The legendary electronica label Ninja Tune has done what many have contemplated, but no one has crushed: It launched an app, Ninja Jamm, that lets anyone remix music with (relative) ease, using a variety of high-quality releases from world-renowned DJs, producers, and other artists. More »
Our smartphone apps these days can perform a fair number of tasks, ranging from simple reminders, to more complex such as tracking our location, places we’ve run, how far we’ve run and etc. However an app that could in theory hack aircraft? That just sounds dangerous, but unfortunately it is all too real. Hugo Teso, a security consultant who happens to be a trained commercial pilot, claims to have developed an Android app that can make an aircraft “dance to his tune” by hacking its flight management systems. The hack was shown off at the Hack In The Box conference where the app, dubbed PlaneSploit, was able to seek out targets by infiltrating radio broadcasts between the aircraft and air traffic control, and then hijacking it by sending malicious messages to take over the plane. As it stands, the app is more of a proof-of-concept software and presumably will not be making its way into app stores anytime soon, so hopefully those in charge of security will be looking into this ASAP!

Yesterday we reported that Viber would be bringing its VoIP app support to Blackberry 7, and while the final release has yet to be made available, a beta version of the app is now available for download for Blackberry 7 devices. The official/final version is expected to be released shortly after, so we can assume that if there’s nothing wrong with this beta, we wouldn’t be surprised if the app is released next week or sometime in the very near future. Interestingly, the beta version of Viber is only available for Blackberry OS 5 and OS 7, and if you’re wondering why it skipped OS 6, it seems that there are some “inherent limitations” in Blackberry OS 6 that will not allow the app to work. Strange. In any case if you’d like to check the app out, you can head on over to Viber’s website for the download.

Looking to jumpstart interest in its in-house ecosystem, LG is adding PayPal as a software purchasing option for its latest line of smart TVs, making it the first manufacturer to natively use the service. Available now in the US, Canada and UK, this new addition will let you use either a traditional or Magic remote to navigate an onscreen keyboard when buying apps, games or $50 worth of 3D Disney movie rentals. The real potential time saver here is the addition of an optional “remember me” feature which lets users store their PayPal account information for faster purchases. Look for the service to expand to Australia, France, Germany and Italy sometime this month, with other markets set to follow later.

Foursquare just issued an update to its iOS app, and while the version number moves up to an even 6.0, there are not a lot of big changes to be had, but the few changes there are, are quite noteworthy. Specifically, Foursquare has moved its Explore feature to the home page, bringing you recommendations right when you open the app.
The app puts more emphasize on Search as well, allowing you to quickly find an establishment, or browse places that are trending and popular in your area. The map area is also easily expandable, allowing you to see where nearby Foursquare friends are located, as well as explore interesting and places using the map view.
The app also received a couple of design modifications, most notably the relocation of the Check-In button, which is now placed at the bottom of the screen, and it stays static even when you scroll through the app. Tapping on it will let you check into a place just like normal — that aspect of the app hasn’t changed.
In place of where the Check-In button used to be is now where notifications exist. It’s a larger button this time around, allowing you to easily check any notifications that have come in. Overall, the recommendations engine is the big kicker here. The system uses the time of day, how familiar you are with the neighborhood, and places that are currently popular to give you relevant places that you might want to check out. Foursquare is a free download and the update is available now in iTunes.

While we’re sure that many developers out there are probably focusing their efforts on creating new apps for the Blackberry 10 platform, this does not mean that developers have forgotten about the older Blackberry 7. Earlier this year, Viber did promise to bring VoIP support to the Viber app for Blackberry 7 device, and given that we’re already in April, we have to wonder if Viber had completely forgotten or if the plans have been scrapped. Well thanks to a reader from Berry Review who reached out to Viber for an answer, the good news is that yes, the VoIP support is still on track and will be released in April. According to what Viber had to say, the release is apparently very close now so hopefully we will be seeing it in the next week or so. In the meantime we will keep our eyes peeled for more information, so check back with us at a later date for the details.
