Apple Opens 10th Retail Store In Mainland China Tomorrow

Apple Opens 10th Retail Store In Mainland China Tomorrow

China is a very lucrative market and Apple has been working hard to get a bigger piece of the pie. It faces tough competition there, not only from its main rival Samsung, but also from local vendors who make some of the most popular and best selling smartphones in the country. Despite that, China accounted for over 15 percent of Apple’s sales last year. The company has a good momentum going there, and it seeks to further expand its presence in the country by opening its 10th retail store in mainland China tomorrow.

The new brick-and-mortar store opens a few days after Apple formally launched its storefront on Tmall, the world’s second largest e-commerce website that’s owned by Chinese e-commerce juggernaut Alibaba. It has also finally clinched the much rumored iPhone deal with China Mobile, its new iPhones launch on the world’s largest mobile carrier on January 17th. Including the new store, Apple has 13 retail stores in the country, three of which are present in Hong Kong alone. Apple seeks to open as many as 22 stores in Greater China, it may take a few years before that happens though. It has taken Apple five years to open 13 stores, the first was opened back in 2008 in Beijing’s Sanlitun district. The new Apple store is located at China Central Mall in Beijing’s Chaoyang district, doors open tomorrow.

Thieves Rob Apple Store In Berlin, Crash Car Into Front Door

Thieves Rob Apple Store In Berlin, Crash Car Into Front Door

It wouldn’t surprise anyone to hear that thieves prefer Apple devices. The company makes some of the most sought after devices in the world, and people are definitely willing to pay money. A number of Apple retail stores have been robbed in the past as well, the latest heist has taken place in Berlin, Germany. Thieves smashed a car into the store’s front door, grabbed whatever they could and sped away in different cars. The car used to break into the store was stolen. The Apple store in Berlin is at Kurfürstendamm and is the company’s only brick and mortar outlet in the city. It was opened in May 2013 after construction took nearly two years and is housed inside a 100 year old renovated theatre, it happens to be the 12th Apple store in all of Germany.

While authorities have declined to say exactly how much the stolen merchandise was worth, it probably wouldn’t have been monumental given the fact that the store’s inventory had been locked away for the night. Some 20 Apple devices, used for demonstration purposes in the store, weren’t locked and the thieves were only able to get their hands on them. This isn’t the first time that thieves have decided to smash into an Apple store, last September a store in Temecula, California had its front windows smashed. [Image via Bild.de]

Tim Cook Decides Against Opening Apple Retail Stores On Thanksgiving

Tim Cook Decides Against Opening Apple Retail Stores On Thanksgiving

We picked up on a rumor about a week ago that Apple might open several of its retail stores on Thanksgiving. Apparently the company’s retail marketing directors were pushing for this decision to capture the Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping fever, joining retailers like Macy’s, Sears, Kmart, WalMart and a few others who will be opening up stores on the holiday. Apple was reportedly going to open several stores in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego and more. This would mean that employees would have to be away from home and their families on Thanksgiving, and other retailers have already been criticized for this very reason. Apple wouldn’t have to worry about criticism though, given that CEO Tim Cook has axed all plans to open several stores on Thanksgiving.

Cook reportedly made this decision on the premise that it is important to let retail employees be with their families on Thanksgiving, a premise that an overwhelming majority will agree with. Apple retail store employees who would have been on shifts during the holiday were reportedly going to receive alternate time off, but Cook didn’t go with that plan. By going down this road, Apple joins a list of retailers like Nordstrom and Costco who have all chosen to remain closed through Thanksgiving.

First Apple Retail Store In Brazil To Open Early Next Year

First Apple Retail Store In Brazil To Open Early Next Year

Almost an year ago Apple confirmed that it would open an official retail store in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Though it didn’t exactly say when the store will be opened. Almost a year down the road there’s no official word about the progress of Brazil’s first ever Apple Retail Store. A new report suggests that the store might be opened up early next year, just in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Barring delays related to staffing and construction, the report suggests that the store may be opened between February and March 2014. Apparently retail expansion into South America is “high priority” for Apple, so much so that it is seeking retail employees in the U.S. willing to relocate to Rio de Janeiro for a few months to teach local retail employees. They’ll also be on hand to assist customers as locals go through the learning curve. Another source claims that the store was originally supposed to open in July 2013, but due to staffing issues, the launch couldn’t take place. March 2014 is believed to be the correct timeframe, just a few months before 2014 FIFA World Cup. A new Apple Retail Store opening up shortly before one of the largest sporting events in the world, which attracts hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts from around the world, doesn’t get any better than this, does it?

Apple Reportedly Expanding iPhone Trade-In Program Beyond The U.S.

Apple Reportedly Expanding iPhone Trade In Program Beyond The U.S.

It was rumored back in August that Apple was going to launch an iPhone trade-in program of its own. Third party retailers had offered such programs for quite some time, this was believed to be Tim Cook’s move to increase iPhone sales being made at the company’s own retail stores. Apple launched the program that month, allowing customers with older models to trade-in their smartphones. Up till now the program has been exclusive to stores in the U.S., though a new report suggests that the program might soon be expanded into the UK and Europe.

Apparently Apple has started preparing training materials for retail store staff in the UK to get them up to speed with the iPhone trade-in program. Training has reportedly begun in a small number of outlets, complete roll out is expected over the next couple of months. The entire procedure is quite simple, customers take in their old iPhone and are offered a value based on the condition of the device. Retail store employees will look at a number of factors such as water damage, screen quality and hardware damage. Once the customer accepts the value for their old iPhone, they’ll be given a gift card of the same value which must be put toward the purchase of a new iPhone. Customers can’t use the gift card for anything else being offered for sale in the store, they have to purchase a new iPhone. No word as yet exactly when Apple intends on launching the program beyond U.S. borders. The UK is a logical place to expand into next, given the fact that after the U.S., it has the highest number of Apple Retail Stores.

Apple Stonestown Galleria Store Is Going To Triple In Size

Apple Stonestown Galleria Store Is Going To Triple In Size

Apple will be expanding its smallest store in San Francisco this year, so much so that it is going to triple in size. The store is located at the Stonestown Galleria which is near the San Francisco State University. Right now it is a modest 3,160 square feet, out of which only 1,500 square feet is public retail space, however the new location in the mall where the store is being shifted to comes in at a staggering 10,641 square feet. There were three different retailers at this space, now all of it will be a shiny Apple Retail Store with an unusual curved glass storefront.

The shift brings the Stonestown Galleria store at par with San Francisco’s two other Apple Stores on Chestnut Street and Union Square, which have about 9,500 and 15,000 square feet of space. The new space is expected to welcome customers around the holidays, what’s better than opening a new retail store at the holiday shopping boom time. The curved glass store front will be reminiscent of the one’s that Apple has already built in other locations. Construction moves forward behind black plywood that’s shielding the works from mall goers.
