Spotify Said To Be Negotiating Better Rates, Possibly Extending Free Trials For Mobile Devices

Spotify Said To Be Negotiating Better Rates, Possibly Extending Free Trials For Mobile DevicesIf you use Spotify on your computer and you’re thinking of perhaps subscribing to its service on your mobile device but you’re unsure, you might be in luck because according to The Verge, their sources have revealed to them that in the coming days, Spotify is expected to meet with the major labels in the recording industry and not only will they be asking for a substantial price break, but they are also expected to ask for the rights to extend their free pricing tier to mobile devices.

The Verge expects that Spotify will be in a good negotiating position since they claim that music downloads from services such as Apple’s iTunes have slowed, and aren’t doing well enough to make up for the decline in CD purchases. Not to mention if Spotify can land this deal, they will definitely have the competitive advantage, especially since there are rumors that have indicated that Apple could be interested in launching a streaming service of their own, similar to Pandora. According to the report, Spotify has already begun their negotiations with Warner Music and is expected to begin talks with the other major labels, such as Sony and Universal, in the coming weeks.

Spotify To Make Its Way Onto Blackberry 10If you were worried that Blackberry 10 would be void of quality and big-name apps, you might want to rethink that because it looks like Spotify will be making its way onto Blackberry World in the future. This was confirmed by the folks at N4BB who managed to get an exclusive look and demo of the app, although the downside is that they were not allowed to take any photos, so we will have to wait until it has been released to see how it will look like. According to N4BB, the app is completed and now it’s just up to the developers to release it into Blackberry World. No word on when that will be taking place, but N4BB is speculating that major apps such as Skype, Kindle and Spotify could be released once the Blackberry Z10 hits the US market. As it stands T-Mobile and AT&T are expecting the Z10, with T-Mobile expecting a mid-March launch.

Chrome gets app launcher on Windows dev preview, OS X and Linux to nab it soon

Chrome gets app launcher on Windows dev preview, OS X and Linux to nab it soon

Chromebooks have had the luxury of an app launcher for quite a while, but now Windows users can get in on the action too, provided they download the latest version of Chrome from the browser’s dev channel. In order for the launcher to appear in the taskbar, however, those running the fresh release will need to install a Chrome packaged app — an application written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript that opens outside the browser and works offline by default. Packaged programs aren’t searchable on the Chrome Web Store just yet, but folks can code their own or head to the Chromium Blog for a pair of software suggestions. Linux and Mac OS X are penciled in to receive the launcher soon via the dev channel, but there’s no word on when it might find its way into a mainstream release of Chrome. PS4 to get companion social app for tablets, PS Vita

PS4 to get companion social app for tablets, PS Vita

Sony’s just begun to show us what’s been up its sleeve for the PlayStation 4, and it turns out that it’s got social networking and the second screen on its mind. Gamers will be able to share ten second video clips of their gameplay, stream play sessions online to friends and “keep in touch with the evolving world of your game, regardless of your location.” The network will also learn a player’s likes and dislikes, and automatically download content it figures users will dig. Hirai and Co. are also planning PS Vita and tablet apps for folks to partake in the social experiences when they’re not near their PS4.

OTG Lays The Foundation For A Connected Airport That Speaks Your Language, Whatever That Language May Be

iPad GUI PSD

OTG, the restaurateur that made waves when it installed free access iPads in some of the world’s busiest international airport hubs last year, is improving its existing system with the deployment of a translation system that will allow it to provide translation of its restaurant menus in 13 different languages. The system is already live in test deployments at locations like Toronto’s Pearson airport, and CEO Rick Blatstein tells me it’s already having a positive impact on sales at OTG-run restaurants.

The effort will soon encompass 20 languages and see wider deployment in more of the airports where OTG is already operating in North America, including LaGuardia and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Blatstein said that his company quickly saw the value in offering multi-lingual support after realizing that at Pearson, for example, English is the first language of only around 40 percent of travelers at any given time on average.

“We have all of our menus and everything translated and tested ahead of time so that when you push the flag of your language, it automatically translates that for you,” Blatstein said. The idea is to make travelers feel more at ease, since they’re able to communicate in their own language. Ordering can happen right from the iPad kiosks, meaning there’s no chance of encountering language-barrier problems between travelers and serving staff.

OTG’s iPad deployment also provides travelers with access to Facebook, Twitter, flight status information, and more without charging them. The aim is to make air passengers feel less like a captive audience and more like treasured guests when spending time in the airports that frequent travelers likely know all too well. The translation service, applied at launch to restaurant offerings, is a first step, according to Blatstein, and one that will eventually make its way to the company’s offerings outside of its restaurateur endeavors, too. Customers could soon order commercial goods from iPads in the language of their choice, Blatstein suggests, or set up accommodations or ground transit at their destination ahead of time.

Airports can maintain multi-lingual staff, and cater to the most common languages spoken at their hubs, but you can’t cater to all the various people from every neck of the woods at every location all of the time. But with an iPad-supplemented customer-service model with built-in translation services, you actually might be able to be everything to everyone. OTG isn’t quite there yet, but it’s making big steps in that direction, and that could make air travel (or at least the parts in between) much more pleasant for all involved.

AT&T and The Cloud join forces to offer 1GB of free roaming data in the UK

AT&T subscribers who venture overseas to the UK can now utilize a free gigabyte of roaming data thanks to a deal with The Cloud. By downloading its Wi-Fi International app, those who have the right International data package through the carrier can authenticate to 16,000 wireless Internet hotspots located throughout the United Kingdom. Check out the particulars, as well as a few screenshots, after the jump.

The deal allows AT&T subscribers who have Data Global Add-on with Wi-Fi to download the Wi-Fi International app and use it to connect to compatible wireless hotspots. The app is available for both Android users via the Play Store (version 3.2 or higher for tablets and 2.2 or higher for smartphones) and iOS (version 4.3 and higher) users via the App Store.

The obvious issue here is that those without the International add-on will have to subscribe to it in order to take advantage of the free 1GB of wifi data, something that doesn’t seem worth it for such a relatively small amount. The most appeal then will likely fall to those who travel to the U.K regularly and don’t want to be dependent entirely on mobile data connections.

Those who download the Wi-Fi International app will be able to connect to hotspots without having to deal with usernames and passwords. A notification will be given when a partner hotspot is within range of the user’s device. And, of course, users will be able to search for nearby networks based on the country and city they are located in.
