ASUS video showcases 7inch MeMo Pad, flaunts what the $150 tablet can do

Lately, ASUS hasn’t exactly been the best at keeping some of its secrets under wraps, but the company is trying to be as good as it can be about helping potential customers better understand its devices. More specifically, it’s the recently announced 7-inch MeMo Pad, with the Taiwan-based outfit taking to YouTube to release a simple and somewhat informative video on some of the tidbits you can expect out of the Jelly Bean-loaded, budget-friendly tablet. Naturally, ASUS is quick to point out how the MeMo Pad’s relatively small chassis “fits perfect in your palm,” as well as showing off how effortless it is to stay in the social loop with video calling capabilities and things such as BuddyBuzz. Other touted features of the 7-inch slate include its expandable storage via that microSD slot, plus the easy access to various productivity and entertainment apps like MyPainter, SuperNote Lite and ASUS Studio — oh, and for folks who enjoy a little color, the previously seen trio of Spectrum Covers can also be spotted making a quick cameo. You can “experience” the vid yourself past the break, and feel free to let us know what has you the most excited about the Nexus 7 this particular MemoPad.

ASUS FonePad reaches certification, may meld an Atom tablet with Android

ASUS FonePad tablet pops up in certification, may meld Atom with Android

No, not PadFone. FonePad. According to Indonesia’s wireless regulator Postel, ASUS is trying to certify a FonePad K004 tablet that would switch up device names, not to mention create its fair share of mix-ups. But what is it? Based on that K004 codename and a match with a Thai retailer’s listing, Notebook Italia believes it’s none other than the recently leaked ME371MG, an Atom Z2420-based, 7-inch tablet that would run Jelly Bean. It might also carry 3G and justify its name through built-in phone functionality. We’re skeptical when the specs aren’t confirmed, and don’t entirely line up — there’s just 8GB of space in the retail entry versus the originally claimed 16GB, as an example. If there’s any fuel to the fire, however, the new round of MeMo Pads will eventually have some Intel-powered (if confusingly-named) company.

Engadget’s tablet buyer’s guide: winter 2013 edition

DNP Engadget's tablet buyer's guide winter 2013 edition

As we begin 2013, we’re stuck in a kind of tablet limbo. Most companies rushed to get devices out for the fall, while the models we saw at CES 2013 aren’t yet shipping. As such, it’s a mostly familiar deck, with Apple, Google and Microsoft once again striving for the top spot. That said, there are new entries from Amazon and ASUS, and many of us who didn’t score some sweet loot this holiday season have a slate-sized pile of cash to spend. If you’re in that situation, continue on for our first tablet guide of 2013.

Note: If you’re looking for tablets with an Atom or Core i5 CPU, you’ll find those in our forthcoming laptop buyer’s guide, since they have the same guts as notebooks (or netbooks, in some cases). For the purposes of this tablet guide, we define tablets as slate-type devices with low-power ARM processors.

Asus MeMO Pad Debuts In Official Promo Video

Asus announced the 7-inch Android tablet dubbed as the Asus MeMO Pad earlier this month. The tablet is expected to hit stores later this year for the price of at $149. Well, it seems that Asus is teasing the tablet once again. You are looking at the first official advert of the Asus MeMO Pad. Asus has just published the ad today and managed to highlight some of the tablet’s cool features. Among the teased features include an application called Asus Studio which is used to manage, edit, and tag photos. (more…)

Asus ME371MG Called Fonepad K004

Asus ME371MG Called Fonepad K004A rose, by any other name, would smell just as sweet. I guess the same applies to the Asus ME371MG, where it is also known as the Fonepad K004 just in case you were wondering. In fact, it has been priced at $265 in, of all places, Thailand – which ain’t too shabby actually. The Asus ME371MG tablet is basically one that is pocket-friendly, not only in terms of size but price, where it will certainly offer the Nexus 7 a run for its money in terms of pricing details.

We did hope to catch more information concerning the Asus ME371MG at the recently concluded CES last month, but there was nary a peep from the folks over at Asus. Ah well, since good things come to all of those who wait, here we are with more information concerning the Asus ME371MG. A Thai online retailer revealed the price for this bad boy, where it will run on an Intel Atom Z2420 processor which clocks in at 1.2GHz, accompanied by 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal memory. The 7” IPS display will sport a 1280 x 800 resolution, where it will also feature GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

ASUS MeMO Pad 7 official video sufaces

After revealing the device last month, today is the day that ASUS launches the MeMO Pad 7. What better way to celebrate than with a new launch video? The video shows off the budget-friendly MeMO Pad 7 in all of its glory, with ASUS choosing to focus on the apps it has developed for the new slate. You can catch it after the jump.

asus-memo-pad-tablet-540

Interestingly, ASUS chooses not to focus on the tablet’s specs in the video, but there’s probably a good reason for that. After all, the tablet starts at $149, which means that ASUS isn’t able to outfit it with the best equipment around. Instead, we’re shown a number of apps ASUS has included with the MeMO Pad 7, like ASUS Studio, BudyBuzz, MyPainter, and SuperNote Lite.

There are more apps on display other than those, but we don’t want to ruin everything about the video. Though ASUS keeps talk about hardware features brief, it does make sure to point out that the MeMO Pad 7 comes with a microSD slot. The company also reminds us that those who purchase the MeMO Pad 7 will get 5GB of free cloud storage with ASUS WebStorage, which will be a handy feature to have indeed.

Though the MeMO Pad 7 looks pretty similar to the Nexus 7 (which ASUS also made), its specs don’t exactly match up. The MeMO Pad 7 features a 7-inch screen displaying at 1024 x 600 resolution, a 1GHz VIA WM8950 processor, 1GB of RAM, and a relatively beefy 4,270mAh battery. The tablet is also running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, so while it isn’t the best tablet on the block, it may not be a bad idea for those who are looking for an inexpensive slate.

[Thanks Alex!]

This Might Be The Asus MeMo Pad 10

This Might Be The Asus MeMo Pad 10 All right, tie a napkin around your neck with this dish from the rumor mill, and make sure that none of the salt you sprinkle on this rumor does not end up on your shirt. A Dutch website showed off what very well could be the Asus MeMo Pad 10, where it sports a 10-inch display with a punch-packin’ quad-core 1.2GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. The display itself is touted to carry a resolution count of 1,280 x 800 pixels, where it is accompanied by 1GB RAM on board alongside 16GB of internal storage space in the form of flash memory.

Of course, just in case 16GB is not good enough for you, there is also a microSD memory card slot, and a 5-megapixel camera at the back with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice rounding off the list of features. A bunch of Dutch retailers have already started to take pre-orders for the Asus MeMo Pad 10, where it is said to cost €299 a pop. Are you looking forward to the Asus MeMo Pad 10?

ASUS MeMO Pad 10 Smart revealed in product leak

This week the folks at ASUS have had a bit of a leak in their pipes with both product images and details surrounding their next Android tablet, the ASUS MeMO Pad 10. This machine (product number ME301T) works with a 10.1-inch IPS LCD display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor under the hood. Oddly enough, inside this machine you’ll find just 1GB of ram, and that display resolution is less than what we’ve seen on devices like the Transformer Infinity from last year – could this be a budget-minded machine?

What we’re seeing here is an extension of NVIDIA’s plan to push down-clocked versions of their processors to machines that are then priced so low that the competition cannot possibly compete. And it’s not the first time this has happened. We saw this strategy working in the Google Nexus 7 tablet also manufactured by ASUS, and that tablet has been selling like hotcakes since birth.

This ASUS MeMO Pad 10 will be busting out with 16GB of internal storage, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box, and both front and back-facing cameras. The front facing camera will be 1.2 megapixels while the back will be 5 megapixels strong, and you’ll have a microSD card to store all the media you collect – at the moment we’re not sure what the max card size is that you’ll be able to plug in there, but we’re expecting 32GB.

BONUS: This tablet has been tipped more than once before with basically the same specifications – looks to be a lock!

This tablet will be working with a microUSB port instead of the larger port used on previous ASUS tablets and will have a microHDMI port as well for working with your HDTV. This tablet has been tipped to be appearing for between 329 to 389 Euro, this meaning a direct conversion to USD would still be above $500 – not exactly wallet friendly. We must expect that this price will be modified for the US market or that the device wont be appearing inside our borders – we shall see!

Also of interest is the fact that this machine has appeared in press photos in blue and white while the listings found thus far have also shown red and pink casings available at launch – wild stuff! Expect this tablet to appear at Mobile World Congress 2013 more than likely!

IDC shows ASUS and Samsung skyrocketing in tablet sales

Though Apple’s iPad lineup remains undeniably dominant in tablet PCs globally with a beastly 43.6% market share, IDC is showing that this Q4 2012 both Samsung and ASUS have bashed their previous records for sales to bits. Samsung’s Q4 shipments hit 7.9 million units in 2012 while one year before their quarter only hit 2.2 million – that’s a 263% jump in unit sales. ASUS also had a mighty jump with 402% more units sold this quarter compared to one year ago, with 3.1 million compared to just 600,000 in Q4 2011.

hero1-580x409

The IDC study showing worldwide tablet shipments show that the tablet industry in general is growing by leaps and bounds, with Amazon coming in at 6 million units sold and third on the list and Barnes & Noble being the only company in the top 5 to have had less of an impact on the market than it did Q4 one year ago. Taking all vendors into account, 52.5 million tablets were shown as shipped in Q4 2012, this showing a healthy 75.3% growth year over year.

It’s worth noting that the results the IDC shows are not exact, with some estimates coming before financial earnings reports are released officially. The data being distributed today is what the group calls “preliminary data” and is part of the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker for January 31, 2013. Another bit of information that may not be clear right out of the barrel is the fact that tablet sales include not just mobile operating systems like iOS and Android, but Windows RT and Windows 8 as well.

Barnes & Noble’s unit sales went down this quarter compared to one year ago, but their market share increased. ASUS’ market share went down through the number of tablets it sold went up over 400%. Wacky things are happening in this market right this minute, that’s for certain. Now we go about tracking how the tablet market is swallowing up the PC market and we really see some strange ideas.

According to d Tom Mainelli, research director, Tablets, at IDC, the PC market “saw shipments decline during the quarter for the first time in more than five years.” In contrast, as you can see above, tablets are very much on the rise with no end in sight (so to speak). Keep your eye to the analytics, folks, things are getting flatter by the quarter.
