That’s Much Better: Star Wars Invades Thomas Kinkade Paintings

I never cared much for the late Thomas Kinkade’s paintings. To me they just seemed boring and a little too pretty. Well, whether you like his work or not, I think we can all agree that adding Star Wars into them makes them much better.

These images were embellished by artist Jeff Bennett. Jeff has added imagery from the Star Wars universe into Kinkade’s idyllic and peaceful settings and now they are wayyyy more amazing and interesting. I would actually buy and hang these in my home.

Now there are stormtroopers, a Rancor, star destroyers and more in Kinkade’s art.

It’s as if the Empire has invaded a quiet Christmas village and turned it into an Imperial base.

Shooting Challenge: Día de Muertos

Shooting Challenge: Día de Muertos

We’re all going to die one day. And no holiday celebrates our fragile mortality with as much gusto as Día de Muertos (Nov 1st-Nov 2nd), when Mexico (and increasingly, the world) remembers friends and family with alters, marigolds, poetry, food, and of course, skulls.

A History of the Apple Mouse Created Exclusively With CSS

A History of the Apple Mouse Created Exclusively With CSS

The most impressive thing about Josh Bader’s website that documents the history of the Apple Mouse isn’t how comprehensive it is. After all, you can count the number of major hardware revisions Apple’s made to its mouse since 1983 on two hands. No, what makes Bader’s site particularly wonderful is that all the illustrations have been painstaking created using nothing but HTML CSS.

What Happens When Two Computers Play Rock Paper Scissors?

Nothing. If nothing meant becoming lulled into hypnosis as two machines battle each other out in a human game that can be interpreted through specific algorithms. If nothing meant secretly betting on which computer is superior. If nothing meant enjoying the beats and pulses of anticipation as each screen throws out its pick. If nothing meant I could waste hours watching these two go virtual hand to hand with each other.

Real Life Instagram: Life Imitating App

Last year we saw a concept for a pair of glasses that applies Instagram’s filters through its lenses. Bruno Ribeiro took a more literal approach with his Real Life Instagram series, taking not just Instagram’s filters but its entire interface into the real world.

But the thing that makes Real Life Instagram so effective is its acknowledgement of the app users’ tastes. Bruno frames random objects – oftentimes just portions of them – with his cardboard interface, pre-liked and pre-hashtagged.

Instagramception. Ah, the failure of freedom. When you give everyone the ability to express themselves, you’ll quickly realize that most of us don’t have anything worthwhile to say. But I’d still take that over silence any day.

Spray-on Starpath Makes Roads Glow Like the Starry Night Sky at Night

No, you’re not dreaming. The pavement is actually twinkling like the stars in the sky, and it’s all thanks to Starpath. It’s a spray-on paint that transforms regular pathways into glow-in-the-dark ones.

Aside from the novel aspect of it, Starpath might also some day serve as a low-cost alternate means for outdoor lighting.  Starpath can be sprayed onto a variety of surfaces, like concrete, tarmac, and wood. It absorbs UV energy during the day and releases this energy by “lighting up” at night.

The technology behind it was developed by UK-based company Pro-Teq Surfacing. Hamish Scott, owner of Pro-Teq, explains: “This product adjusts to the natural light, so if it is pitch black outside the luminous natural earth enhances, and if the sky is lighter, it won’t release as much luminosity. It adjusts accordingly, its almost like it has a mind of its own. Further, the surface is environmentally-friendly and aesthetically pleasing.”

Starpath is currently being tested on the footpath in Christ’s Pieces, which is a well-known park in Cambridge, England.
