The Apple TV Is Your Dumb-TV→Smart-TV Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

The tree outside my window just changed from its green summer livery to a more seasonal burnt orange. Many people feel cheated by the changing of the seasons, but look at the bright side: it’s indoors time! Every self-respecting geek loves the winter, where you can stay inside and watch movies, play games, and vegetate until the earth’s revolution brings the warmth around again. But this also means you should be getting your hibernation cave in order. More »

Bang & Olufsen gets connected with BeoVision 11 Smart TV

There’s a new Bang & Olufsen set in town. The BeoVision 11 Smart TV gives viewers access to the Web courtesy of a browser that can be navigated via remote, iPad or Android tablet. You can also check out apps like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube on the set. There’s DLNA enabled for media streaming, two USB ports, Ethernet, six HDMI sockets, six speakers and a cabinet in the back for storing your Apple TV. Aesthetically, the TV doesn’t look all too different from the BeoVision 10, though the company is calling this its “most ambitious television to date.” The 11 comes in 40-, 46- and 55-inch varieties and a slew of color options. You can pick one up (use your back) at B&O stores beginning today, priced at £4,995 (around $8,000). Stay tuned after the break for a press release and a video in which B&O’s CEO humbly calls it the best TV his company has ever made.

Apple TV updated to iOS 5.1, brings more AirPlay features and shared photo streams

If you’re a 2nd- or 3rd-gen owner of an Apple TV, you should be receiving an update for iOS 5.1. Apple rolled out a slew of new features for its media-streaming device, the most important of which include shared photo streams, iTunes account switching, and some added AirPlay functionality.

The shared photo streams feature allows you to view the photo streams that you create on your iOS devices on your Apple TV. You can update your photo collections and even invite friends and family to view your photos and comment on them. Also, public photo streams can be viewed through Apple’s iCloud site and now Apple TV devices.

Some of the new AirPlay features are impressive as well. You now have the ability to send audio from your Apple TV out to devices that support AirPlay, such as compatible speakers, AirPort Express devices, and other Apple TVs. You can now also password-protect AirPlay access with an on-screen code, so that no one else on your WiFi network has access to your content.

Another great feature they’ve added is iTunes account switching, which lets each member in your family have their own music or movies libraries on the Apple TV. The update brings the ability to swap between accounts quickly right on the Apple TV. Of course, you could just have one big library that combines all of your family’s content, but we know how stingy some family members can be.

The iOS 5.1 update also includes subtitle support, movie trailers, more advanced networking options, and general performance improvements and bugfixes. If you don’t yet have the update, you can grab it now by going to Settings > General > Update Software on your Apple TV.

Apple TV 5.1 Brings Custom Network Configurations, Could Allow For VPN Use

hero_appletv_2ndgen

Apple today released its iOS 5.1 update, which brought a number of new features to the table, including the ability to set up custom network configurations using Apple Configurator, the device management tool Apple offers through the Mac App Store for management of multiple iOS devices across an organization or household.

Apple doesn’t go into detail about what exactly you can do with the new network configuration options, saying simply that it allows users to install configuration profiles “to configure Wi-Fi and Ethernet corporate networks,” but it’s very possible that this could also open the door for users to employ virtual private network settings on an Apple TV, meaning that they could potentially get access to U.S. region-locked streaming services like Hulu Plus beyond American shores.

Of course, that’s bad, don’t do that. But if you were so inclined, you could give it a try and let us know what you think. I’m hearing that getting Configurator to properly prepare Apple TV units for device management isn’t working just yet, but this could be because an update from Apple for that piece of software is still required and will be fixed soon. After all, there is already a brand new Knowledge Base article on Apple’s website about the procedure for updating Apple TV network settings from within Configurator..

If you’re looking for other additions, the Apple TV update boasts quite a few, including support for the new Shared Photo Streams introduced in iOS 6 and AirPlay for audio from Apple TV to other sources, whereas before now it’s always been only the other way around.

Full details about what’s included below, as per Apple’s official update notes:

Long-awaited Apple TV update changes the home screen, suggests apps are coming soon

Apple’s most notable hobby got a very quiet update today, bringing features that were previously requested and, frankly, overdue. Among the updates is the ability to (finally) rearrange apps on the homescreen and the ability to switch between two Apple accounts on one Apple TV. The release notes are below:

iOS 5.1 for Apple TV Enhances AirPlay Capabilities and Suggests Apps Might Arrive Soon [Apple]

The Apple TV software has been updated in a very quiet manner, but the new functionality contained in that update—AirPlay broadcasting, support multiple iTunes account, shared photo streams—is more substantial than it first seems. And the fact that you can now rearrange icons on the home screen suggest that proper support for iOS apps could finally be on the way. More »

Apple TV update 5.1 brings shared photo streams and iTunes account swapping, available now

Apple TVs of the second and third-gen variety are getting update 5.1 today, which brings two long-awaited features. Both shared photo streaming and iTunes account switching are now part of Apple’s set-top box — the combination of those two finally freeing parents from the potential nightmare of discovering their child’s “not safe for parents” photo streams, of course. The update, spotted by MacRumors, also adds some new AirPlay functionality, enabling users to “send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs).” Beyond those two biggies, however, the rest of the update is rather nuts and bolts oriented — head below for the full list.

Time Warner Paves the Way for Lamest Version of Apple TV’s Future [Apple TV]

If Apple TV is anything like the a la carte channels as apps dream we’ve hoped for, it could be amazing. But according to comments from Time Warner Cable president and COO Rob Marcus we might never be liberated from our cable providers. More »

No iTV or new Apple TV in 2012?

It is well known that Apple does not comment on rumors, but it was reported that an Apple executive allegedly denied an iTV rollout in the near future sometime last month. Well, you know how important it is to back up a story with facts, so here we are with whispers of a new report that also suggested the same thing. Bloomberg claimed that “a person familiar with [Apple’s] plans” shared on how negotiations with media companies and cable providers seem to run into stumbling blocks, where among them include “a tussle for control over the software that determines the screen interface.”

To put it in a nutshell, Apple does not see eye to eye with media providers concerning on how the actual user experience is like, which does seem to offer some spine to our August story concerning the denial of any iTV or Apple TV rollout for this year at least. Knowing Apple, they would most probably be loathe to lease their set-top box via cable providers, and will instead prefer to sell it directly to users. Patience will reveal the clouded future for sure.
