iPhone 5 is Born

After much speculation, many rumors and even ‘leaked photos’ the next generation iPhone was revealed by Apple SVP of Global Marketing Phil Schiller today. Many anticipated features did make it into the unit and Apple – as usual – surprised the public with other perks. Widely anticipated to be the single largest product launch in history industry experts anticipate 5M to 5.5M units to be initially sold with 8M or more expected in Q4. Let’s look at why.

After two generations of no form factor change, Apple went big on change. The iPhone 5 is the Worlds thinnest smart phone and 20% lighter (than the 4S) at 112g. The 5 features a 4” screen, versus the 3.5” of previous generations. Screensize always presented a competitive challenge, but the increase should diminish that criticism. And they will be using Sharp’s IGZO display technology – thinner screens due to smaller transistors which means more light can pass through and fewer LEDs are required. Translation: takes up less space and uses less power. The screen itself uses in-cell display technology. Previous versions required 2 discreet layers for the touch sensor technology. In-cell enables the touch sensor to be included in the LCD display turning 2 layers into 1 and making the phone .5mm thinner.

The change in screensize and thickness means the unit has a sleeker look to it, differing significantly from its predecessors. And the increased screen size plus higher resolution (1136×640) LCD means enhanced detail for all.

The guts of the unit hold some changes as well. The A6 chip will speed up the unit with a 2X faster CPU and 2x faster graphics.Means Faster app launching, saving images, load music app, viewing attachments in keynotes, ~2x performance across board. Demonstration of Real Racing: to produce a feature of time-shifted multiplayer. Can challenge someone one day and race them the next day.

The camera is now 8mp sensor, 3264×2448 backside illuminated, dynamic low light mode, sapphire lense cover – protection and clearer images. Now 40% faster on photo capture. Panorama: showed 28mp panorama taken on the camera (this can be done on the fly without using third party apps like Photosynth). Software compensates for moving artifacts if youre moving. Images can be shared directly onto Facebook or using iCloud where you can share with friends when added to stream you create (they receive a push notification when new photos are added).

Network speeds have also been increased. Technologies now include GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, and added HSPA+, DC-HSDPA, and LTE. Wi-Fi has also been improved to support 802.11 a/b/g/n, 802.11n is 2.4GHz and dual channel 5GHz, up to 150 Mbps.

Wideband audio. In typical cell phone call, the frequency of data in your voice is compressed around the midrange. But doesn’t sounded entirely natural. Wideband audio fills up more of the frequency spectrum to make your voice sound even more natural. Just starting this technology, 20 carriers at launch supporting this. (Deutsche Telekom and Orange mentioned.)

As expected there is a new connector, AKA Lightening. All digital 8-signal design, 8-0 % smaller. Apple are working with partners to help them integrate connector into existing accessories.

Announced in June, iOS6 running on the iPhone 5, contains both Passbook and Apple’s own map application. Passbook serves as Apple’s solution to a ‘wallet’. Select coupons and vendor payment processes will be available to users via their phone. So as you arrive to Target, for example, your phone uses location services to determine where you are and if you hold any gift cards or coupons. Then you receive an on screen notification. Airlines are currently using it for boarding passes too. And select retailers even provide the ability to pay through Passbook. As widely reported Apple opted to not continue with Google maps app. This new launch will give us a glimpse at the Apple Map functionality.

There’s much more: Facebook integration throughout the OS, great enhancements to Phone app like automated SMS or iMessage back when you can’t answer the phone, FaceTime works over cellular data network. Great enhancements for accessibility, including Single App Mode. Only 10 of the more than 200 new features in iOS 6.

Prices (on a 2 year contract ) will be the same as the 4Sm 16GB $199, 32GB $299 and $399 for the 64GB. You will be able to preorder on September 14th and it will be shipped on September 21st.

So, was it worth the wait and massive hype and would you be willing to switch?

Apple’s 2005 iPhone prototype design strikes a blow at Samsung

I know, I know, both Samsung and Apple have been slugging it out for a long time now in legal circles, no thanks to their never ending injunctions against one another to ban the sales of their rival’s products, and we have seen victories and losses happen to both parties, although it does seem that at this point in time, it is the Cupertino-basec company who has the upper hand. The latest development involves Apple countering Samsung’s allegations that the iPhone that you know and love was actually a borrowed design from Sony.

Just how did Apple respond to such allegations? Well, they decided to show off an iPhone prototype which actually dated all the way back to 2005, where it also proved that 7 odd years ago, the iPhone already shared its fair share of design elements with the iPhone 4 that rolled out to the masses just a couple of years back. Referred within Apple’s inner circles as “Purple,” the prototype which was created in August 2005 was shown off in new court documents for the ongoing Apple-Samsung lawsuit.

What you see above is an image from the bunch of released images, courtesy of The Verge. This particular filing pointed towards a white iPhone that shows off a touchscreen display that takes up most of the front, complete with a home button that is located right under the display which reads “Menu.” This 2005 prototype also comes with flat sides and curved corners, which are not too different from that of the iPhone 4. As for the device’s back, it would feature some space for the camera lens that is located right at the upper right corner.

What do you think of Apple’s move to reveal the “Purple” design so that the court will be convinced that this is totally different from what Samsung alleges, that Apple’s iPhone design was inspired by the good people over at Sony? Not only that, Apple did previously show off another prototype iPhone from 2006, where it has been slapped with the nickname “Jony”, which can be presumed to be in honor of Apple’s lead designer Jony Ive, albeit following the similar font and style as the “Sony” logo.

Hopefully all these legal tussles will be able to be resolved soon, without resulting in the stifling of innovation, of course.

Highly confidential iPad and iPhone prototypes spotted in court documents

We all know just how Apple has been at the forefront of design in their products all these years, and here we are with what was dug up by The Verge – highly confidential prototypes of the iPad and the iPhone. Bear in mind that these are extremely early iPad and iPhone design prototypes, so they are very far from what you see today. The iPhone that you first saw all the way back in 2007 had smooth, curved angles, but those that were in the prototype stage sported an octagonal design – with sharp edges.

The prototypes were discovered in unredacted court exhibits which were filed on Thursday, and it did allow the general masses to be able to check out a rather rare look at Apple’s extremely secretive design process prior to arriving at the doorsteps of consumers, according to The Verge. The reason these prototypes were revealed was not because Apple volunteered to do so, but rather, they were forced to divulge the information after a July 30 jury trial against Samsung.

Is iPad “cooler” than Galaxy?

Apple’s quest to be the coolest gadget received a boost…of sorts…yesterday. Apple had previously filed suit in London High Court claiming Samsung’s Galaxy tablet infringed on their intellectual property. But yesterday a judge ruled that the Galaxy did not infringe. His conclusion about the Galaxy? “They are not as cool,”and Galaxy tablets “do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design,” stated Judge Colin Birss in his ruling.

So do you agree with the judge? Is the Apple iPad truly “cooler” than the Samsung Galaxy? Vote and post your comments as to why you prefer the iPad or Galaxy.

Mini iPad? Isn’t that just a Maxi iPod?

If it were not for Apple products I’m not sure the technology rumor mill would be quite as much fun as it is now. There is always some hush-hush secret project going on, with an undisclosed release date, that wouldn’t bother me so much if I hadn’t just purchased the latest gizmo only to find out that there was something neater, cooler, smaller, faster or, with better battery life just around the corner. So let me tell you what might be, in case it saves you from some future disappointment.

Have you heard about the Apple iPad Mini? I hadn’t, so I did a little research, and this is what I came up with… The iPad Mini is most likely a reality and already set to go into production, it will have a smaller-than-8-inch screen, ditching  the retina display in favor of oxide TFT technology, have a differently positioned camera, and will be offered at a lower price point than the regular iPad we all know, and love. (or despise in favor of Android devices, but that’s a whole other post)

It seems like all the excitement will start this fall, maybe as early as September, when Apple may begin rolling out not only the brand new, diminutive iPad, but the new iPhone (4G/LTE?) as well. I wish I had more details to give you. Oh wait! Sources are also leaning towards a $250 to $300 price point. Come on guys, what do you know? and will you be standing in line for the baby iPad?
