Apple gives App Store categories their own highlights, lets niche apps have 15 minutes of fame

Apple stealithly gives App Store categories their own highlights, lets niche apps have their 15 minutes of fame

It’s tough to find truly stellar mobile apps, no matter what platform you’re running, and that’s even truer when delving into categories. Apple has made a gesture towards giving more titles their moment in the sun through a low-key update to the App Store in iTunes and on iOS 6 devices. Jump to at least some categories, such as games or education, and you’ll get the same carousels, banners and other promotions that would normally be reserved for the main portal. The shift is a simple one, but it theoretically helps App Store shoppers go beyond the surface — and developers to reap the rewards.

Verizon will begin shutting down its app store in 2013

Verizon Wireless has announced plans to begin closing down its app store starting in January. Presently, Verizon’s marketplace is available on BlackBerry and compatible Android phones. The shutdown process will begin early next year, and is expected to be finished by March 27, according to the Verizon press release.

Verizon Apps was launched back in March 2010, back in the days of yester-year when app popularity became a sort of frenzy. Over time, however, the nature of apps and smartphones has shifted, and “there’s now a whole new tech landscape in which both consumers and developers can interact like never before.” This change marks a shift in Verizon’s business strategy.

Verizon reassures users that the majority of the apps available via Verizon Apps are also available elsewhere on the web, including the Google Play Store. The only exception to this upcoming change are business applications that were submitted to Verizon’s Private Applications Store for Business. These apps will still be available to enterprise customers.

According to Verizon’s published timeline, come December, monthly subscriptions “will end on the customers [sic] renewal anniversary date.” Then in January, the removal of Verizon’s marketplace will start. VDC Go To Market will shut down, but access to VDC activity and Portal Developer Registrations will stay available. The complete removal of Verizon Apps is then expected by the end of March.

Sony’s ‘Reader’ App finally re-launches on iOS, purchases handled through Apple

Sony's 'Reader' App finally relaunches on iOS, purchases handled through Apple

Sony’s Reader App for iOS launched way back in the heady days of 2010, long before Kindle’s had set Fire or gone Paperwhite. It was subsequently rejected by Apple, per the company’s longstanding policy of not approving software for iOS that bypassed Apple’s own in-app purchase system for a proprietary one. It’s been more than a few months at this point, but Reader has finally re-launched on the iOS App Store — free of charge, of course — and it’s got a brand new look based around the required Apple payment system. As The Digital Reader points out, Sony’s Reader looks an awful lot like the Bluefire iOS e-reader app, though we’d wager Sony’s store offers more in the way of literary choice.

Apple iMessage sees second outage in a week, iTunes UK follows suit (update: back up, in theory)

Apple iMessage sees second outage in a week, iTunes UK follows suit

Apple may have a lot of iMessage users, but it has also had its share of teething troubles as the chat service (and iCloud) grows. That’s certainly been true this month: Apple has confirmed that, for the second time in a week, iMessage is down for at least some users. There’s a real chance those conversations won’t go through unless it’s between iPhone users that can try SMS. More pressing for anyone in the UK is a wider iTunes outage, as we’ve heard multiple reports of the app and media repository being inaccessible in the country no matter what device they use. We’ve reached out to Apple and will update if there’s an explanation or a repair schedule for either outage. For now, we’d suggest that iMessage lovers communicate through social networks and passive-aggressive word choices in Letterpress.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: And no sooner than we post than Apple has iMessage back up and running. Let us know through tips if you’re still having iMessage or iTunes UK trouble, however.

Apple adds Rubles and other currencies to App Store, bumps minimum price to €0.89 in Europe

Apple adds Rubles and other currencies to app store, bumps minimum price to 089 in Europe

After announcing slightly under par financials, Apple has added more ways it can be paid for apps, though it also bumped the minimum freight to get one across Europe. The new lowest price users in France, Germany, Italy and other nations “over there” can pay for an app is now €0.89, a euro-dime bump from before — apparently due to the weak euro and local tax hikes. On the other hand, Cupertino also added more currencies accepted at its store: South African Rand, Turkish Lira, Russian Rubles, Indian Rupees, Isreali New Shekel’s, Saudi Arabian Riyal, Indonesian Rupish and UAE Dirham can all now be used to pay. Apple has tinkered with its prices before in varying amounts overseas depending on the nation, so you may want to check your own country’s App Store for the news — bad or good.

Apple unveils new version of iBooks with continuous scrolling, iBooks Author also updated

Apple CEO Tim Cook took to a San Jose theater stage today to unveil a new version of the company’s literature-based digital storefront, iBooks. Cook says it integrates better with iCloud, allows for quote sharing on Facebook and Twitter, and has support for “over 40 languages.” Beyond the app update info, Cook touted iBook’s sales exceeding 400 million books worldwide — not too shabby! The updated iBooks app should be available today on the iOS App Store, though it’s not there just yet.

Update: It looks like iBooks Author is also getting an update today, as Cook says new templates, fonts, and user-created fonts are now supported. Additionally, mathematical equations can now be inserted directly, and multitouch widgets will also work.

Adobe Reader for iOS and Android updated with cloud storage support

Adobe Reader update for Android and iOS adds cloud storage for viewing and editing on the go

On Monday, Adobe dropped details for an update to its iOS and Android versions of Reader. The most noteworthy enhancement here is the introduction of cloud file storage with Acrobat.com, which allows users to view and edit documents seamlessly across mobile and desktop devices, à la Google Docs Google Drive. Reader Mobile has also gained FormsCentral data support, improved selecting and highlighting of Asian text, and mobile document rights management with secure watermark support. If Android is your mobile platform of choice and you’d like to give these new features a spin, head on over to Google Play to claim your prize. iPhone owners, on the other hand, have a bit of a wait ahead of them. The update is still awaiting Apple’s approval before hitting the App Store.

Sony Playstation Mobile store now live, offers cross-platform games and apps from $0.80

Sony Playstation Mobile store now live, offers crossplatform games and apps from $080

After what feels like a mighty long time since it was first announced, Sony’s cross-platform PlayStation Mobile store is now up and running with an initial line-up of games (plus one lonely-looking app) for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Certified Android devices. That hardware category currently includes Sony’s latest tablets and Xperias, plus HTC One-branded handsets — check the source link for a full list and installation instructions. So far, we can access PSM on the Vita via a new tab on the PlayStation Store, and we know that readers are having luck on devices in the US — including the Xperia Play — but the One X (both global and AT&T) has only given us error messages. If you succeed or fail, please post your results below and we’ll update accordingly.

Update: Okay, there are definitely teething problems on HTC devices and we’re reaching out for an explanation. Meanwhile, owners of the Nexus 7 and the Xperia Ion on AT&T bring happier tidings.

[Thanks to Paul and all who’ve commented]

Apple’s app search engine goes dark, Chomp joins Ping in obsolescence

Apple's app search engine goes dark, Chomp joins Ping in obsolescence

Ping wasn’t the only Apple service to go offline at the tail end of September. Chomp, an app search engine purchased by Cook and Co. earlier this year, also closed up shop. In the spring, the service discontinued support for Android apps, and now its entire website and iOS application have been shuttered. Folks who still have the app installed are greeted with the bad news upon launching it: “Chomp has been discontinued as of September 30. Thanks for being a loyal user.” If you’re mourning the loss, we hear Yahoo would be delighted to make your acquaintance.
