Well isn’t that a breath of fresh air. With no apologies given to its long-standing hobby, Apple CEO Steve Jobs provided a pretty honest and thorough assessment of what’s wrong with the TV set-top box market. “No one wants to buy a box — ask TiVo, ask Roku, ask usask Google in a few months” (in the spirit of competition, of course). In Jobs’ opinion, “the only way that’s going to change is if you tear up the [box], give it a new UI, and get it in front of consumers in a way they’re going to want it.” Frankly, we’re pretty happy how quickly and succinctly he was able to respond in a Q &A session, seems like he’s been mulling it over — and given what we heard about Apple TV’s future plans, we’re not surprised. Rumor: New $100 Apple TV Takes Aim at the Cloud

For its next Apple TV, Apple may ditch the set-top box form factor and instead cram a media player into a tiny device running the iPhone OS, according to Engadget.

The blog cites an anonymous tipster who claims the next Apple TV has been described as “an iPhone without a screen,” containing only two ports — the power socket and the video-out — and the same internal architecture as an iPhone (A4 CPU). The next Apple TV is also rumored to feature 16GB of Flash storage and support for 1080P HD.

The device will cost only $100, according to the tipster — significantly lower than the current $230 system. Engadget did not provide a time frame of when to expect the device.

Most interestingly, Engadget claims the device will have a strong focus on cloud-based media, meaning most video you view will be streamed from the internet. That’s plausible, given that Apple is building a gigantic data center and the company recently acquired streaming-music service Lala. Some sources have also said that Apple is planning to reboot iTunes into a streaming media center.

In conference calls with investors, Apple has repeatedly referred to its Apple TV as a “hobby,” implying it’s still a niche product that has yet to be a blockbuster hit. If the rumor turns out to be true (and we find it to be very plausible), then this certainly sounds like a compelling revamp of the Apple TV.

Engadget’s rumor follows Google’s announcement of Google TV, a web TV platform based on the Android operating system. Recent moves reveal that Apple and Google are becoming fierce rivals, competing in the mobility space, maps, and advertising. The next battle could be for streaming media.

If you thought that Apple’s foray into the world of home entertainment died with the last iteration of the Apple TV, you’re quite wrong. A tip we’ve received — which has been confirmed by a source very close to Apple — details the outlook for the next version of the Apple TV, and it’s a doozy. According to our sources, this project has been in the works long before Google announced its TV solution, and it ties much more closely into Apple’s mobile offerings. The new architecture of the device will be based directly on the iPhone 4, meaning it will get the same internals, down to that A4 CPU and a limited amount of flash storage — 16GB to be exact — though it will be capable of full 1080p HD (!). The device is said to be quite small with a scarce amount of ports (only the power socket and video out), and has been described to some as “an iPhone without a screen.” Are you ready for the real shocker? According to our sources, the price-point for the device will be $99. One more time — a hundred bucks.

Not only will this be priced to sell (like hotcakes), it seems that Apple is moving away from the model of local storage, and will be focusing the new ATV on cloud-based storage (not unlike Amazon’s streaming scheme, though we’re talking instant-on 1080p, a la Microsoft). For those still interested in keeping their content close, there will be an option to utilize a Time Capsule as an external storage component, but the main course will be all about streaming. The new ATV will do away with its current OS X-lite variation as a operating system, and will instead adopt the iPhone OS for the underlying experience. There’s no word at this point on whether apps and the App Store will be coming along for the ride, but it makes sense given the shared platform. Of course, scaling iPhone apps to that 52-inch plasma in your living room isn’t exactly a no-brainer. Perhaps not surprisingly, Apple won’t deliver the ATV news at the upcoming WWDC — that event will be focused on the capabilities of the new iPhone — but development on the product is most definitely full steam ahead. 7 Ways to Watch Web Video Without Google TV

Tech companies are in a race to redefine the TV experience by combining web video content with traditional programming. The goal: to control your living-room screen by creating an experience where using the remote to view BoingBoing’s latest video on your 52-inch plasma is as easy as playing the last episode of Lost from your Tivo, or clicking over to a live broadcast from Yankee Stadium.

Google announced a new set-top-box platform called Google TV last week. It will be based on Google’s Android operating system and will have access to Flickr, gaming sites such as Club Penguin, and music sites such as Pandora and Rhapsody.

With Google TV, the search company enters a crowded space where big companies such as Apple and Microsoft and scrappy startups such as Boxee and Roku have been trying to make headway for years.

Where Google TV hopes to score is in its ability to integrate cable programming with web video. Most other alternatives only offer access to free TV channels or select cable shows.

The first Google TV products, including a Sony TV running the software and a Logitech set-top box, are expected in the fall.

But you don’t have to wait for that — especially if you don’t care about cable TV.

Here are seven alternatives to Google TV that are already available.

Boxee

Boxee’s media player is probably the cheapest way to get a streaming-media player: It’s free. (Assuming you already have a computer, that is.) Add to that a great interface and access to some high-quality content, and Boxee is a strong competitor to Google TV.

Boxee organizes content into five buckets: movies, TV shows, photos, music and apps. So from the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to Jersey Shore and Joost, neat, square-shaped icons present a lineup that’s easy to navigate on the big screen.

Boxee integrates with Netflix, so it’s easy for Netflix subscribers to use Boxee to play movies instantly. It also takes music and movies from your computer’s hard drive and pours them into this interface so it can be found easily. Just download it to your PC, and hook up the machine to your TV through the HDMI port.

Boxee even has an iPhone app that lets you turn your iPhone into a remote to control the software.

It is available as a software-only download. Soon, you should also be able to buy a dedicated Boxee hardware box with the software preloaded. The Boxee box is made by D-Link and will be Wi-Fi enabled. It will include an ethernet-connectivity option, 2 USB ports, SD card slot, remote and a keyboard. The Boxee box is expected to be priced under $200 and available by fall.

TIRED Stability can still be an issue though crashes are less frequent now, playback of shows can sometimes be choppy, frequent skirmishes with Hulu.

Roku

Roku’s media player is targeted at those who want web content on their TV but don’t want to get their hands dirty with the setup.

The Roku set-top box is the definition of plug-and-play and offers a choice of free and premium channels. Customers largely use the device to stream movies from Netflix and Amazon.

It also offers some free channels include Twit.TV, and TechPodcasts.com, along with access to Flickr.

But in a world where its rivals are innovating fast, Roku can be very limiting. Basic web integration is now a part of most Blu-ray players, and Netflix is available through other options such as rival Boxee for free, or the Xbox 360. Why buy a Roku player for $80?

TiVo

TiVo’s digital video recorders are a must-have for anyone who cannot bear to miss Monday Night Football or a single episode of FlashForward. It’s also the original digital video recorder, giving you the ability to record and watch TV when you want.

While cable companies have marginalized TiVo by integrating DVR capabilities into their cable boxes, the latest version of TiVo has some unique features that make it worth a look.

TiVo has updated its DVRs to lets users access on-demand video from Netflix and Amazon, or watch endless videos from YouTube.

There’s also the ability to stream music and photos from online sites and transfer recorded shows to your iPod, iPhone or PSP.

Of course, all this comes at a price. TiVo Premiere starts at $300 and requires an annual service fee of $130.

TIRED Pricey, no Wi-Fi, no browser.

Yahoo Connected TV

Millions of users access Yahoo services such as news, finance and Flickr through their PCs or phones. Not surprisingly, Yahoo has been working to extend its tentacles into the TV market.

Yahoo Connected TV, introduced last year, uses the concept of “widgets” to put services into boxes that can be sorted and organized by users. Apart from Yahoo’s own services, Yahoo offers widgets from Amazon, Blockbuster and broadcasters such as CBS and Showtime.

Yahoo says it will let developers create widgets to run on Connected TV. Yahoo has partnered with companies such as Samsung, Sony and Vizio to put the Yahoo Connected TV software inside TV sets. So if you have one of these sets, you can take advantage of the Yahoo-enabled features.

So far the company claims about 3 million TVs featuring this software have been sold since it was introduced in March 2009.

But depending on TV makers could be the flaw in Yahoo’s strategy. Sony has already moved into Google’s camp, promising to offer Google TV inside some of its TV models later this year.

Also, there’s no PC option. If consumers can’t download and run Yahoo Connected TV from their PCs, it’ll be difficult to sell them on the idea. After all, how will they know what they’re missing?

Microsoft Windows Media Center

The Windows media player has been around so far and gone through so many iterations that it’s easy to forget that Microsoft was the first major tech company to see the potential of getting into the living room.

Media player offers access to TV shows, music and movie trailers. But Windows Media Center is the company’s real deal for the living room. Media Center lets your PC act as a DVR if you have a tuner card, listen to FM and internet radio stations, watch photos from your disk and even connect with Netflix on the big screen. And you can sync all your content with a Windows phone or a Zune if you use the Media Center.

Microsoft’s counting on its biggest strength to bring Windows Media Center to PC users: the Windows operating system. The program is included in Windows XP Media Center Edition, premium editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

But there’s one big thing missing: the cool factor. And Media Center hasn’t inked partnerships or aggregated TV content to the extent that an Apple TV or a Boxee can offer.

Apple TV

Apple has been seemingly firing on all cylinders for the last few years. Apple TV, introduced in 2007, is a rare flop.

The digital media receiver never reached the ubiquity of an iPod, nor did it become the gold standard for its category like the iPhone.

At $230, Apple TV isn’t cheap. But it lets users watch HD movies and TV shows through deals that Apple has struck with the studios. You have to pay to buy or rent most shows, but you can view YouTube content for free.

Despite its early lead, Apple TV falls far short in what users get for the price. Apple’s closed system means users are locked into iTunes to purchase movies. So if you want to run Netflix or Amazon video, you have to get Boxee on your Apple TV, which we think raises the question: Why not just get Boxee?

Netgear Digital Entertainer

Streaming video players are so hot that even Netgear, otherwise known for its modems and routers, put out a box called Digital Entertainer.

Netgear’s internet-TV-player box makes online video, photos and music accessible through the TV, even for those who don’t have a PC. The player connects to the home network and the internet by ethernet or wireless USB adapater. The box includes upto 500 GB of storage for movies, music and photos.

But the streaming media player at Netgear may be even more of a hobby than at Apple. The company offers two versions of its box, priced at $100 and a whopping $400, and neither has exactly taken the market by storm.

Apple TV Prototype Sells on eBay for 46 Bucks

You’d be naive to think Apple churns out hit products without doing homework first. Before gadgets hit the market, companies invest heavily in research and development, which often results in early prototypes that rarely see the light of day. A good example is a prototype of an Apple television box (above) from 1995, which recently sold on eBay for $46.

The Apple Interactive Television Box (ITV for short) was made 10 years before the release of the Apple TV. It kind of looks like a retro TiVo. The box features chips made by Motorola, Texas Instruments and VLSI Technology.

It was equipped with a bunch of old-school ports that you’ve probably forgotten about today: stereo audio RCA jacks, a Mac serial port, S-Video, RF in, RF out, RJ-45 Ethernet, ADB port, HDI-30 SCSI port and dual SCART connectors. The OS was a subset of the Mac OS with QuickDraw and QuickTime software, according to the Apple Museum.

Apple tested the ITV prototypes only internally in 1993, but in 1994 the company formed a partnership with British Telecom to launch a consumer trial with 2,500 households participating. The project was canceled in late 1995 when it was clear that ITV would not become commercially successful.

Home entertainment has been a tough market to crack. Apple still refers to its Apple TV, which was released in 2005, as a “hobby” due to its moderate success. And it’s obvious why: There are just so many different ways people watch video content, whether it’s through digital cable, On-Demand, iTunes, DVDs and so on.

Another great example of a classic prototype was Bashful, an early Apple tablet made with the help of Frog Design back in 1983.

How to Ditch Cablevision, Get ABC (And The Oscars) For Free

Watching the ABC/Cablevision slap fight on the eve of the Oscars made me want to shout: there is a better way!
About a year ago, I ditched cable TV, and yes, I’m watching the Oscars on ABC on my HDTV tonight. In fact, my picture will probably be better than those poor saps with cable.
I’m getting my ABC over the air – in tech parlance, OTA. In my column from 2008, “How I Slashed My Bills with Tech,” I explain how you can get free, high-quality HDTV without having to deal with Cablevision, Cox, Time Warner or anyone else.
You can set up a basic system in under an hour. If you have a relatively recent TV with a digital tuner, run out to your local electronics store and get a basic RCA ANT1000 antenna for $10. If you have an older TV, you’ll have to grab a $50 digital converter box, too. When you’re ready to make a commitment, get a better antenna – the outdoor kind are great, but I’m happy with a $60 Winegard SS-3000 that sits on a bookshelf.

I get ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CW, minor networks like MyTV, Qubo and ION, and a whole lot of PBS over the air. I also get strange local programming and some excellent music videos on our city-funded municipal channel, and a bunch of Spanish-language channels I don’t understand. For other programming, I can rent or buy it on my TiVo HD or Apple TV (yes, I have both, but you don’t have to), order it from Netflix or call it up on demand from Web sites – though I don’t have my PC hooked directly to my TV, so that last category I have to watch on a PC screen. 
There is one caveat: going OTA doesn’t help anyone who needs live cable sports programming. My wife and I don’t watch any sports – zero – so this isn’t a concern for us, but there are lots of games that aren’t shown anywhere on the Internet or over the air. If sports is your “killer app,” it looks like the pay-TV providers have you by the neck. Have any other solutions, readers?

Boxee Beta, Now On Apple TV

boxee-on-appletvbetaBoxee Beta, the free media-center software that pulls in TV shows, movies photos and music to your computer through a custom, remote-control-on-the-sofa friendly interface, has come to the Apple TV. This software alone justifies buying the little video-box.

The original, private-beta version of Boxee has been available for a long time on the Apple TV as well as OS X, Linux and Windows, but was left behind in January when Boxee went public with its updated, slicker public beta. Now there is an installer for the Apple TV which makes it dead easy to get the software on your box.

Just download the ATVUSB-Creator and run it on your computer. Plug in a bootable USB drive (or stick) and run the program. You’ll be left with a drive that can be plugged into the USB port of the Apple TV and which adds a new “Boxee” option to the main menu. Select this and sit back. Boxee will be installed and, after a reboot, you will now have a proper media computer instead of the crippled, Apple-dependent box you had before. Cancel that cable subscription now!

Boxee Beta arrives on the Apple TV

Finally completing the circle again after the beta launch last month, Boxee has made its latest version available for the Apple TV. Available via an updated Launcher for those already running the Alpha version or ATVUSB-Creator for everyone else it should bring the facelifted UI and features Windows, OS X and Ubuntu users have been enjoying. Getting some 1080p oomph out of your set-top box will be difficult however, with no support for the Broadcom Crystal HD add-on “yet” and while performance has improved h.264 playback may still be limited even in this new version. Mash the read link and follow instructions to get moving, but feel free to bounce any thanks or issues towards the forum posters, XBMC coders and the rest of the posse who made this update possible.

Apples Tim Cook: Apple TV Is Safe, For Now

According to a presentation made to the Goldman Sachs technology conference (and recorded by Business Insider) Apple has no plans to discontinue the Apple TV. Yet.

“…There’s people — and I’m one of those — that they’re avid Apple TV
users, and so, because their gut says something there, we’re continuing
to invest in this,” Cook was quoted as saying. “But today it’s just a hobby.”

Apple has always been a bit indifferent to its little set-top box, even as rivals have begun creeping into the market (Seagate and Western Digital have both launched media extenders), or paved the way, as with TiVo. Still, many look ungainly compared to the Apple TV, with its integrated 802.11n networking and storage. Cook said that December sales of the Apple TV were up 35 percent.

Cook also reportedly said that the company has no plans to enter the TV market, which I wouldn’t think would be a big priority, given the lack of success companies like Gateway and Dell had a few years ago.

Watch Out Roku, Here Comes Popbox

If you’re undecided about what set-top box to attach to your TV–Roku? Apple TV? Boxee Box?–the field is going to become a lot more crowded in 2010. Right out of the gate we’ve got the Popbox by Syabas, which nails the price ($129) and offers a decent range of content (partners include Netflix and ShoutCast).

This open-platform set-top box lets you stream movies, music, and photos from your networked computers and attached storage devices (including portable video cameras). You can also stream a variety of programs and movies off the Internet, which is really the bigger draw.

The box includes 1080p HDMI video out, as well as component video, and it comes with an included infrared remote. The user interface is especially attractive, and makes it simple to browse content from the Internet or local devices. While the box is certainly missing some premium content partners, the company is hoping its open development platform will remedy that. Media companies can create apps that let them sell content to Popbox owners. The device should be available in March.
