LG licenses ARM Cortex-A15 and Mali-T604 graphics, starts scheming up mobile processors of its own

Some of LG’s brightest attractions at the moment are the dual-core Optimus 2X and Optimus 3D smartphones and similarly equipped Optimus Pad tablet. The only problem with them? Those multicore chips are produced by NVIDIA for the 2X and Pad and Texas Instruments for the Optimus 3D, leaving LG a clear step behind its arch-nemesis Samsung who is producing its own dual-core system-on-chip. So what else could LG possibly do but buy its own ARM license — specifically for the Cortex-A9 design that is dominating today and the Cortex-A15 with Mali-T604 graphics that promises to rule the mobile world from 2012 onwards — and start churning out its own processors? The Korean company certainly has the budget, if not the manufacturing facilities, to produce such chips at volume, and we’re all for seeing another competitor enter the ARM arena. This licensing deal also reminds us that the last fresh licensee to ARM’s blueprints was Microsoft — so we can now look forward to two industry giants bringing their technical expertise to this rapidly growing marketplace. Intel Aiming for Android Tablets This Year

Intel’s x86 chipset is coming to Android tablets. Soon.

So says Intel CEO Paul Otellini. In the company’s first-quarter earnings report on Tuesday, Otellini announced that Intel had received the source code for Android version 3.0 (Honeycomb) for tablets from Google, and the company is working on porting the operating system over to the x86 architecture.

Intel “expects to be able to ramp those [Android tablet] machines over the course of this year for a number of customers,” Otellini said on a conference call with reporters. And in a separate interview with Forbes, Otellini said we may see those Intel-based tablets as early as May.

While Intel’s chips have dominated the desktop and notebook industry, the company has not had so much luck with mobile devices. Instead, ARM architecture predominates among smartphones and tablets, through ARM-based chips made by various companies including Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and, most recently, Nvidia.

Part of what has kept Intel’s processors from making gains in the mobile market may be the same thing that makes it so strong in the desktop and server areas.

“The big issue is power consumption,” Richard Fichera, a semiconductor analyst from Forrester Research, told Wired.com in an interview. “ARM was designed from the beginning to be low-power consumption, while Intel’s x86 came from a whole different design perspective.”

Intel, however, has taken strides in reducing power consumption with its Atom series of processors: the 2009 Atom debut found power reduced by 20 percent from the previous generation of processors.

“Intel has radically improved their performance per watt on their server and desktop chips,” Fichera said, “but this is a threshold they need to break past to move this architecture into mobile devices.”

Last week, Intel debuted its “Oak Trail” series of Atom processors — the latest in the company’s series of low-consumption chips — though some say they don’t measure up to ARM offerings.

“Intel’s core strengths are building advanced manufacturing processes and optimizing processor architectures,” wrote Romit Shah, an analyst with Nomura Equity Research. “That said, we believe the x86 architecture is not competitive versus ARM in low power applications such as mobile handsets and tablets.”

Intel’s low-consumption Atom chips are currently implemented in notebooks, not smartphones or tablets.

Otellini also signaled Intel’s move into the smartphone space should be expected in the future. “I would be very disappointed if we didn’t see Intel-based phones for sale 12 months from now,” he said.

Some of these mobile moves has been hinted at before by Intel, with little to show for it. Last July, Intel CTO Justin Rattner told Wired.com that January of 2011 “would clearly be the window of opportunity” for the company to bring its processors to mobile devices. January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas — the premier annual event for electronics industry debuts — came and went, with no sign of Intel’s processors in smartphones or tablets premiered at the show. Many of the devices introduced are using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, which is based on the ARM version seven instruction set.

“We’re not a strong player in phones yet, but we will be,” Otellini told Forbes. “We were able to bring volume economics and technology to [PC markets], and you’ll see us do the same here…drive the power down, drive performance up, drive costs down, in typical Intel fashion—boom, boom, boom.”


ARM predicts dual-core Cortex-A15 devices in late 2012, quad-core variants ‘later on’

Smartphones and tablets, the two hottest categories of consumer devices right now, are dominated by ARM processor designs, so when the company speaks up about its product roadmap, we’re inclined to listen in close. The next generation of ARM system-on-chip has been dubbed Cortex-A15 and was expected to ship in 2013, but that’s now been accelerated slightly to late 2012, which is when we’re told to expect actual devices on sale with A15 silicon on board. Single- and dual-core variants will get us started, before quad-core options start filtering through in 2013. ARM promises a stunning fivefold improvement in performance over current Cortex-A9 SOCs and already has NVIDIA, Samsung, ST-Ericsson, and Texas Instruments signed up as licensees for that new hotness. So now even Samsung’s “desktop-class” 2GHz dual-core chip that’s slated for 2012 has a reason to look over its shoulder. Happy times!

Update: Wonder what kind of ARM chip that might be? NVIDIA just tweeted that it’s actually a Tegra 2 SOC.

HTC Desire solves dodecahedron Rubik’s Cube, will blow your mind (video)

If this image doesn’t have you completely dumbfounded, scroll down and watch the video. Sufficiently awestruck? Good. Now, for a little background on exactly how someone got a pile of Legos and a smartphone to solve the devil’s puzzle Megaminx. The aptly titled Megaminxer enlists the Mindstorms NXT kit to do the dirty work and an HTC Desire, running a custom Android app, as the brains of the operation. Said app uses the phone’s camera to take individual images of each of the puzzle’s 12 faces, then processes the information and sends a signal via Bluetooth to the NXT controller, which in turn goes to town. Unfortunately, there’s no explaining how they got the Android to dance like that, but, really, why ruin the magic?

AMO Arm pneumatic prosthetic does mind-control on the cheap

We’re no strangers to amputees moving stuff with their minds — for that matter, a thought-controlled prosthetic isn’t really new to us, either — but the pneumatic arm you see here isn’t like other intelligent limbs. Unlike most mind-operated prosthesis, the Artificial Muscle-Operated (AMO) Arm doesn’t require invasive surgery, and according to its inventors, it costs a quarter of the price to make. Here’s how the thing works: the host human wears a headset that sends brain signals to a chip in the arm that then matches those signals to a database of related actions, triggering a series of pneumatic pumps and valves to move the limb. Thus, if the wearer thinks ‘up,’ the arm moves up. The AMO Arm’s creators, a pair of undergraduate biomed students, say that not only is their invention a steal to produce, but it also takes just minutes to acclimate to, which has us wondering, do you have to be missing an arm to get a hold of one of these things? It’s perhaps a little too early to be feeling all retro-nostalgic for the netbook, with much of the industry moving on up to your notbooks and your tablets and such, so we’ll just say that Hercules is still kickin’ it old school by launching its eCAFE netbooks. There are two models, the Slim HD and EX HD, the former tipping the scales at 1.9lbs and measuring only .8-inches thick, while the EX model is a bit heftier at 2.5lbs and 1.1-inches, managing 13 hours of “real use” battery life. Both are said to smoothly play 720p video on their 10-inch, 1024 x 600 displays or export it over HDMI, running a custom flavor of Linux and powered by an ARM Cortex-A8 processor. Hercules says this “sets a new standard” in netbooks, but 8 or 16GB of flash storage and 512MB of RAM sounds all too familiar to us, and if that cramped, recessed keyboard is the future we’re quite happy to stick in the present, thanks.

x-Ar exoskeleton arm keeps repetitive tasks from doing you harm (video)

The spring-loaded technology behind the Steadicam has just found another use — the x-Ar exoskeleton arm, which attaches to your wrists to reduce or eliminate the feeling of weight. Just unveiled at the Applied Ergonomics Conference in Florida this week, the mechanism mounts to a chair or other stable object and loosely cuffs your arms, allowing for a fairly extraordinary range of motion while bearing “the weight of your arm and small objects.” (Sledgehammer-wielding workers will probably be better served by one of these.) While manufacturer Equipois suggests that the arm will likely see use in factories, assembly lines and the like where workers are subject to repetitive stress, we can also think of a few bloggers who wouldn’t mind taking a little strain off their wrists. Sneak peek at Archos Gen 9 tablets: 1.6 GHz dual-core A9 processor, 250GB HDD for €400 in June

Word on the street was Archos planned to give us a couple of new tablets at IFA this year, but it turns out the upscale Gen 9 hardware is coming a couple months prior to the September trade show. The new Honeycomb slates are set for a June 2011 release and pack a 1.6GHz ARM A9 dual-core chip (the prospect of which should get you spec-heads drooling), up to a 250GB HDD / 32GB SSD, and a patent-pending “disruptive 3G modem” — all for €400 (about $566). Archos’ fiendish plan is to steal some of the iPad 2’s thunder with its speedy processor and competitive price, but history tells us it’ll need more than “competitive” to truly yank any marketshare. Too bad the post-PC world can’t be bothered to care, right Steve?

Kinect hack turns Arduino-controlled delta robot into aggressive claw crane (video)

Candy crane, teddy picker, claw machine, whatever you call it, this arcade mainstay was robbing children of their golden tokens long before we slid into our first pair of Hammer pants, but despite the changing face of the plush offerings within, the crane game’s remained mostly the same. Now a team of students at the Bartlett School of Architecture have produced a Kinect hack that could change the way you drop that claw. The rather temperamental delta robot enlists the ever-hackable peripheral in combination with Processing and Arduino to mimic the movements of a user’s arm. As you can tell by the video below, the delta hasn’t quite figured out the subtleties of human gestures, but the robot’s creators say they intend to implement “several autonomous behaviors” once all the kinks are worked out. Frankly, we’d pay our weight in tokens to see the crane game bite back at an unsuspecting whippersnapper. Video after the break.
