It’s hardly show-stopping news out of Cupertino today, but gadget fiends hoping to wrap their holiday tech shopping without leaving home now have one more option in their tablet-friendly arsenal. It’s the Apple Store app for iPad, and it’s coming soon to a slate near you. The application, designed specifically to take advantage of the iPad’s added screen real estate, is a big step up from its iPhone equivalent. There’s a bounty of high-res product images with full pinch-to-zoom support, intuitive category links and detailed product info, including explanations for certain device add-ons, like increased storage or wireless connectivity. Curiously, this version lacks the in-store options available with the Apple Store app for iPhone, such as the EasyPay checkout feature that launched way back in 2011. Lusting after Apple’s giant, yet shockingly thin 27-inch iMac? The object of your desire just got a little cheaper — well, as long as you don’t mind refurbished goods. The extra large all-in-one is the latest Apple product to hit the company’s certified refurbished store, offering as much as $270 the product’s regular price. The iMac’s 2.9GHz Core i5 base model can be had for $1,529, replete with 8GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD and that luxuriously large 2560 x 1440 display. Apple is also offering refurbished versions of the 3.2Ghz model for $1,699 and 3.4GHz Core i7 rigs for $1,869 and $2,199, depending on the configuration. As always, Cupertino promises that the machines have gone through a rigorous restoration process, but offers a included one-year warranty to put the concerns of cautious buyers to rest. It’s a rite of passage of sorts — Apple’s “skinny” iMac has now spent enough time on Earth to be deemed an appropriate addition to the company’s refurb ranks. The base late-2012 configuration, which sports a 21.5-inch 1080p IPS screen, a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8 gigs of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and that new super-svelte housing can now be had at a $200 discount, priced at $1,099. As with many Apple refurbished products, you likely won’t be the device’s very first owner, but it will arrive in tip-top condition, with a one-year warranty to boot. Gift cards often get a bad rap as the last resort in holiday shopping, what we supposedly get only when all hope of a carefully considered present has gone out the window. Apple isn’t quite so cyncial, and it may have injected new life into gift giving now that it has switched on buying gift cards through the recently updated Apple Store iOS app as of this weekend. Pick a color and a card value — up to $2,000, if someone’s been good enough to earn a MacBook Pro — and the resulting email lets iOS 6-touting recipients load the card into Passbook. Besides saving some plastic, the Passbook entry adds some worth through geofencing that reminds recipients to splurge if they’re near one of Apple’s steel-and-glass stores. All told, the card may be more than welcome by iPhone fans and save the ignominy of a last-minute rush to the store. Just make sure the recipient doesn’t mind going without a physical gift on the big day — it wouldn’t be right to drain all the romanticism out of a special occasion.

We get it, some of you are feeling a little burned by the iPad update today. It was only about eight months ago that Apple’s slate was last refreshed with the stunning Retina display, now its gotten a subtle, but hardly negligible spec bump. If you’re having a little bit of buyer’s remorse and only made the plunge in the last 30 days, you might be in luck. According to CNET, at least one Apple store (the Stockton Street branch in San Francisco) is offering a free upgrade to a fourth-gen iPad for those that picked up the 9.7-inch tablet in the last month. However, a manager at the 5th Ave shop in NYC told us this isn’t a company-wide policy. Instead its up to individual stores to decide whether or not to offer the extended exchange period, or simply stick with the standard 14-day return policy. We called a few locations and most don’t appear to be willing to make the trade, though the branch in the Mall at Millenia in Orlando, FL is playing ball. We can’t guarantee success, but it can’t hurt to give your local shop a call.
