 flat.jpg

After years of waiting and countless studies outlining just how doomed AT&T would be if the news of a Verizon iPhone ever arrived, it turns out that maybe people weren’t all that excited, after all. According to some apparently leaked numbers, customers are buying Verizon iPhones by the boatload, as so many expected.

Boy Genius Report offered up some less than impressive numbers from the Verizon iPhone’s first five days of availability. The numbers, which were culled from five “very prominent” Apple stores, showed that the Verizon version outsold its AT&T counterpart, but not really by all that much. The biggest disparity came, naturally, on the first day, when 909 Verizon iPhones were sold to AT&T’s 539. The gap shrinks pretty quickly from there.
On day two, it’s Verizon 916, AT&T 680. Day three is 660 to 471, day four is 796 to 701, and day five is 711 to 618. Pre-orders, meanwhile, were apparently around 550,000. Those aren’t quite standing in line at the Apple Store for five days numbers.
Could it be that people are already fixated on the iPhone 5?

Man Claims Walmart Sold Him a Fake iPad

LiePad

Ken Lamal walked in to his local Walmart and picked up an iPad he wanted to buy, paid for it, and when he unboxed it, inside he found not an iPad, but a display model – plastic that’s been painted to resemble an iPad for display purposes. When he returned to the Walmart to report the fact that he essentially got a display iPad in a box, Walmart told him they couldn’t refund his money, he should contact Apple, and that all returns are processed through them.
The store says that all returns are processed by Apple and they’re not allowed to repack electronics, so the iPad must have shipped from Apple the way Lamal got it, and that the whole thing is Apple’s problem – not so indirectly implying that Lamal is the one who put the display iPad in the box and is now trying to get cash from the store for it.
Lamal, for his part, bought himself a real iPad at his local Apple Store instead, and the rest is history. He plans to file suit, if only to finally get his money back.
