Archos to release Android phone / tablet

We’re guessing we’ll hear more about this at MWC, but TI just let loose a press release crowing about Archos’s use of the OMAP3 processor in an upcoming “Internet Media Tablet” that runs on Android and also doubles as a phone. No pictures yet, but the spec sheet makes it sound like a hotrodded Archos 5: five-inch screen, up to a 500GB hard drive, a battery capable of 7 seven hours of video playback, and Flash support, all in a package just 10mm (.39 inches) thick. The underlying OS will be Android, but Archos plans to really beef up the media features — there’s even mention of HD video playback. That sounds seriously sweet — if Archos ditches the current mushy resistive screen in the 5 for a capacitive unit, this could be a knockout Android device when it launches in the third quarter.

APSI’s WinCE-based M480 can’t quite reach Archos’ level

We can’t really knock the folks at APSI for trying to make the M480 into a product it’s not, but in all seriousness, this thing is just two curved edges away from KIRFing the Archos 5. That said, there’s no doubt this piece is trying to get all up in Archos’ grille, with an expansive 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, 30GB / 60GB of internal storage, a TV output, dual-core 400MHz OMAP2530 processor and a battery good for six to seven hours (with audio) / four to five hours (with video). There’s even support for a multitude of file formats, but the lackluster Windows CE 5.0 operating system essentially murders any chance it had at being successful. Sorry, buddy — better luck next time.

Archos 10 netbook sits down for a photo shoot

The Archos 10 netbook was loosed into the crowds early this morning, and already Laptop has a hands-on up. Comically enough, this 10-inch machine is actually the largest product ever launched by the company, as it generally focuses on handheld PMPs and the like. Specs wise, it’s about as vanilla as they come, and design wise, it’s overwhelmingly simple. For those with a deep appreciation of matte black and a love for software geared towards multimedia freaks, head on down to the read link for a video and photo gallery.

Uninspired Archos 10 netbook announced

Archos is totally getting in on the netbook game with the announcement of their own branded model (actually just a re-packaged Hasee MJ125), the Archos 10. This little 10.2-incher (with 1024 x 600 resolution) is going to pack a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, with a 3-cell battery, WiFi, and three USB ports — nothing to get too excited about, for sure, but we’ll wait with breath bated for word on pricing and availability.
