Archos 50 Platinum brings on company’s first smartphone hero

With the arrival of the Archos smartphone line, we’re seeing offerings that create one amazing value proposition after another, the hero of the lineup coming in as the Archos 50 Platinum, complete with a lovely 5.0-inch display. his device is both extremely thin and extremely affordable, bringing with it a $219.99 off-contract price point – that’s completely devoid of any additional monthly costs. This is the middle size device between the Archos 35 Carbon and the Archos 53 Platinum, the smallest coming in at a mere $99 USD!

With the Archos 50 Platinum you’re getting the Snapdragon S4 Play quad-core processor (8225Q) clocked at 1.2GHz along with 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal storage space. That internal storage space can be boosted with the device’s microSD card slot which you can pack with a microSD card up to 64GB in size. This device works with a rather interesting body coming in at 143.4 x 72.4 x 8.9mm and weighing just 160.2 g. The battery you’re getting under the hood is a cool 2000mAh and you’ll be connecting with 2G and 3G speeds. Though it should be expected that we’d not get every awesome specification ticked off of our “must have” list when we’ve got such a low cost on this phone, the lack of 4G might be the hardest to swallow.

Archos 35 Carbon $99 Android smartphone revealed

Today Archos has revealed a set of smartphones that begin on the low end with the “Archos 35 Carbon”, a $99 Vanilla Android handset you’ll absolutely have to take a peek at. This machine isn’t by any means meant to break the high-end market open with its specifications set, but at $99 USD, you might need to see how low you can go for an off-contract smartphone. It all begins with a lovely 3.5-inch 320×480 pixel IPS LCD display.

archos_35carbon_Triple_hidef_7

This device is tiny, but for $99 USD, one would expect it to be. The Archos 35 Carbon brings you GPS, Bluetooth, and FM radio connectivity. It also brings you Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – not exactly the most desirable build now that it’s been out-dated for nearly a year.

1-3-35carbon

You’ll be working with a single-core Qualcomm 7225A processor clocked at 1.0 Ghz while your RAM racks up to 512MB. You’ll have 4GB of internal storage space while you have the ability to add a 32GB microSD card in this device’s microSD card slot for memory expansion. This device also comes in at a cool 117 x 62.3 x 10.2 mm small – small enough to fit in the palm of your hand!

2-2-35carbon

This device works with dual-sim functionality so you can switch between carriers as you move through different parts of the country and the world. Though we don’t often see this feature appearing useful here in the USA, internationally such a perk will be well received!

Have a peek at the Archos tag portal for more information on the other Archos smartphones launching today – they only get bigger from here!

Archos dips into smartphones with the 35 Carbon, 50 Platinum and 53 Platinum

Archos dips into Android smartphones with the 35 Carbon, 50 Platinum and 53 Platnium

While Archos has long held dreams of expanding into smartphones, we’ve seen it run into its fair share of roadblocks along the way. Thanks in part to a sharpened corporate focus, that vision is at last becoming real with the company’s first, honest-to-goodness smartphone range. The 35 Carbon, 50 Platinum and 53 Platinum all cater to the budget, carrier-independent crowd with common foundations of unlocked 7.2Mbps HSPA 3G, dual SIM slots (only one being 3G) and stock Android. We also see a rather skimpy 4GB of storage, although a microSD slot on each phone helps make up for the difference.

What you’re mostly paying for is performance and screen size. The 35 Carbon ships with an HVGA 3.5-inch screen, a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon S1, 512MB of RAM, VGA cameras and Ice Cream Sandwich; move up to the 50 or 53 Platinum and you’ll get their respective 5- and 5.3-inch qHD screens, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Play, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera and Jelly Bean. No, we’re not bowled over by the performance any more than you are — but the respective contract-free prices of $100, $220 and $250 may have at least some trying Archos’ first effort, even if the company’s late May launch will only include Europe at first.

Archos ChildPad Tablet Arrives At The FCC

Archos ChildPad Tablet Arrives At The FCCYou know what they say about the little ones, they love nothing better than to follow us in our example. Dad and mom both have tablets each? Well, little Johnny wants one, too. The thing is, tablets are not something that are cheap to purchase for most families, and you do not simply replace a cracked screen just like that without taking quite a substantial hit to your bank account. Good thing there are companies out there who have designed child-friendly tablets at an affordable price too, and the Archos Childpad is one of them.

The Archos Childpad comes across as a kid-friendly tablet, where an 8” model is well on its way to keep the 7” Archos Childpad company, showing up at the hallways of the FCC earlier this week. The FCC documents failed to share any more details concerning the upcoming 8” Archos Childpad, apart from its name as well as back drawing, but it does seem most likely for this tablet to arrive with a 1024 x 768 pixel display, although a lower resolution would not be out of place, either, and there is a possibility of HDMI output thrown into the mix, too.

Arnova 97 G4 Tablet Arrives At The FCC

Arnova 97 G4 Tablet Arrives At The FCCHave you heard of Arnova tablets in the market before? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you would most probably also know that this is a range of affordable (read: low-cost) tablets from China that were manufactured with the permission of parent company Archos, before the collection of Arnova stamped tablets are then shipped over to the West for sale. So far, the Arnova label has already amassed dozens of different models as part of its family, and a fourth generation of Arnova tablets do seem to be well on their way.

In fact, it was just a few months ago when the Arnova 8 G4 arrived over at the FCC, and we are pleased to bring you word that an Arnova 97 G4 has followed the G4’s footsteps sometime this week. I guess one can make an educated guess based on the naming convention, that the Arnova 97 will feature a 9.7” display, where it runs on a 1.6GHz Rockchip RK3066 ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor, 8GB of internal memory, 1GB RAM, and will be accompanied by an 8,000mAh battery, a microSD memory card slot, a microUSB port, and mini HDMI output, in addition to two cameras – one in front, and the other at the back, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in tow.

GAME UK expands tablet sales to include iPads, more entry-level Android tablets

GAME UK to sell iPads, other tablets beyond the Nexus 7

UK retailer GAME has been hunting for ways to stay relevant during a shift to downloadable games — and now, that includes cribbing some style (just a little!) from Americans. Much like GameStop across the pond, GAME will soon sell a full range of tablets at 150 of its stores. The existing Nexus 7 offering will be joined by the seemingly obligatory 16GB iPad and iPad mini, although the rest of the lineup will be decidedly more frugal: options like the £100 Acer Iconia B1-A71 and £130 Archos GamePad will be bracketed by a raft of mostly DGM-built slates that dip as low as £60. It’s difficult to know how the expanded sales will help GAME’s bottom line, although the Nexus 7 reportedly fared well enough that it’s likely tablets are here to stay.
