Google Play to display tablet-optimized screenshots, once developers do their part

DNP Google now allowing developers to add tabletfriendly screenshots to their app listings

Tired of accidentally downloading apps to your Android tablet that look best on a smartphone? If so, it appears that Google has heard your cries. The company recently updated its developer console to accept app screenshots that are specific to 7-inch and 10-inch tablets. While it’s not the most monumental change, once developers fulfill their end of the bargain, you’ll be treated to UI images that best suit your device. Until then, you’ll still have to endure a few more games of app roulette.

Time Warner Cable Updating TWC TV App To Offer Live TV Anywhere, VOD Content

Earlier this month, Cablevision announced it would be offering live TV anywhere through its Optimum for iPad application, although the channel selection were extremely limited. It looks like another cable provider will soon be offering the ability to stream live TV while away from your home as Time Warner Cable is expected to launch an update to its TWC TV app.

Just like with Cablevision’s offering, the channel lineup for Time Warner Cable’s live streaming of channels outside of your home network will be extremely limited as only the following channels will be able to be watched live: (more…)

Foursquare celebrates 4sqDay with personalized check-in infographic

If you used Foursquare today to check-in at your favorite restaurant or other establishment, then you may know that it’s 4sqDay, a day that’s celebrated each year on April 16 to celebrate social media, specifically Foursquare. The social check-in service has launched a nifty new tool that provides users with a neat personalized infographic of all your check-ins over the past year.

Screen Shot 2013-04-16 at 12.55.45 PM

The infographic comes with four different view modes, with all check-ins being separated by category in different colors. The first one shows check-ins by the time of year (pictured above), the second one shows your check-ins strictly based on category, the third one is based on connections between check-ins (providing a nifty circle with a web in the middle), and the last one is a randomized view that’s merely nothing but something fun to look at.

4sqDay was actually started by an optometrist in Tampa, Florida who also happened to be a social media enthusiast. He was obsessed with numbers, including the connection with Pi Day and it’s celebratory date of March 14 (3.14 is pi, by the way). He cleverly thought that April 16 would be a good day to celebrate Foursquare, since “4 squared” equals 16.

After promoting the idea on the internet, Foursquare picked it up and eventually made it official. Of course, some people celebrate the day with parties, but if you’re not much of a party goer or can’t make it to a party of some kind, you can simply check in at an establishment to earn the 4sqDay badge.

Evernote launches Accelerator program to help out developers

If you’re an app developer that builds app around Evernote’s API and platform, the company wants to help you out. If you’re lucky enough, the company will bring you to their headquarters for a month-long entrepreneurship that will aim to help improve on developers’ apps. Evernote is calling the program Accelerator, which is an extension of the company’s existing developer program.

evernote

The teams that will be selected will come from the 2013 Evernote Devcup, in which winning teams will be flown out to California in an all-expenses-paid trip to work closely with Evernote staff on their products and apps. Some of the cost of the Accelerator program will come from Honda and Japanese telecommunications company Docomo.

At the end of the month-long course, the teams will then present their finished products in front of an audience of investors, journalists, and various leaders and executives, with the possibility that these apps could be picked up by investors or other companies, so there’s definitely a huge benefit in the program.

The Evernote Devcup was announced at SXSW, and app submissions opened up yesterday. Any app that integrates with Evernote’s API is eligible to compete in the Devcup. It’s a four-month long competition that challenges teams to come up with the best apps that work with Evernote, and a select number of teams that win will be sent to participate in the Accelerator program.

Flixster is now on the Xbox 360, UltraViolet library in-hand

Flixster is now on the Xbox 360, UltraViolet library inhand

Warner Bros.-owned social networking slash film service Flixster is now available on the Xbox 360, bringing with it the Rotten Tomatoes rating aggregation service and UltraViolet cloud integration. As Xbox 360 apps tend to be, Flixster costs nothing and only functions if you’ve got an Xbox Live account. Beyond simple controller or media remote input, Flixster’s Xbox 360 app employs Kinect for gesture and voice-based navigation. Special for this platform is the ability to play back those UltraViolet-linked video files in HD; it’s the first Flixster app to do so, although Vudu had that capability already.

With today’s app addition, the grand total of video service apps on the Xbox 360 is hovering just around a hojillion. Seriously, there are kind of a lot of different options, and we’re hoping Microsoft’s got a more cohesive strategy for the next version of the Xbox gaming console. The most recent rumors involve an HDMI-in port, allowing cable boxes to integrate with the console — codenamed “Durango” and / or “Kryptos” — but there’s no mention of a NintendoTVii-esque service to tie disparate video services under a single software umbrella. The 360’s Bing functionality aimed to solve that issue, but sadly never lived up to our expectations.

Google’s MyGlass Companion App for Google Glass Is Now Available in Google Play

Though this is completely useless for pretty much every single one of us (since we don’t have Google Glass), Google just released the companion Android app for Google Glass called MyGlass in Google Play. Even Google so cheekily reminds us that the app does nothing (without Glass, that is) saying: “If you don’t have Glass, then downloading this will be a waste of time. Sorry about that. But if you swipe the screenshots to the right you’ll see there’s a picture of a puppy in pajamas. So not a total waste of time after all.” More »

Bing Apps for Windows 8 get major updates

Late least year, Microsoft rolled out a half dozen Bing Apps for Windows 8 users, each one focused on a specific category, such as travel and sports. The apps were designed to offer “immersive vertical experiences,” and now, about six months later, a big line of updates for them is being pushed out. Users can grab the updates now by heading into the Windows Store and selecting the updates notification.

1

The Bing Apps are comprised of News, Weather, Sports, Finance, Maps, and Travel. All six offer up content relevant to its category, having been created specifically for Windows 8, meaning they’re fast and work well. Each app is getting its own update that brings a variety of improvements and features unique to the app, such as the new ability to customize the News app to follow certain stories and topics you’re interested in. There’s also added support for RSS and reading offline.

New Maps features includes better driving, walking, and transit directions, the ability to save places you frequent as a start screen pin or favorite, and up-to-the-minute updates for things like construction and accidents. The Finance app, on the other hand, didn’t see much in the way of changes, gaining a refreshed watchlist, interactive charts that can be customized, and US stock updates in real time.

The Sports app gains 29 new sports leagues after updating, making for a total of 65 leagues across a variety of sports, including football, soccer, basketball, baseball, and more. The Travel app also got a bit of an update, gaining new content from Frommer’s, Lonely Planet, and Fodor’s. Flights can be booked from within the app, which is pretty convenient. And finally, there’s the Weather app, which now offers dynamic animated maps that show the weather into the future. Users can choose by cloud cover, temperature, and more.

Minibar: A Classier Cocktail App to Get You Drunk in Style

Cocktail apps are nothing new, but as they generally appeal to a demographic practically willing to drink gasoline so long as it’ll give ’em a buzz, none really offered the refinement and knowledge we were looking for. Nothing, that is, until Minibar. More »
