Malware invades Apple’s App Store for iOS, only harasses Windows users

Malware invades Apple's App Store for iOS, but only affects Windows users

Windows users can’t catch a break with viruses, even when they’re getting software for their Apple device. An app called “Instaquotes Quotes Cards for Instagram” was found to contain a worm called “Worm.VB-900,” which isn’t a threat to iOS itself or any other MacOS platform. However, users who tend to their apps with a Windows machine are susceptible to the baddie — also known affectionately as Mal/CoiDung-A. Any antimalware should detect it since it’s been up to no good since 2009, but Cupertino has already pulled the app and the vendor is working on a virus-free version. Just goes to show — if you’re on a PC, it pays to watch out for worms when you bite into a strange Apple.

AOL redesigns its Play music player app for the Kindle Fire, premium version is free tomorrow

AOL redesigns its Play music app for the Kindle Fire

Well, looky here. Engadget’s very own parent company AOL has released its Play music player app for Kindle Fire, and the interface here is actually considerably different from what you’d get on the straight Android version, available in Google Play. The product people behind the application say they re-tooled the design to match the Fire’s 7-inch, 1,024 x 600 screen (and also, the tablet’s heavily skinned UI, based on Android). Other than the facelift, there seems to be a good deal of overlap in functionality between this and the Google Play version: access to more than 55,000 Shoutcast radio stations and the ability to share favorite songs over Twitter and Facebook. Also like the main Android version, there’s a so-called CD Listening Party feature that opens up free, complete albums, with selections changing weekly. (Naturally, you can also use the app to listen to your own MP3s stored locally on the device, but you probably gathered that.) Play will be available as a free, ad-supported app, though you can also get an advert-free version for 99 cents. Download tomorrow, though (that would be Wednesday, Eastern Standard Time), and you can get the premium one gratis.

Yesterday saw Microsoft publicly unpack Office 15. Part of the deal was the forthcoming dedicated OneNote MX Metro-styled app. While we knew it was coming, it was one of the few things we didn’t manage to get much time with. It looks like we might not have to wait that long though, as it’s the first of new gang to be up for grabs. It’s available to download now, from the Windows Store in Windows 8 Release Preview, just set a final reminder in your current note taking app to go get it.

Savi People brings 'smarter' contacts to iPhone, integrates with your favorite social networks

If you haven’t been completely content with the stock Contacts app on your renowned Cupertino handset, and were wishing there was a little more to squeeze out of it — there might just be something in the App Store waiting to meet your needs. Enter Savi People. The 99-cent application essentially brings all your address book connections into one hub, but what separates it from the Contacts you’ve come to know is its integration with most of your preferred social networks — you know, the likes of Twitter, Facebook and, with the latest update, Instagram. Assuming you give Savi People the credentials to get into your accounts, you’ll be tweeting, sending direct messages and posting on people’s walls in no time directly from the app. You can grab Savi People for a little less than a dollar right now, though that could change at any time as it is a “special” price.

BBC releases Olympics app, streams the glorious Games straight to your iOS or Android device

BBC releases Olympics app, streams the glorious Games straight to your iOS or Android device

The 2012 London Olympics Games are nearly upon us and the BBC just can’t hold back its excitement any longer. The Queen’s favorite broadcaster has released its Olympics app for both iOS (5.0 and above) and Android (2.2 and newer) devices, apps that for the most part look like wrappers for the company’s mobile Olympics pages. But, that’s not to say they don’t offer some excellent features, like guides to every competition, the ability to save stories to read offline later and, most importantly, up to 24 simultaneous live streams of video — once the Games actually get started in two weeks.

Update: We got a note from the Beeb indicating that there’s an international version as well — because those two dozen streams mentioned above certainly won’t work when you’re outside of the United Kingdom.

Former Windows Phone Director Robert Williams joins Amazon, stirs rumor pot

Former Windows Phone Director Robert Williams joins Amazon, stirs rumor pot

We’re no CSI, but if we were Amazon, planning to make a phone, we’d definitely want to make sure developers were happy, that we had some weight in the patent world, and had an idea of the end design. With that all sorted, we’d likely hire a senior Director of Business Development from a major competitor — which is exactly what has happened. Robert Williams, formerly of said position at Microsoft Windows Phone is joining his fellow WP alumni, Brandon Watson, over at camp Bezos as Director of the App Store. Of course, this could just be a strategic move on behalf of the company’s Android market, and the Amazon phone is still very much just a rumor, but with more pieces of the puzzle starting to fit, and the book seller’s ability to turn things on their head, we’re far from ruling it out just yet.

WSJ chimes in on Amazon smartphone rumors, says 4- to 5-inch device is in testing

Whether the possibility of an Amazon smartphone is growing any stronger or the Wall Street Journal just wants to prove it has sources too, the paper is saying parts suppliers are gearing up to build just such a device. According to the always informative unnamed sources, testing of a phone is underway, and mass production could start late this year or early next year. There’s still no revelations on what the software might be like or how the device could be sold, but the report does expand on Bloomberg’s initial revelations from last week by narrowing the possible size down to between 4- and 5-inches. Of course, if the rumors are correct then we’ll probably see a new Kindle Fire hit the streets first anyway, if it has any updated software to bring along then maybe we’ll have a better idea of what an Amazon phone could look like.

Apple: corrupt app update bug has been fixed

A large number of apps were affected by an upgrade crash bug on the iOS and OS X App Stores, a problem first spotted by Marco Arment, the developer of Instapaper. The story quickly gained traction, with Arment updating his blog highlighting all the apps that were stricken with the issue. Apple commented that it was looking into the problem last night, and has now confirmed that it has been fixed.

Speaking to AllThingsD, Apple outlined the cause of the problem: “We had a temporary issue that began yesterday with a server that generated DRM code for some apps being downloaded. The issue has been rectified and we don’t expect it to occur again.”

The issue seemed to step from the FairPlay DRM system, but everything has been resolved now. Any new updates pushed to the App Store shouldn’t be affected by the issue anymore, but if you still have the crashing issue then you’ll need to delete and reinstall your app.

Bloomberg: Amazon is planning a smartphone

While most of the Amazon hardware rumors since the Kindle Fire launched have centered around a 10-inch version of the tablet, Bloomberg’s “people with knowledge of the matter” say a smartphone is in the works. The rumors center around a purported chase for wireless patents (presumably so Amazon can fight off the kinds of challenges currently faced by companies like Samsung and HTC) and partnership with Foxconn for manufacturing. There’s no details yet on what the device could be like or when it will arrive, but we’re not getting too excited right away — we’ve been down this road before with that Vizio Phone that never appeared. Amazon certainly has the infrastructure to enter the cellphone market with its appstore and media delivery services, but is anyone ready to jump into a two-year contract on a (presumably) reskinned-Android device?
