See-Through Public Toilet Lets You Do a Number Two While the Rest of the World Passes You By

Having to take a dump in public is the subject of many people’s nightmares. And that nightmare is about to become a reality if you suddenly have the urge to go and the closest toilet you can find is Monica Bonvicini’s public toilet-slash-art installation called ‘Don’t Miss A Sec.’

That title’s certainly appropriate, since the toilet is located right on the sidewalk. And with its one-way mirrors, you can see whatever is happening or whoever happens to be walking by while you do your thing, while nobody outside can see in. At least I hope not.

Saw your girlfriend pass by while you’re inside? “Hey, I just saw you while I was…” Or maybe you witnessed a robbery while you were finishing up? “Yes, Officer, I was right inside when the whole thing happened. Look, I even capture the whole thing on my phone. Oh, sorry, you weren’t supposed to see that, I was just about to flush…”

You won’t miss a sec, all right, but I’m sure you’ll have the hardest time going when you’re in this bathroom.

‘Chicks in Hats’ Shows Off a Multitude of Chicken Personalities, in Hats

Don’t expect a gallery of human chicks in hats, because this post is going to be about actual chicks in hats. You know, baby chickens.

Chicks in Hats2If you’ve seen chicks in real life before, then you know how hard it is to get them to stay put. Which is why I think Julie Persons did a fantastic job capturing them in all sorts of poses with wacky hats on their heads in her new photo series, ‘Chicks in Hats.’

Check out the gallery for more awesome shots of the chicks.

Spock + Soccer = Spocker?

While much of the world knows the game with a round black and white ball as “football,” here in the U.S., we call the game “soccer.” So this picture of multiple Spocks dressed up in soccer uniforms probably only makes sense here, in Canada and maybe Australia. Er, actually, it doesn’t make sense at all.

spock socker

But that doesn’t mean the image doesn’t make me giggle like a little schoolgirl. There’s just something so silly about this image by artist Tommervik that I want to make it the wallpaper on my computer now.

But if your ambitions are greater than desktop wallpaper, you can pick up an 11×14 canvas print of this goofy image over on Etsy for $140(USD). It’ll look great alongside that Mona Lisa you picked up a couple of years back.

Sensory Maps Show Locations Along with Their Sights, Smells, and Sounds

Traditionally, maps were made to help people find their way around a city that they might be visiting for the first time. However, Kate McLean took the basic concept of the map and spun it around to come up with an all-new series that have made the jump from being reference materials to art: the Sensory Maps.

sensory map newportInstead of telling you where certain streets or landmarks are located, Kate’s sensory maps will instead let you know what it would feel like if you were actually there. How? By letting you smell its scents, taste the surrounding atmosphere, feel whatever might be there, and hear the sounds in that location.

Of course, it would be impossible to let you experience all these senses through a map – but that’s what your imagination is for, right?

To construct some of the maps, Kate invited people to go to her studio and smell bottles with scents in them. She then had them recall what that scent remind them of and write down the place or feeling that they associated with the smell.

That’s a lot of work, considering that this is just for one of the senses that Kate’s trying to capture in her work.

Visualized 50 shades of Nexus

ASUS is never shy at showing off its creative side. At Taiwan Designers’ Week last Sunday, we spotted the company’s above art installation dubbed “Palette”: a mesmerizing circle of 50 overlapping Nexus 7 back covers, each in its very own shade of color. Interestingly, all of these were actually used in the development process of Google’s Nexus 7, which just goes to show the kind of mad dedication ASUS had put into the joint project.

But wait, there’s more! To match the event’s “Flow” theme this year, ASUS decided to also show off parts of the design process that determined the final appearance of its other hero products — hence the title “Becoming” for the booth’s own theme. For instance, much like what the company’s lovely Michelle Hsiao showed us on the Engadget Show, the booth again featured a handful of tablet chassis parts and dummies (mainly of PadFone, Zenbook, Transformer Prime and a 7-inch device) at different stages of their development, complemented by a generous selection of colors and finishes. Only this time the designers used some of them to create gradient wall art that we wouldn’t mind having at home. Check them out after the break.

These Incredible/Gross Photos Were Printed With E. Coli Bacteria [Video]

These woozy prints of the famous faces of Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin were created using a modified photo printing process invented by artist Zachary Copfer. Rather than use traditional light-sensitive photo emulsion to print photos, he instead used a special genetically altered E coli. It’s gross to think about, but oh so beautiful to look at. More »

GPS Shoes: Ruby Slippers 2.0

These shoes won’t take you home when you click its heels, but it will help you get there. Made by British artist Dominic Wilcox, the No Place Like Home shoes points the wearer to the right way via the magic of GPS.

According to Inhabitat, there’s a GPS receiver on the heel of the left shoe that can be used to punch in an address, although they didn’t mention exactly how that’s done. Once it knows where you want to go, LEDs on the left shoe indicate the direction to take, while a line of LEDs on the right shoe provides a rough estimate of proximity to the destination.

The shoes are part of Wilcox’ solo show Variations on Normal at the KK Outlet. It would’ve been awesome if he made them with roller skates.
