Huawei puts Ascend P1 on sale in the US through Amazon for $450

Huawei Ascend P1 review lead

We’ve grown accustomed to the Huawei Ascend P1 ourselves, but most Americans haven’t had that same luxury without going through an importer. Huawei wants to be more accommodating, if somewhat belatedly: it’s now selling its mid-tier phone directly to the US through Amazon. Shelling out $450 gets the same 4.3-inch screen, dual-core 1.5GHz processor and lightly customized Android 4.0 as elsewhere, but in an unlocked form with a proper US warranty. The only real disappointment is that it’s not the LTE variant, although we’ll bite when there’s HSPA+ 3G for American GSM carriers like AT&T, Straight Talk and T-Mobile. If you’re willing to make the sacrifice for carrier independence, the Ascend P1 awaits at the source link.

How would you change the Huawei Ascend P1?

How would you change the Huawei Ascend P1

2012 was the year Huawei stepped out of the OEM shadows and make a “name” for itself. That hasn’t been the smoothest process, but political wrangling aside, what about the phones themselves? Huawei’s Ascend P1 has a slender body (and a chubby camera module), marred by a flimsy plastic shell and 4GB of on-board storage. However, it more than made up for its failings in the performance stakes, but what did you think about it? Did you buy one, and if so, what would you change?

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE named as EE exclusive in UK, other markets to follow

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE named as EE exclusive in UK, other markets to follow

If you’d wondered what Huawei might bring to the table for the launch of the UK’s newly-minted 4G network, your time is up, as the Ascend P1 LTE has been revealed as a national exclusive for EE, with availability in other markets to follow. Like its forebear, the handset features Android 4.0 alongside a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display and an 8-megapixel camera, although as a nice surprise, it’ll also come with a beefier 2,000mAh battery. There’s no word yet on pricing for the latest entrant, although it seems a safe assumption that all will be revealed in rather short order. In the meantime, you’ll find the remaining details in the PR after the break.

Huawei’s Ascend P1 makes its way to the UK, Canada

Huawei's Ascend P1 makes its way to the UK

Huawei’s Ascend P1 is making its way to the UK (and Canada) just in time for the country’s belated summer. The 7.7mm (with a hump) dual-core handset packs a 4.3-inch qHD display and the same CPU as the Galaxy Nexus — so while it won’t catch the One X napping, it’s no slouch either. It looks like the company had an eye on gazumping budget rival ZTE, which unveiled its Grand X yesterday, undercutting it by a solitary pound. It’s arriving on Wind from today, free with a $49 contract and Vodafone in August, free on plans costing £26 or more a month.
