Airbus Electronic Flight Bag apps save iPad savvy pilots time and paper

Airbus Electronic Flight Bag apps for iPad savvy pilots save time and paper

For a while now, iPads have been used to replace paper in a pilot’s daily duties. Airbus is also looking to further the cause with its Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications for the Apple slate. Pretty soon, airlines will have an alternative to existing EFB tech that runs PC operating systems with the “FlySmart with Airbus” app suite. The apps will allow crews to calculate performance and consult manuals without the need to cart around several hundred printed pages. Of course, to gain access to said software in the App Store, you’ll need to be a customer in order to obtain the requisite download permissions.

Canon expands its PIXMA line with MG2220, MG3220 and MG4220 all-in-ones

Canon expands its PIXMA line with MG2220, MG3220 and MG4220 allinones, adds AirPrint for the latter two

In plenty of time for back to school shopping, Canon has added three new offerings to the PIXMA family. The company just uncovered the MG2220, MG3220 and MG4220 all-in-one printers. The trio boasts 4,800 x 2,400 dpi max resolution, FastFront for easy changing of both ink and paper via the face of the machine, borderless 4 x 6-inch prints in under a minute and handles up to 8.5 x 11 sizes. With the MG2220, you can expect the advertised copy, print and scan functionality, while the other models each sport wireless capabilities. The aforementioned perk includes AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and Canon’s own Easy PhotoPrint mobile app. If that wasn’t enough, two new bits of software will be available with My Image Garden and you’ll gain access to Facebook galleries with Print Your Days.

The pricier pair also touts Auto Duplex printing to keep costs down and the MG4220 tacks on a 2.5-inch LCD for convenient adjustments for its higher price tag. The outfit didn’t offer any details on when these peripherals will hit shelves, but when the time arrives, you can expect prices of $69.99 for the MG2220, $79.99 for the MG3220 and $129.99 for the all-inclusive MG4220. Further details lie in the full PR and a look at all three models can be found in the gallery that follows.

Facebook’s App Center pokes its way into the UK, now available to you and your friends

Facebook's App Center pokes its way into the UK, now available to you and your friends

It’s been nearly a month since we saw Facebook officially introduce us to its newly minted App Center, and now Zuck & Co. are taking the application-loaded service to internet grounds over in the UK. Facebook’s App Center in the Kingdom (or, as UKers call it, App Centre) won’t be much different in comparison to its American counterpart, thus you’ll still be able to grab all those big-name apps like the network’s own Instagram, Draw Something, Spotify and Pinterest — of course, there’s over 600 others to choose from. In addition to these, though, there are some Euro-specific additions to the application mix, including Deezer’s music streaming goods. Eager to find out what all the App Centre fuss is about? Then head over to the source below, where you’ll be able to poke around it yourself.

Apple still trying for water damage indicator patent, drop-prone device owners twitch (update: granted)

Apple still trying for water damage indicator patent, dropprone device owners twitch

Apple has already sought to patent some elaborate water damage detection methods, but it’s also a fan of the classics. That must be why it’s still attempting to patent a water detection method that it’s been seeking since December 2006, just a month before the iPhone went public. The concept is a simple one that you’ll find in many iPhones (and other iOS devices) so far: water-reactive, color-changing tape positioned in a device such that the Genius Bar staffer can see that your device took a dive in the swimming pool without having to tear the phone open. Mercifully, the patent factors in a membrane to prevent an overly humid day from triggering a false positive. There’s still no immediate clue as to whether or not Apple will receive the patent, which strikes us as odd for a technology that’s been used in the field for so long — not that the company has needed the USPTO’s blessing to void the warranty (or offer a rare free replacement) for more than a few waterlogged iPhones over the past five years.

Update: After a little fine-tooth comb inspection, we’ve found that this is the long-awaited granting itself, not just a continuation. Apple will be happy, although others trying to use a similar water detection system will be turning red… for reasons besides getting wet.

iFixit application brings its repair manuals to Android, lets you fix it to your liking

Within the past few weeks alone, we’ve spotted the cautious hands of the folks over at iFixit dive very carefully into that Retina-friendly MacBook Pro, the other MBP and, naturally, Apple’s ultrathin MacBook Air. Luckily for you, if you’re a die-hard fan of all those fancy teardowns and guides, now you’ll have an easier place to browse your way through them in their entirety; thanks to the site’s recently launched Android application. Amazon’s Flow augmented reality app comes to Android, makes shopping more entertaining

Amazon's Flow augmented reality app comes to Android, makes shopping more entertaining

The iOS crowd’s been able to enjoy Flow’s AR features since late last year, but fortunately for those on the Android side who’ve been missing out, this powered-by-Amazon app is now (finally) also available on Google’s OS. It’s simple, using augmented reality and A9’s “continuous scan technology,” the application allows users to buy, as well as get extra information on products such as video games, books, toys, DVDs and CDs through simply using one’s smartphone camera — much like Google Goggles does. Additionally, Flow will keep your scanning history on file, making it easier to find items by date, name, category or scan type. What’s more, Amazon’s Flow won’t cost you a nickel, and it’s up for download now via the company’s own app shop and the Google Play link below.
