Cygnett ICON cases customized by TATS CRU in person at CES 2013

This week at Digital Experience (during CES 2013) we caught up with the case makers at Cygnett where they had none other than the world famous TATS CRU joining the fun for fully unique customized iPhone 5 ICON cases. The TATS CRU is a set of mural street artists that’ve been using their graffiti style since the 1980′s with explosive results. This customizable case here has been customized not once, but twice, by the TATS CRU for none other than SlashGear – have a look!

What we’ve got here is one of Cygnett’s most well-received cases, made to clip on to your iPhone 5 extremely simply with a single move and protect from top to bottom. At the same time you’ve got the giant space on the bulk of the back of the iPhone where any number of images can blast forth. In this case it’s the TATS CRU’s creations made right on the spot here in Las Vegas.

This Is Not a Painting

It looks like brushstrokes – it could almost be a Turner – but this is actually nature at its most dramatic. This snapshot from the European Space Agency’s MERIS satellite shows the Tibesti mountains that straddle northern Chad and southern Libya – though a picture like this makes it easy to forget that borders exist. Mixed up Mickey Mouse

Who’s the leader of the club that’s made for you and me? M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E! But did you know that when Mickey Mouse isn’t leading the Mouseketeers, he’s going through life masquerading as other animated characters? At least that’s what I’ve been led to believe by these amusing Mickey mashups by artist Nicholas “Harshness” Hyde.

The series envisions Mickey assuming the form of other iconic characters, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Papa Smurf, Snoopy, Bugs Bunny and Garfield the cat. My personal fave is Pikachu, so that’s why he got the big hero image above.

They’re available as prints from Harshness’ Etsy shop, though they’re a little tricky to find – but it’s not like there aren’t plenty of other cool designs to keep you occupied over there while you poke around.

Waterbed Pavement: I Feel the Earth Move Under My Feet

A couple of months ago, we saw people bouncing along to their destinations thanks to design firm Salto’s Fast Track trampoline installation. Pathways are once again getting a redesign, this time of the watery kind, with artist collective Raum’s waterbed-like pavement.

Sidewalk Waterbed

The pavement, which was installed in Bourges, France a couple of years back, was created in collaboration with the National Art School of Bourges and FRAC Centre. What they did was install a huge pad filled with liquid underneath the bricks to turn that stretch of pavement into a moving waterbed.

The project is called ‘La Ville Molle’ (‘The Soft City’) and while it’s a completely fun concept, it was created with a very serious message. The project was meant to question the ‘hardness of the city and its ability to change’, which I think is a pretty common problem that many cities all over the world face. While replacing sidewalks with waterbeds probably won’t solve that problem, at least it might make you think about it, and lighten up for a few minutes.

This Trippy Animation Is Nothing But Coffee, White-Out, and Ink

Hand-drawn ink and paper animation is a technology that’s been around for quite some time, and on the whole, most people might even consider it completely out-dated. Animator Jake Fried took the opprotunity to spice it up a little bit with “The Deep End” by adding coffee and white-out to the mix, but only using one [filthy] sheet of paper. On top of the neat process, it’s one hell of a trip. Hold on tight. [Boing Boing] More »

This Electrified Brain Is Made of Thousands and Thousands of Drops of Solder

The brain is all about connections. Little jolts of electricity jumping from between thousands of interconnected neurons to send a message. It’s a crazy house up there. This brain is sort of the same way, made with hardly anything but thousands of drops of solder—metal neurons, if you will—and coursing with the energy to light up an LED. Sure, that’s not quite the same as thinking, but it’s still pretty cool. More »

Justice League of America Defaced Bills: in Good We Trust

In the comics, the bad guys are always pretty obvious. In the real world, they look just like you and I. In the real world they run banks and pull scams on Wall Street. They work in our government. They get rich at the expense of others as they grow fat and laugh, while people starve on the street. Their name is greed and they are the vilest form of scum and villainy you will find. We need the Justice League to save our economy!

The team is on it thanks to artist Aslan Malik from Berlin, Germany. He put these cool ‘legal’ notes together to fight economic injustice in the world. There is Hamilton as Batman, Jackson as Wonder Woman, Ben Franklin as the Green Lantern, Lincoln as the Flash and Ulysses S. Grant as Superman.

He did a great job on these. If real money was this cool, people would still be spending cash instead of using their debit cards.

This Is a Naked Woman

Shinichi Maruyama, a NYC-based Japanese artist, has long studied the interactions between motion and time. However, for his most recent set, Maruyama has traded in his water sculptures for a nude dancer, though you’d never know if from the results. More »

Space Invaders Invade Snowy Mountainside

What are crop circles trying to tell us? I have no idea, but I know that this HUGE Space Invaders art that takes up a whole mountainside can only mean one thing. The aliens are finally invading. And this is likely a signal for their human collaborators.

Remember when you used to make words or shapes in the snow by stamping your boot tracks or lying in the snow? Well, you never created anything halfway as cool as this. Sorry. This just blows your stupid snow angels away. Simon Beck is a snow art boot tracking pro. I mean that pro part. This guy walked and walked and walked, creating each little pattern piece until he created these incredible gigantic Space Invaders on the side of a mountain.

What the hell did you do today? Did you make aliens on the side of a mountain? With your feet? That aliens can see from space?
