Facebook Extends VOIP Calling To The UK

Facebook Extends VOIP Calling To The UKFacebook announced earlier this year that its VOIP service would be launched initially to users in North America. Now the good news is that Facebook has decided to expand their offering and is now offering the same service to Facebook users in the UK. This VOIP feature is part of Facebook’s Messenger app that is available for mobile devices, like the iPhone. Facebook’s VOIP feature acts like a regular voice call, with the ability to leave voice messages in the event that your friend is offline. At this point in time we’re not sure when Facebook will roll this service out to other regions, so we guess you guys will have to be patient for now. In the meantime those in the UK will be able to look forward to this new service/feature.

Apple’s New App Store Submission Guidelines Requires All Apps To Be Compatible With Retina Displays

Apples New App Store Submission Guidelines Requires All Apps To Be Compatible With Retina DisplaysI’m not sure about you guys, but I realized that there are still quite a few apps out there that have yet to take advantage of the iPhone 5’s taller display. While the black frames help the app to blend in with the black iPhone 5, I find myself missing keys because I’m used to the taller display. It’s not a big issue but apparently Apple is looking to standardize their apps across the board, and thankfully so. According to a new set of guidelines Apple released to their developers, new app submissions and updates submitted to the iTunes App Store has to be designed with the Retina display and the iPhone 5’s display in mind. This new policy will be taking effect come 1st of May.

Starting May 1, new apps and app updates submitted to the App Store must be built for iOS devices with Retina display and iPhone apps must also support the 4-inch display on iPhone 5. Learn about preparing your apps by reviewing the iOS Human Interface Guidelines.

I don’t know about you guys but that sounds good to me. Who else was a bit frustrated that WhatsApp took the longest time to update itself to the iPhone 5’s display?

Microsoft reportedly prepping significant firstparty app updates for Windows 8 and Windows RT

A batch of first-party app updates could be incoming for Windows 8 very soon that have nothing to do with Microsoft’s cross-platform Blue crush. That’s according to CNet‘s Mary Jo Foley, whose sources have indicated that the refresh, previously rumored to arrive by month’s end, would also apply to Windows RT. Microsoft’s yet to officially comment on the matter, but as you can see from the screen above, users have already reported seeing a list of “installation ready” applications within the System log now. As for that round of major OS revamps, Foley says that’s still on track and should begin to rollout sometime this summer.

Amazon Appstore celebrates its second year with free apps, cake (for today only)

Amazon Appstore celebrates its second year with free apps, cake for today only

Did the word free in the headline grab your attention, or was it the cake? Either way, Amazon’s Appstore is throwing a party to mark its second birthday, and there’s a goody bag of software for anyone who attends. It’s been a good month for Android users, as Google’s Play store had its own shindig recently, and like last year, Amazon’s been treating Appstore patrons to discounts all week. For its official anniversary today, though, a tray-full of apps can be downloaded gratis. Admittedly, the selection isn’t fantastic, but you should find one or two things worth at least the time it takes to click ’em — Chu Chu Rocket, may we suggest (long live Dreamcast!). Remember, you’ve gotta be quick, as the offers expire at the end of the day. But enough from us. Head to the source link for cake and more.

Speedtest.net for iOS updates with all-new design

When it comes to all of the interesting apps that do one thing well, Speedtest.net is one of the best out there, and we sometimes use it to test out new LTE markets for hands-on sessions and reviews. The app gives you both your download and upload speeds either over WiFi or a data connection, and it received a big update today for iOS users. It comes with an all-new design, as well as iPhone 5 support, and a few new features.

speedtest

The redesign features a Tron-esque look to it, and it’s completely different from the web version, which it replicated in the past and didn’t look that great, honestly. The newly-designed app features neon buttons and dials, which give it that futuristic look that it pulls off quite well. Plus, there are some new sorting features that users will love.

Users can now sort results by either type, time, download speed, upload speed, or ping. Tapping on a result will also provide more information about that specific test, including where the test was taken, giving users a comprehensive history of their WiFi or data speed results, making sure they’re getting the speeds they’re paying for.

speedtest-ads

Users can now more easily share results with friends, using email, Facebook, Twitter, or iOS Messages. The app is completely free, but it comes with ads. However, Speedtest.net finally has a paid version that’s ad-free, although it’s in the form of an in-app purchase rather than another paid app. Users can pay a one-time fee of $0.99 to remove all the ads.

Apple Questioned By Australian Parliament Over “Price Gouging”

Apple Questioned By Australian Parliament Over Price GougingFor those living in the US and who think that Apple’s products are already expensive, you might want to rethink that stance because in countries such as Australia, Apple’s products are even more expensive despite the Australian dollar being valued higher compared to the USD (AUD1 = USD1.0445). To that extent many are wondering why in spite of that, Apple Australia and other companies such as Microsoft and Adobe are charging higher prices than their US counterpart. That question is currently being asked in an Australian Parliament inquiry where executives from Microsoft, Adobe and Apple were called to explain their “price gouging” practices. (more…)
