Cyber Dust Messaging App Deletes Texts 24 Seconds After It Has Been Read

Cyber Dust Messaging App Deletes Texts 24 Seconds After It Has Been ReadOne of the appeals of Snapchat is the ability to send photos over the app and have it erase itself after a certain amount of time. This will allow users to send photos that might not meant for outside eyes and rest easy knowing that the photos will eventually get deleted. Billionaire Mark Cuban has a similar idea called Cyber Dust which is basically a new messaging app that will delete a text message 24 seconds after it has been read.

In fact Cuban stresses that the messages are not even stored on Cyber Dust’s servers meaning that they cannot be traced and cannot be retrieved once they have been deleted. Cuban has described the app as WhatsApp meets Snapchat. According to him, the inspiration for the app came about when the SEC took a text message he gave them and took it out of context.

“[It’s also realizing] That the phone companies and your text recipients own your texts and even the most innocent text can take on a whole new context. I wanted to have a means of communication that is analogous to face to face – where you can speak openly and honestly. That is why we created Cyber Dust.”

He also stated that these values also applies to his kids. “This is applicable to my kids.  I don’t want an innocent text my daughter sends to a boy taking on a life of its own and living on forever online because some kid decides to add a story and posts her text.” As it stands the app itself is free for download for iOS while an Android version is on its way.

IFTTT App Could Be Coming To Android Soon

IFTTT App Could Be Coming To Android SoonYou guys might recall that a while back, an app called IFTTT launched on the iPhone. The name is short of “If This Than That” which is a nod to programming where programmers create if-then-else scenarios for specific events. For those unfamiliar with the app, it basically helps to automate your smartphone even further by allowing users to setup recipes.

For example you could set it so that you will only be notified of emails whenever it comes from a particular address. You could also set it so that every photo you snap will be saved to the cloud or sent to your email as a copy. There are also recipes that will notify you about the weather in the morning so that’s the first thing you see when you wake up, and so on.

The good news is that it looks like IFTTT’s exclusivity on iOS is over as the developers have recently announced that they are planning on launching a beta of the app for Android. Oddly enough the post, which was spotted by Phandroid on Google+, has since been deleted although we’re not sure why. Perhaps it went out a bit too early, or perhaps the post was only meant to be seen by certain parties, and not everyone.

Either way we guess the cat is already out of the bag and while we have no idea when the app will be released, we can at least take comfort in knowing that it will be released for Android hopefully in the near future. That and the fact that Android isn’t as tightly controlled as iOS, hopefully this means that we can expect even more interesting recipes. Heck, perhaps developers will find a way to create recipes for rooted devices as well.

In the meantime for iOS users, the app is available for download and is available for both the iPhone and iPad, so head on over to the iTunes App Store for the download.

Apple Reportedly Testing Map Notifications To Inform Users Of Fixed Problems

Apple Reportedly Testing Map Notifications To Inform Users Of Fixed ProblemsFrom time to time whenever we run into an issue with an app or software, we have the option of sending in a bug report in hopes that the company will fix it. We expect that developers receive many such reports a day. Sometimes it could be an intended function that confused a user into thinking it’s a bug, and sometimes it’s a legitimate claim. The point is that there are probably a ton of reports that need to be sifted through.

That being said, how are we to know that an issue has been fixed or acknowledged at the very least? Well Apple is apparently looking into such a feature, according to a report from a reader of MacRumors who recently claimed that Apple is apparently testing a feature in its Maps application that will notify users when an error has been fixed.

As we’re sure many of you guys are aware by now, Apple Maps isn’t exactly the most accurate of Map apps available at the moment and has it fair share of instances where it has provided users with the wrong directions. Apple has since encouraged users to submit any issues or errors that they might have spotted and thanks to this feature, it will prompt users when a problem has been fixed.

Apparently this feature is currently being tested as not many people have noticed it (there are a handful who have) and there has been some difficulty replicating it ever since, but hopefully this is a feature that Apple will roll out in earnest in the near future, or perhaps with the release of iOS 8.

In the meantime what do you guys think? Will you appreciate being notified when a bug or issue you reported has been fixed, or would you rather that developers just work quietly in the background and assume that they will get around to fixing it?

Office For iPad Team Confirms Print Feature Is Coming “In Due Course”

Office For iPad Team Confirms Print Feature Is Coming In Due CourseEarlier when Office for iPad was launched, one of the features that many noticed were missing was its ability to print directly from the iPad app itself. According to Microsoft, a rather vague statement seemed to suggest that printing would be arriving at a later date and this was confirmed during a recent Reddit AMA that the Office for iPad team did.

According to the team, it was confirmed that printing is a feature that will be introduced to the app in the future. This was revealed by Sangeeta Mudnal, the group program manager for Excel, who wrote, “Print is a high demand feature that we intend to introduce in due course.” (more…)

German Carrier Launches WhatsApp Specific SIM Card Deal

German Carrier Launches WhatsApp Specific SIM Card DealWhatsApp is proving itself to be an extremely popular instant messenger app. Recent stats revealed that the company processes about 64 billion messages a day which is a lot of messages being sent and received by its users. It could also explain why Facebook might be interested in the company and were willing to pay an eye-watering $19 billion for it.

Now it seems that WhatsApp’s popularity and its ubiquity have resulted in a German carrier creating a special prepaid SIM card that will give users unlimited access to WhatsApp on top of data limits. What this means is that you will be able to send and receive WhatsApp messages without it eating into your regular data which would make it great for power users and for tourists traveling to Germany but would like to keep in touch with friends and family with the app. (more…)

Decision To Ship Office For iPad Was Made During Steve Ballmer’s Tenure

Decision To Ship Office For iPad Was Made During Steve Ballmers TenureThe rumors about Office for iPad have made their rounds for a couple of years, so we have to wonder why did it take Microsoft so long before the apps were finally shipped to iPad users? Could it be that the former-CEO, Steve Ballmer, had issues with Office for iPad and delayed it and that Microsoft’s new CEO, Satya Nadella, was the one that gave it the greenlight?

Well it turns out that maybe Office for iPad took long than it should have for other reasons, but Steve Ballmer was definitely not one of them. Speaking during a Reddit AMA session, the team that put together Office for iPad revealed that the decision to ship the apps was made by Nadella became the new CEO. (more…)

A Calorie Tracking Image Recognition App Keeps Portions Under Control

Worried that you’ve piled your plate too high at the buffet? Researchers at SRI—the folks who created Siri before Apple bought it—are working on a new app that uses image recognition and clever AI to provide a fairly accurate estimate of the calories you’re about to consume.

Facebook On iPhone Could Be Responsible For Huge Battery Drain

Facebook On iPhone Could Be Responsible For Huge Battery DrainYesterday we reported that according to a former Apple Genius Bar technician, Scotty Loveless, it was found that quitting your apps by “killing” it via the multitask screen might actually lead to a bigger battery drain instead of the opposite. Now according to Loveless, it seems that there is another culprit that adds to the iPhone battery drain and it is none other than everyone’s favorite social networking app, Facebook.

Yup, you heard that right, if you’re the type of person who checks their Facebook all day, there is a good chance you will be draining your phone’s battery faster than you might think. That’s pretty obvious we guess since using any app constantly throughout the day can cause battery drain. However it turns out that Facebook’s features and ambitions are what’s draining your phone’s battery even faster. (more…)

Play Store Updated With “People” Section, Shows Apps Recommended By Friends

Play Store Updated With People Section, Shows Apps Recommended By FriendsSometimes the best way to find out about a new app is by your friends recommending it to you. Unlike you having to download it and try it for yourself, seeing how it is being used by your friends or have them describe it to you will probably clue you in better on how you might be able to use it on your own device.

In a recent Play Store update, it seems that Google will be doing just that by including a “People” section in the app. Basically what the section does is that it shows you the list of apps that your friends are sharing, thus giving you an idea of what sort of apps they are using and which apps they are recommending.

Much like how iOS’ Game Center can be used to discover new games by seeing what types of games your friends or contacts are playing, we guess the same can be achieved through the Play Store’s “People” section. The section does not cover only apps but pretty much anything that can be bought in the Play Store, which includes books, movies, music, and so on.

The “People” section will also show how your friends have rated their purchases so that you know whether or not the app/book/movie/album is worth your time and your money. So if you have not updated your Play Store app yet, be sure to do so and you can start browsing right away! So, who else is pleased by this update?
