LinkedIn lands on Nokia Asha touch phones, lets S40 users network like a boss

Considering how popular Nokia’s Series 40 handsets are worldwide, it should come as no surprise that the platform is finally getting a dedicated LinkedIn client. The app, which is available on the Nokia Store for free, is designed specifically for Series 40 touch phones like the sexy new Asha 501 (it also supports the Asha 305, 306, 308, 309, 310 and 311). Existing users can update their LinkedIn stream, manage their inbox, search their network and check their profile, while new users can sign up right from the login screen. LinkedIn for Series 40 comes hot on the heels of last month’s Foursquare client and joins the existing Symbian and Windows Phone apps. Check the source links below for more info.

Nokia’s Here Maps service comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

DNP Nokia's Here Maps comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

The touchscreen Asha 501 Nokia unveiled back in May will now work with Here Maps, the company announced on its blog today. The navigation service is already available on Windows Phone 8, Firefox OS, Android and iOS, and its arrival on the Asha platform will boost that operating system’s more modest selection of apps. Available now as a beta release, Here Maps for the Asha 501 offers turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic information. It’s designed specifically for low-end smartphones without GPS on board, and Nokia’s post notes that the current version “is a starting point and we will improve the experience over time.” Upcoming changes will likely include improved satellite images, which the company says will soon be updated to a higher quality. Asha 501 users in select countries can nab the Here Maps beta via the source link below.

Nokia Asha 501 announced

Finnish phone manufacturer has yet another device released, but this time around, it will not be on the high end side of things considering how it will not run on the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system. In fact, this will be a feature phone, but does that mean the new Nokia Asha 501 does not deserve any kind of news coverage? That would be anathema to me – at least, as Nokia intends to position the Nokia Asha 501 to break down plenty of barriers and smash people’s expectations of just how much ‘smartphone’ that their hard earned money is able to buy.

First of all, let us get this out of the way – the Nokia Asha 501 might not be a smartphone, but this does not mean that folks who pick one up are going to lose out on touchscreen goodness. No sir, you will find the Nokia Asha 501 capable of delivering the full touchscreen experience, complete with social networks, content sharing and connectivity that has been deeply integrated into a wonderful, responsive and revamped operating system.

It will be compatible with the GSM 900/1800 + WLAN and GSM 850/1900 + WLAN bands, falling back on the Nokia Asha platform user interface, but this will not come with a dual SIM slot. There is a 3” QVGA TFT capacitive display to get things going with your fingers, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and I am quite sure the 128MB of internal memory is far from sufficient in this day and age – which is why the engineers over at Nokia has decided to throw in a memory card slot that is expandable up to 32GB, if you get the right MMC card, of course. Other connectivity options include Micro USB, a 3.5mm AV jack, and a 2mm charger connector.

The Asha 501 will come in bright red, bright green, cyan, yellow, white and black colors, where each purchase will be accompanied by a pair of red headphones right out of the box. It costs $99 a pop from Q2 onwards.

Nokia Asha 501 Goes Official

We had earlier reported that thanks to a leaked photo, it was suggested that the Nokia Asha 501 could be announced today, and sure enough Nokia has taken to their official blog to announce the device. As expected, the Asha 501 is part of Nokia’s non-Windows Phone lineup and like the previous Asha models and other Nokia models, the Asha 501 is available in a variety of bright colors and according to Nokia, the phone will feature a new user interface in which Nokia has referred to as “Fastlane”, which essentially lets the user swipe between screens to access the different menus within the phone itself, or in the apps.

As for its hardware specs, well, we guess you can’t really expect a powerhouse from the Asha lineup, but for those who are interested, the Asha 501 will sport a 3” scratch resistant display, a 3.2MP rear-facing camera, and a battery which Nokia claims will have a stand-by time of up to 48 days, with 17 hours of promised talk time on 2G. If you’re interested in seeing more of the Asha 501, check out the video above whereby Nokia provides a hands-on video with the device.

Nokia Asha 501 Could Be Announced Tomorrow

Nokia Asha 501 Could Be Announced TomorrowWhen it comes to leaks, the folks over at @evleaks do seem to have the art of snagging accurate leaks down pat. In fact, they have had a far higher percentage of hits compared to misses, which is a good thing, as their reliability rating is certainly weighty in nature. Well, it seems that @evleaks has another golden nugget to ponder over, with whispers that Nokia could very well announce a new device tomorrow, with the Conversations blog posting a teaser that depicts a solitary rounded button. Of course, any leak should always be taken with a pinch of salt until official confirmation arrives, but for all intents and purposes, the Nokia Asha 501 could very well be announced tomorrow.

The Nokia Asha 501 is said to be a full-touch device despite not falling under the true blue smartphone category. A single physical button located under the screen (hmmm, sounds like an iPhone at first, no?), you will not find any hardware “home” button as the user interface will use the touchscreen for the extra controls required. Who knows, the receiver keys could be capacitive this time around, and this might also mean there has been a revamp in the S40 touch interface.
