Belkin announces WeMo Smart, coming to your coffee pot later this year

Sure, Belkin’s WeMo technology handles outlets and such with an iOS companion app, but now the company is looking to leverage the system with household appliances. WeMo Smart will allow companies to leverage Belkin’s apps and existing tech to add new features to their various wares. At CES, a partnership with Jarden Consumer Solutions (JCS) — the outfit behind brands like Mr. Coffee, Sunbeam, Crock-Pot and more — has just been announced that will bring the home automation tech to remotely program an monitor small appliances. From the looks of it, you’ll be able to turn off the coffee pot after you get to the office should you leave your house in a frenzy. The first WeMo outfitted products are set to arrive later in the year.

LG to show off smart home appliances at CES 2013

While LG may be showing off some new mobile devices at CES next week, the company will also be showing off some new home appliances. The company announced today that they’ll be putting several new smart home appliances on display at CES 2013, including a new refrigerator, washing machine, robot vacuum, and oven.

The appliances can interact with users’ smartphones using NFC or remote control over a home WiFi network. By simply touching smartphones to the NFC tag on the smart appliances, users can easily control the refrigerator, washing machine, robotic vacuum cleaner, or the range oven. Users can also give simple voice commands via their smartphones and remotely monitor appliances using LG’s Smart Control.

Now, what exactly could you do with smart home appliances? LG says you could start a load of laundry while you’re on your way home from work, tell your robotic cleaner to vacuum the floor, or bring up a list of food items that are currently in the fridge, as well as bring up a grocery shopping list for items that you need.

The LCD displays on the appliances allow users to access a slew of information. For instance, the oven’s LCD screen can allow you to monitor the status of your oven, search for recipes, set cooking modes, and diagnose problems. Furthermore NFC allows you to quickly set your oven to any particular mode for a specific recipe. Nifty!

Yonanas Review: Stupid Name, Amazing Dessert

Years ago I heard that you could make a delicious and healthy “ice cream” type dessert simply by blending frozen bananas. While the result was indeed tasty, it killed my blender and was really hard to scoop out. More »

Verizon brings wireless monitoring service to Lowe's Iris smart home monitoring

If you’re haunted by dreams of left-on irons and stoves while trying to holiday, Verizon has announced it’ll team up with Lowe’s to help you wirelessly correct any carelessness. The operator is bringing a USB modem to Lowe’s Iris smart home system, letting you monitor and manage your house remotely from a smartphone, sans WiFi or broadband. That’ll let you track family members (or intruders) and control thermostats or appliances via smart plugs. Lowe’s kits start at $180, so if you’d rather hear “are we there yet?” instead of “is the house on fire yet?” on your next trip, tap the PR after the break.
