Tabletop Arcade Machines: Half-Cabinet, Half-Amazing

We’ve seen a handful of tiny arcade machines, but Tiny Arcade Machines is way better. It’s a shop owned by YouTuber dabarduba, an electronics engineer in the UK. He makes compact arcade machines that fit on your desktop or bar counter. They look like arcade cabinets with their lower halves chopped off.

As you can see, dabarduba not only knows his electronics, he’s also got a degree in Appropriately Cheesy Arcade Cabinet Design. His machines come in both 1- and 2-player configuration; they can be loaded with thousands of arcade classics or rigged to play console or PC games. Here’s one of his machines running Street Fighter x Tekken:

You can see more videos of the machines on dabarduba’s YouTube channel. He also makes even tinier – but still functioning – machines, which are perfect for playing just one game, just like a traditional arcade machine.

The arcade machines are not cheap – they cost between £399 to £950 (~$600 to $1,500 USD) – but neither are back surgeries. You can order a unit from the Tiny Arcade Machines website, which also looks like it was made two decades ago. Seriously sir, you would get way more clients if you updated your website.

Guy Puts Donkey Kong in a Barrel: At Least It’s Not on Fire

It’s like beating Kong in a barrel… Wait, that’s not how the saying goes. But you can say it now. This custom-built Donkey Kong tabletop arcade machine has been put into a barrel. Why? So you can drink and game of course.

donkey kong
Joel Griffin Dodd wanted a fully functional game of Donkey Kong in an old barrel so that he could have beer and cocktails on top of it. How drunk can you get? You probably shouldn’t try to jump over it, though that’s better that than smashing it with a mallet, I suppose.

It looks like a fairly straightforward build. Just put together a mini arcade system and stick it inside a barrel. Then put some glass on top of course. Not that I thought of it or was able to build one myself. Nice work, Joel.

R-Kaid-42: A Complete Arcade in a Wooden Box

I guess you could say that most old arcade machines were made from wood, but it was mostly laminated pressboard, covered with shiny vinyl decals. Designer Love Hultén’s latest arcade build offers a much more timeless wooden styling.

r kaid 42 1

The R-Kaid-42 is a complete arcade console built into an elegant handcrafted walnut wood box. Inside, you’ll find a pair of high quality arcade joysticks and buttons, at the bottom of the stack is a compact PC with an SSD drive for emulating games. The joysticks themselves are wireless, and have solid brass handles and ball tops.

To play, simply detach the magnetic sections of the R-Kaid-42, screw in the joystick handles, and connect it to a VGA monitor and power. The system comes with a clean and minimal front-end for a variety of emulators which can play over 20,000 different games. All of this can be operated entirely using the arcade controls.

Best of all, you can actually buy the R-Kaid-42 for yourself over on Etsy. It’s selling for $970(USD), and while that might seem like a lot of money, I think it’s a steal for all of the work that went into this thing.

Father and Son Create Amazing Basement Arcade: No Quarters Required

Man, I have never been so jealous of another human being in my life. I wish I could play in this basement arcade, which is also a sort of small classic video game museum. This kickass arcade was created by redditor mertzlufft and his Dad over 6 years.

It took that long to get it all done with a lot of buying, selling and trading. Some of the games only cost as little as $200, but only because they needed some TLC.

I would never get anything done if this was in my house. My fingers would be nothing but calluses and my brain would be fried on these games from a hundred all-nighters. Check out more images of this epic home arcade over on Imgur.

Razer Atrox arcade stick entices Xbox 360 fighters with swappable parts

Razer Atrox arcade stick entices Xbox 360 fighters with pro focus, swappable parts

Look out, MadCatz — Razer’s ready to add an Xbox 360 arcade stick to its peripheral lineup. The $200 Atrox should please serious button mashers, thanks to Sanwa-sourced controls and completely customizable parts. A total of 10 buttons sit alongside the joystick, and you’ll find storage compartments for an additional stick and the bundled 13-foot detachable USB cable under the lid. Fighting game enthusiasts can pre-order the Atrox beginning on May 21st from Razer’s online store, with global availability set for June — Japan’s lucky shores will see it this month. There’s no word on variations for other systems, but that may be the price to pay for the integrated Xbox Live headset jack. Catch a render of its internals and a press release after the break.

Xronos Talking LED Alarm Clock: It’s Arcade Time!

Sure, alarm clocks are a dime a dozen these days – and many people even use their mobile gadgets instead of a traditional alarm. But if you’re looking for a truly geektastic looking alarm clock, you’ll want to check out the Xronos.

xronos clock 1

This custom-built alarm clock has a unique style that would look perfect in a home game room or a geeky bedroom. It’s got a large LED dot-matrix display that can display time in green, red or orange, as well as in several fonts. Adding to its gamer style is the fact that it’s programmed and snoozed using real arcade buttons. The clock offers both 12- and 24-hours modes and can also speak the time or date, as well as provide audio feedback when setting the time. You can even set independent alarms for each day of the week.

xronos clock 2

In addition to offering alarm functionality, the Xronos offers a built in temperature sensor. And since it’s built on the open source Arduino platform, you can customize the programming to your liking. But the customization doesn’t end there. Alarm sounds are stored on a MicroSD card, you can change those if the 10 built-in sounds don’t entice you to get out of bed.

You can check out the Xronos clock in action in the video clip below:

If you like what you see, head on over to Len’s Digital’s Etsy shop, where you can order the Xronos clock for $200(USD).

The Ultimate Arcade Game Cake

After years of thinking about it, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a custom MAME cabinet for my basement. It’s finally coming next week, so I can’t wait to try and beat these guy’s Donkey Kong high scores. Or not. But if I wasn’t getting my own arcade machine, I’d take this arcade cake instead. It’s definitely the next best thing.

arcade cake 1

This three-tier cake was made by Wedding Cakes by Nicole, and it features colorful images of classic arcade games on each of its sides. It’s got arcade-accurate versions of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Frogger, and even Pong.

arcade cake 2

It’s even got arcade-style buttons and a coin slot. Though I bet if you tried to mash on those buttons, you’d get food coloring all over your fingertips. The only thing its missing is a couple of paddle controllers for Pong, but I’ll forgive Nicole that.

I wonder if that joystick is edible. I so want it to be a red jawbreaker.

Vintage Execution Arcade Machine: Hangman, Anyone?

I’ve seen some strange stuff over the years, but this has to take the cake as the most unusual arcade machine I’ve ever seen.

the execution arcade machine

This rare vintage penny arcade machine simulates an execution. Just put in your coin, and a tiny hanging will be performed, as a bell rings out and a little figure is dropped through the gallows. Delightful fun!

the execution arcade machine 1

The machine originally took British pennies, but was modified to accept U.S. quarters at some point.

the execution arcade machine 2

This rare machine was created by Charles Ahrens, and is currently for sale over on eBay, with a Buy-it-Now price of $17,499.99(USD).

Is it just me, or does this thing seem like something you’d find as you wander around Columbia in Bioshock Infinite, somewhere between the vending machines and the kinetoscopes.

Stop Motion Post-it Arcade Animation: Sticky Pixels

Okay arcade fans, prepare to have your mind blown. This stop-motion animation made from Post-It notes looks like real arcade game footage. It is completely amazing and has me nerding out. All of your favorites are represented. Well, not all, but several classic games are well represented.

post it pixel animation

It features Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Mega Man, Zelda and more. What you’re about to watch is 5,722 individual still frame images lovingly converted into an animation.

This feat was accomplished by Michael Birkin, who has a lot of free time and an amazing talent. Michael says it took him all of his weekends and holidays for the last 11 months to complete using 4800 Post-its and traditional stop-motion techniques. And while it’s possible it could have been computer animated (due to the barely-changing shadows and reflections), it’s still the coolest thing you will see all day.

And if Michael isn’t an awesome stop-motion animator, he’s an awesome computer animator. Either way, it’s a win.

Beer Pong Arcade Machine Tests Your Kid’s Beer Pong Skills

It’s undeniable the “sport” of beer pong has become extremely popular over the years for college-aged young people as well as the occasional adult get-together where beer, red plastic cups and beer are readily available. But as of now, there are no places outside a dorm room where you can show off your beer pong talents, that is, until this Beer Pong Arcade Machine starts rolling out to the fifteen arcades left in the U.S.

Beer Pong Master was created by Bay Tek Games and shown off at a recent Nightclub & Bar Show in Las Vegas. The game allows up to four players to play as you test your beer pong skills against a 60-second timer. Just as in real-life beer pong, the objective is to throw your ping pong ball into one of the red plastic cups, although Beer Pong Master keeps cups that need to be filled lit up, while dimming cups containing a ping pong ball.
