Skype for Windows 8 preview, user interface revealed in web leak

Skype for Windows 8 preview, user interface revealed in web leak

Wondering what Skype’s Windows 8 interface might look like? Sure, you could use your imagination — and probably guess the design with a fair amount of accuracy — or you can poke around an early hands-on over at Neowin, complete with a half-dozen UI grabs. While still in preview state, the app appears to be “relatively solid,” enabling calls and chats with “little issue.” From the looks of it, touch fiends will be able to tap around just as accurately as their mouse-bound counterparts can click, with large buttons available throughout. Judging by the app’s current state, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect a more formal appearance any day now, letting early Windows 8 users take the native app for a spin before the rest of us get access in the fall. Hit up our source link below for a gallery of screen grabs.

Remember the world as it is right now before you knew about RastaCam. Line Messenger makes its way onto Blackberry devices, offers BBM integration

If you were envious of your iOS and Android toting friends who alternative messaging services like Line, fret not as it seems that the Line messenger app has finally made its way onto Blackberry smartphones. For those curious as to what Line is about, well essentially Line is another messenger service much like BBM, WhatsApp, Viber and etc. One of the main differences of Line is the ability to send “stickers”, which as pictured above are basically larger emoticons, thus allowing your chats to be a bit more colorful and dynamic and humorous, although be prepared to be spammed with these stickers as your friends discover its immense novelty value. As an added bonus, it seems that Line for Blackberry devices will feature BBM integration as well. If you own a Blackberry device and you’d like to get your hands on the app, you can download it via the Blackberry App World where additional details of the app can also be found.

Microsoft starts publishing Windows Phone apps again

Microsoft temporarily stopped publishing apps for its Windows Phone Marketplace recently after issues with some of its certificates led to problems for some Windows Phone users. The reason Microsoft temporarily stopped publishing apps was that a glitch with digital certificates used to sign apps led to some applications not installing properly. The good news was that the glitch was on the part of Microsoft so the issue wasn’t on user’s phones.

The issue only affected users who had Windows Phone smartphones that were upgraded to version 7.5 the operating system. Phones that came with Mango installed were fine. Microsoft has now announced that it has fixed the digital certificate issue and has resumed publishing new apps. The software giant says that it will take a day or two for the repair to deploy completely and newly published apps will begin appearing in the Marketplace again.

In addition to the original issue only affecting users who had upgraded their smartphones to Windows Phone Mango, the issue only applied to apps published over a few days. Microsoft still recommends that users don’t uninstall apps that are having problems updating or installing because the app might not be available for download again for a few days.

Microsoft also notes that apps that were in the process of being published when the issue was discovered will automatically have the fix applied. The developers don’t need to do anything. Windows Phone users who have been plagued with problems to update apps that refused to update will be glad when this issue is over.

ROCCAT Power-Grid Android version on its way, we go hands-on with the keyboard-augmenting app (video)

ROCCAT Powergrid Android version in the pipeline, we go handson with the keyboardaugmenting app video

ROCCAT’s plans to fight back against Razer’s glowing customizable macro-keys and touchscreens are nearing the finish line. Here at Gamescom, the mouse and keyboard maker’s Power-Grip app was at a nearly-finished stage on the iPhone. Better still, the Android version was close behind it — although it was slightly less polished. The idea is to add a wealth of touchscreen widgets and quickly viewable data to your smartphone, sidestepping the need for pricier hardware solutions. That said, there are plans for ROCCAT to create some happy medium between the rogue smartphone interface and its more standard keyboard, with ideas gravitating towards a docking space for your phone built into the keyboard. We took the slightly more temperamental Android version for a spin on ROCCAT CEO Rene Korte’s Galaxy S III — check what the app’s likely to offer on its December release in our hands-on after the break.

Dunkin Donuts payment app available

Dunkin Donut has launched its first payment app on Android and iOS. With it, customers can basically pay for their purchases using pre-charged money from either a credit card or a Dunkin Donuts card. At the moment, there is no “cart” or other possibility to prepare an order from the app.

The Dunkin donut app works very much like the Starbucks app (if you’ve seen it). In the end, the customer shows a barcode that is scanned by the in-store mobile payment system. While this is interesting, it doesn’t make the process faster, which is usually the main appeal of these systems. For example, if customers could build their order on the phone and have it scanned to order+pay at the same time, things would move much faster. That’s not the case, for now. (more…)
