Archos GamePad Now Available In U.S. For $179

We heard about Archos’ Android Jelly Bean-powered GamePad coming to the U.S. in February for $169, but as you could probably tell, it didn’t make its official debut last month. We’re not sure what exactly caused its delay to come to the U.S., but the Archos GamePad has just made itself available in the U.S. starting today.

The Archos GamePad will come with Android 4.1, a 7-inch display capable of a 1024 x 600 resolution, a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, a Mali-400 MP GPU, 8GB of internal flash storage, 1GB of RAM and, of course, physical buttons. The button layout on the Archos GamePad reminds us of the the original PSP as its thumbsticks look to be that same quality. (more…)

Archos GamePad now available in the US for $179

The Archos GamePad goes all the way back to early December, when the gaming tablet released in Europe, leaving those in the US still yearning for a gaming-specific tablet with physical tactile buttons. However, after seeing a bit of a delay, the tablet is now finally available in the US for just $179.

Archos showcased their new GamePad gaming tablet at CES last week, and we even got our hands on the new device during the show, but now anyone can get their hands on it. Previously, the company announced that the tablet would be arriving in February at $169, but the tablet was apparently delayed and the price went up $10.

What’s so unique about this piece of machinery is its 14 physical buttons that are split up on the sides, and there’s even dual analog thumbsticks, as well as an exclusive button-mapping tool that allows users to play Android games without relying on on-screen controls. The GamePad comes with a 7-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1024×600, which isn’t too impressive, but shouldn’t be a big deal if you’re not gung-ho about pixel density.

Under the hood there’s a 1.6GHz dual-core processor accompanied by a quad-core Mali-400 MP4 graphics chip. The tablet also has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage capacity, but the device comes with a built-in microSD card slot that can be used to add up to 32GB of extra storage space. The tablet is available now on Amazon, but we expect it to hit other online retailers shortly.

Archos GamePad arrives in the States for $179

Archos GamePad arrives in the States for around $180

Tired of waiting for the WikiPad? Needing some immediate gratification for your thumbs? Willing to consider Archos to fill that void? If your answer to all three was a mighty, “Aye!” then you’ll be glad to know that the Archos GamePad is now for sale in the US at various online retailers. The portable gaming system combines Android 4.1, a 7-inch 1,024 x 600 screen and honest-to-goodness physical buttons, all within a 0.3-inch thick enclosure that’s priced between $179 and $189. The GamePad sports a 1.6GHz dual-core CPU and a Mali-400 MP GPU, and while it may lack the cachet of the WikiPad, it has the distinct advantage of being available now. And you know what? Sometimes, that’s all that matters.

[Thanks, Duncan]

Archos FamilyPad 2 Announced

Archos FamilyPad 2 AnnouncedYou know that times are hard when you no longer hold a press conference and make an official announcement at a physical venue, but instead, prefer to fall back on the virtual hallways of Facebook. Yup, that is what French company Archos did with the Archos FamilyPad 2, where it intends to continue from where the original FamilyPad left off after that was introduced just in November last year, having hit the market in December.

Hmmm, slightly more than three months after a device is released only to have a “sequel” appear? Either Archos must have stumbled on something so good it cannot wait to come out, or, you get the picture on where I am going with this. The Archos FamilyPad 2 will be a 13.3” tablet that has a 1,280 × 800 resolution, where it will run on a dual-core 1.6GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with quad-core graphics, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory that can be augmented via a microSD memory card slot, a couple of 2-megapixel cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board.

The Archos FamilyPad 2 has been touted to arrive in Europe “very soon” for €299 a pop, and so far, we do not think that it has any “natural” competitors at that price point.

Archos expands tablet horizons with Platinum series

French portable media player, smartphone and tablet manufacturer Archos intends to expand their horizons where the tablet market is concerned, with three new additions to the Archos Platinum tablet range. You will find that Archos did not skimp on the hardware this time around with all three tablets, considering how they carry the Platinum name, they ought to live up to a certain level of reputation as well.

The entire Platinum range from Archos will share a High-Definition IPS display with capacitive multi-touch screen to keep it abreast with the latest developments among other manufacturers, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with an 8-core GPU that ought to make it more than capable of handling 1080p video decoding without batting an eyelid, 2GB RAM, full access to all 700,000 plus applications on the Google Play store, Archos Media Center applications to keep you and the family occupied, front and back cameras, mini-HDMI and a microSD memory card slot, with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice.

The Archos 80 Platinum will come in an 8” tablet form factor, boasting a 1024×768 resolution IPS screen, and should be out already for $199 a pop. As for the Archos 97 Platinum HD, this will be a larger tablet with a 9.7” display at a stunning 2048×1536 resolution, and will be comparable to the Retina display found in the iPad, although it clearly comes out the victor where pricing details are concerned. Out this month as well, the Platinum 97 HD will retail for $299.

Last but not least would be the largest model of the lot, the Archos 116 Platinum, which is an 11.6” tablet that boasts of a Full HD, 1920 × 1080 resolution IPS display, which is quite unlike anything currently on the market. The Archos 116 Platinum will be the late bloomer here, arriving only this coming April for $349 a pop.

Archos 116 Platinum tablet joins CES lineup with 11.6-inch IPS screen for $349

Archos 116 Platinum tablet joins CES lineup with 116inch 1080p IPS screen for $349

How do you build a powerful, attractive 11.6-inch tablet that retails for $349? Well, you cut some corners when it comes to build quality, as we discovered when handling Archos’ 8 and 9.7-inch Platinum models last month at CES. The company’s latest slab features an identical quad-core 1.2GHz processor, eight-core GPU, 2 gigs of RAM, Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), front and rear cameras, along with microSD and HDMI connectivity. The 116 Platinum, however, packs a larger 11.6-inch, 1920×1080-pixel widescreen IPS display, boosting the price tag to $349, compared to $299 for the 9.7-inch model and $199 for the 8 incher. Archos has promised some hands-on time at CeBIT next month in Germany, but you can get a fairly solid idea of how it’ll look and feel by checking out the smaller Platinums in our CES vid after the break.

Archos unveils new Platinum line of tablets with high-res display and quad-core CPU

Archos may not be a main competitor in the tablet marketplace, but they’re doing whatever they can to become more relevant. Case in point: the company just outed three new tablets, all of which come with Retina-quality, high-resolution IPS displays and quad-core processors. The tablets come in 8-inch, 9.7-inch, and 11.6-inch flavors.

archos-platinum

Archos is calling these tablets the Platinum line, and the company says that they “are amongst the first Android tablets to offer a super high resolution IPS screen combined with the performance of a Quad-Core CPU.” The tablets come with a 1.2 GHz quad-core chip, 2GB of RAM, front and rear cameras, microSD card slot, HDMI-out, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to run the show.

However, not all three of these tablets quite match the pixel density of the full-size iPad. The 8-inch Platinum rocks a 1024×768 resolution, the 11.6-inch model has a 1920×1080 resolution, and the 9.7-inch variant has 2048×1536 resolution, which is right on par with the iPad’s own Retina display — no more, no less.

Of course, this isn’t the first high-resolution tablet that Archos has put together. Back in December, the company outed the 97 Titanium HD, which comes with a 9.7-inch screen with a 2048×1536 resolution. However, that model only had a measly dual-core on the inside, while the new Platinum slates are rocking quad-core chips.

The Archos 80 Platinum will begin shipping later this month for $199, while the 97 Platinum HD will be available around the same time for $299. The larger 116 Platinum will begin shipping in April at a cost $349. These tablets are definitely less expensive than competing tablets, so it’ll be interesting to see how they hold up against the competition.

Archos To Enter Android Smartphone Market?

Archos To Enter Android Smartphone Market?Archos of France has rolled out its fair share of Android-powered tablets and portable media players in the past, with the Archos Platinum tablet range being the most recent one – but smartphones? Well, word on the street has it that they are not too far away from Android smartphones, where French blogger Pierre Lecourt cites sources of his that Archos will be rolling out a trio of different smartphones in due time, where they will come in 3.5-inch, 4.8-inch, and 5.2-inch displays.

The Archos Carbon 35 is touted to be the smallest model with a modest 480 x 320 pixel display, a single core processor and a paltry 512MB RAM as well as an equal amount of storage. Needless to say, this is clearly a budget handset that ought to retail for approximately 90 Euros. As for the Archos 48 Platinum, this higher end handset sports a 4.8-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, a quad-core 1.7GHz Mediatek MT6589 ARM Cortex-A7 processor and a 249 Euro price tag. Last but not least, the Archos 52 Titanium might feature the most generous display at 4.8-inches, but it has a relatively low pixel count at 800 x 480 pixels, alongside a dual-core 1.2GHz processor.

Archos Platinum Range IntroducedArchos has jumped aboard the tablet bandwagon with their latest release, the Platinum tablet range that prides itself in being one of the first few Android-powered tablets in the market that delivers a super high resolution IPS display alongside a quad-core processor, alongside Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice. The three tablets will come in 8-inch, 9.7-inch and 11.6-inch configurations, where all of them deliver true vivid colors, sharper text and amazingly fast performance.

Shared features in the Platinum range include a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, an 8-core GPU with 1080p video decoding capability, 2GB RAM, full access to the 700,000 applications on Google Play, Archos Media Center applications, two cameras (one in front and another at the back), mini-HDMI and a microSD memory card slot. The Archos 80 Platinum will arrive this month for $199 a pop, while the Archos 97 Platinum HD will be more expensive at $299, offering a stunning 2048×1536 resolution IPS screen that will surely rival the Retina display iPad, and the $349 Archos 116 Platinum boasting of a 1920×1080 resolution IPS display.
