iPad going on sale in Verizon Wireless and AT&T stores October 28 (update: Verizon data pricing)

It might not be the Apple-Verizon tie-in you are most anxious to see happen, but the big red network has gone official with its plans to offer the iPad in its brick-and-mortar stores starting on October 28. VZW will be bundling the WiFi-only iPads with its own MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot with pricing set at $630, $730 and $830 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants of Apple’s tablet, respectively. There’s only one access plan on offer for now, granting users 1GB of monthly data allowance in exchange for $20 and no contractual commitments. AT&T will match the release date and upfront prices for each model, although its iPads will be of the WiFi + 3G variety, eschewing the need for a bundled MiFi; plan pricing will continue at 200MB for $15 or 2GB for $25 monthly. Update: According to an FAQ on Verizon’s website, spotted by AppleInsider, there are a pair of other service plans after all: $35 for 3GB and $50 for 5GB, each with penalties of $10 per gigabyte of overage. As the publication notes, these are pretty nifty deals compared to Verizon’s usual data rates, however the FAQ also stipulates that “customers will only be eligible for the new bundle data plans when purchasing the iPad and MiFi 2200 promotional bundle.”

Debunk: Leaked iPad photo doesn’t show next gen design

By now you may have seen some photos of an alleged iPad casing doing the rounds that is purported to be the next generation of Apple’s tablet. In the pics, you can clearly see that there are two distinct slots for the company’s 30 pin dock connector, which would allow you to plant the iPad in either landscape or portrait mode. Unfortunately, this isn’t a sign of things to come — it’s a future that never was. According to a trusted Engadget source, what the image actually shows is a rejected concept from the current generation iPad. The story goes that originally there had been plans to feature two dock connections, but close to the last minute a design decision was made to kill the landscape port.

It’s still possible that Apple has decided to go back to the two-port design, but in all likelihood this is a piece of a prototype which has found its way into the world. If the story we’ve been told is correct, then there would likely be dozens if not hundreds of these back pieces floating around China. From what we can suss out, this is not the direction Apple is going in for the next version, but hey, if come January we see a new iPad with two dock connectors — drinks are on us.

Colorware ships its first original product: the $300 Grip for iPad (hands-on)

Colorware’s been making the products you buy look better (or worse, if you’d like) for years on end, but up until now, it has never actually created a product from scratch. Enter the Grip for iPad, a simplistic new iPad holster that’s less of a case and more of a handle. It’s a metal frame that you bolt around the edges of your tablet, and as you can tell, it adds a major grabbing point to the side. But here’s the rub: it’s $300. Yeah, three Benjamins. We get that it’s manufactured in Minnesota using that high-priced American labor, but seriously? The major problem is just how awkward that $300 price tag looks beside the $499 MSRP of the device it’s supposed to hold; imagine buying a $13,000 set of tires for your $17,000 vehicle. It just doesn’t sit well in the cranium. And then there’s the problem of using it.

You see, as nice as it is to have a handle on your tablet at all times, it makes actually using the iPad in portrait mode practically impossible. You’re constantly trying to figure out how to work around that bulge that’s now there on the left side. Furthermore, it does essentially nothing for protection. The back is still wide open and susceptible to drops / scratches, and the front isn’t recessed in the least. Adding insult to multiple injuries, there’s not enough room to have a case wrapped around your iPad while it’s inside of the Grip. Oh, and did we mention that the slightest bump against a rough surface will rip the paint right off of the device? We’d love to love the Grip — it’s mighty pretty and it’s built like a tank — but it simply makes no sense whatsoever at $300. Even at $100, you’ve got way better options when it comes to actually protecting your iPad.

BMW shows off first ‘official’ iPad integration, convinces us to go aftermarket

Look, BMW — we appreciate that you were the first automaker to provide seamless iPod integration way back when, but seriously, did anyone on the design squad look at this abomination before shipping it off to France? As the story goes, the aforesaid automaker has demonstrated the first “official” iPad-vehicle integration setup at this year’s Paris Auto Show, and to be frank, it’s heinous. The idea here is to provide world-class rear-seat entertainment, while apparently destroying aesthetics in one fell swoop. It’s just about too hideous to be true, but the iconic “BMW” logo on the mounting brackets all but confirms the authenticity. Perhaps you folks should consult with any number of the skilled DIYers out there before shooting for the stars with version 2.0?

Chromium OS infiltrates iPad, makes itself comfortable

What is this madness we see before us? Hexxeh, he who provides your nightly Chromium builds, has dropped a small but perfectly formed bombshell by revealing that he’s managed to install Google’s nascent OS onto Apple’s hotcake of a tablet, the iPad. He’s evidenced this feat by tweeting from the liberated slate, though one of his outgoing missives includes the dire warning that he’ll “dash your hopes later, there are a few catches.” Well, at least that gives us a little time to fantasize about Appoogle synergies before those dream-destroying details are revealed in full.

BlackBerry PlayBook vs. iPad vs. Galaxy Tab vs. Streak: the tale of the tape

What a day — yesterday, that is. Research in Motion finally announced its long-awaited BlackBerry tablet, the 7-inch PlayBook (thankfully not named the BlackPad). While there’s still quite a few missing details, and nary an unit in site for us to try first-hand, we’ve still got a sampling of specs for this little guy to go tête-à-tête on the quantitative field of proverbial battle, at least as it can be seen so far (that early 2011 release date is still a ways off). Looks very promising so far, lined up against Apple’s iPad, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, and the Dell Streak, but our known unknowns — i.e. price, app support, and overall feel of using the QNX-built operating system — are what will really make or break the slate. Apple iPad officially hits Target shelves October 3rd

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. The Apple iPad is pinching and zooming its way onto Target shelves starting October 3rd, in both WiFi / 3G and WiFi-only options. Those with a Target credit card can get a five percent discount when the rollout for that special begins October 17th. Is this what you’ve been waiting for? Probably not, but at least you know what to expect on your next expedition to the red-clad retailer.

VLC Media Player for iPad now available, your video codec worries decidedly lessen

Digg Well, would you look at that? Ever since Apple added some leeway (and snark!) to its App Store submission rules, the approved apps have become increasingly more interesting: Google Voice clients, a Commodore 64 emulator, and now the VLC Media Player with claims to support “nearly all codec there is.” We’ve spent a few minutes with the program already, and while it’s import method is reminiscent of CineXPlayer (i.e. via the Apps tab), the thumbnail-rich interface is much prettier. Official launch date is tomorrow, but we’ve had no problem downloading from the US and UK stores already, so go ahead and give it a whirl. Or if not, our gallery is below.

ABC app eavesdrops on your TV to synchronize interactive content using Nielsen tech (video)

Fine purveyor of TV ratings Nielsen has just found another way to monitor your home — an official ABC app that uses the iPad’s microphone to figure out exactly what you’re watching (whether live or recorded) and offer interactive content on the fly. Pop-Up Video, anyone? Nielsen says the app uses the same audio watermarks embedded in most every US television show to do its thing (and thus doesn’t, say, record your household conversations) so there’s some serious potential for the concept to spread beyond My Generation, the single show it’s been announced for so far. We’ll just kick back and wait for the responsible parties to figure out we’d rather play interactive Jeopardy than figure out the size of that salacious margarita. Because, like, OMG, right? iPad has halved laptop sales, claims Best Buy CEO (update: he meant netbooks)

Well, the iPad is about one half of a laptop — both in its form and functionality — so it makes perfect sense that it’d chop laptop sales by 50 percent. We might be pulling your leg, but Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn isn’t. The dude in charge of the yellow label empire has told the Wall Street Journal that his company’s internal estimates indicate the iPad has eaten up as much as half of laptop PC market demand. In response to this perceived trend toward more portable gadgets, Brian’s outfit is rearranging its inventory to include more e-readers, tablets and smartphones for this holiday season, while slimming down its selection of desktops and HDTVs. Moreover, new demo zones will be set up in-store to allow people to experience the wonders of Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move motion-controlled gaming solutions. So it looks like the future’s coming, whether we like it or not.

Update: It did seem weird to us that the mighty laptop would be that vulnerable to the iPad, and sure enough, our queries with Best Buy were met by the following response:

“The paraphrase that was used in the WSJ wasn’t really an accurate reflection of what Brian said to the reporter.

What Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn said was that we had no firm numbers, but that we speculated there was some replacement of netbooks by iPads going on. We did not provide specifics because we do not presently have the hard numbers on which to base those specifics.”

So, Brian was not only talking about netbooks, but his words were exaggerated too. Phew, and we were just about to start selling our shares in Dell and HP. You can find his full clarification on this issue after the break.
