Asus Confirms Android 4.2 Update For Tablets

Asus logoAsus has a pretty good track record when it comes to rolling out the latest Android operating system updates for their range of devices so far, and it seems that the company does not want to tarnish such a record by confirming that they are currently working on Android 4.2 updates to be released for their tablets in due time. So far, this bit of news hails from a couple of Dutch-based websites, but any more specific information remains off limits to us.

Needless to say, it does not come as a surprise to us to hear that Asus Transformer Prime TF201 would be first in line to pick up the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update, and Asus did say that this particular tablet will be on the receiving end of the tablet “soon”. There was no mention of other specific tablets by Asus other than the Transformer Prime TF201, but fret not – Asus did give their word that they are working on a similar update for the rest of its stable of tablets.

Project Inverted turns a gaming PC inside-out with hand-made casing

Project Inverted turns a gaming PC insideout with handmade casing

While we’ve seen some exotic PC mods in our time, most of those still dutifully stuff all the computer parts into a box, hiding them from the outside world. Martijn Laman isn’t one for that kind of traditionalism. His recently completed Project Inverted, just highlighted by ASUS, puts most of the hardware on the outside: the Sabertooth Z77 motherboard, Core i5 processor, fan cooling, memory, Radeon HD 6870 video card and watercooling pipes all sit in plain sight. Everything is joined by a unique, hand-cut case whose backbone and elevated base hide the custom wiring, the watercooling pump, two solid-state drives and controllers for both fans and lighting. And did we mention the 7-inch touchscreen? The result is a truly special gaming rig that’s relatively quiet and pristine despite baring its heart and soul for all to see. Building a replica won’t be quick, nor will it be cheap at about €1,500 ($1,909), but Laman’s detailed assembly process could well be the inspiration for a few more extroverted PCs.

PSA: HTC One X+, five other devices from ASUS, HTC, Novatel and Samsung on sale at AT&T

HTC One X+ for ATT

American carriers love to launch their device lines in bundles, and AT&T just proved the rule in style. Forget the LTE iPad mini — six other devices have shipped in one day, covering just about every category Big Blue offers. Want a Windows tablet? There’s a $500 ASUS VivoTab RT waiting for you. Smartphones? HTC’s $200 One X+ covers the high-end, while its $50 One VX and Samsung’s $100 Galaxy Express target the more frugal among us. Even shutterbugs and cutting-edge networkers can pick up a $500 Samsung Galaxy Camera or Novatel’s $50 MiFi Liberate hotspot. There’s no doubt that AT&T is cramming the channel full of new gadgets in the hopes of scooping up all the Black Friday sales it can, but we’ll forgive the slightly cynical strategy for the sake of a wider device selection.

ASUS powerline adapter has four Gigabit LAN connectors, one of which gets VIP treatment

ASUS powerline adapter has four Gigabit LAN connectors, one of which gets VIP treatment

ASUS has made a strong case for the future of powerline networking with its new PL-X51P/PL-X52P powerline adapters (the PL-X51P is a single unit while the PL-X52P is a two-adapter bundle). They’re the first in the market to have four — that’s right, four — Gigabit LAN connectors each. If that wasn’t enough, one of them is actually a designated VIP port designed to push whatever’s connected to it to the top of the bandwidth priority list, presumably so you can speed up the download of that totally legal copy of Game of Thrones on one computer while smacking gnomes around in World of Warcraft on another. The adapters have an extra outlet each so you can still use the socket while an integrated noise filter helps compensate for powerline fluctuations. There’s also 128-bit AES encryption and ASUS promises speeds of up to 500Mbps. The model seen here looks to be Europe/Asia only due to the shape of the plug; we’ve yet to see one suitable for the US. Similarly, there’s no word on pricing, but we’ll be sure to update you with more information once we find out.

Asus VivoTab RT arrives on AT&T this November 16th for $499.99

AT&T has just announced that they will be offering the Asus VivoTab RT this coming November 16th at $499.99 a pop, where this is one tablet which was specially designed for the Windows 8 operating system. That purchase will also be accompanied by a free Mobile Dock with a keyboard as well as an additional battery. You can say that AT&T is in a class of its own, as they are the only carrier in the US to make available the new LTE tablet from Asus in time for the frantic holiday shopping season.

The Asus VivoTab RT will measure a mere 0.33” thin, and tips the scales at an impossibly thin 1.18lbs, making it one of the lightest and thinnest tablets around in the market. It will also be very pleasing on the eyes, boasting a stunning metallic design. You will not find it come up short where processing power is concerned, thanks to a beefy NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 12-core graphics, accompanied by a high-resolution 10.1” (1366×768) Super IPS+ display that will certainly be a boon to your eyes. In front lies a 2-megapixel shooter, while at the back there is an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and auto-focus. Make sure you know just which data plan you want to have to go along with this! SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 13, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening everyone. We had a pretty big day, what with the reveal of the HTC DROID DNA and all. HTC announced that the DROID DNA will be arriving at Verizon on November 21, and we even managed to go hands-on with the device and its wireless charging dock. Of course, today was also the day that the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 10 became available on the Google Play Store. All but the 16GB Nexus 10 sold through pretty quickly, so we hope you got your hands on the device you wanted before Google put up the out of stock notices.

3G Nexus 7s started shipping earlier today, and we found out that Apple stores take in $6,000 in sales per square foot. IHS is predicting that the Wii U will sell 3.5 million units by the end of 2012, and Nokia has announced its new HERE mapping service to take on Google Maps. The release preview of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 is now available to check out, and there seems to be a pretty major issue with some of the Black Ops II PC discs floating around out there.

Verizon and Motorola begin sending out OTA Jelly Bean updates to the DROID RAZR M today, while Google started installing its fiber network in Kansas City. BitQwik has released a search app for Evernote users, while Verizon said it will be launching 4G LTE in a bunch of new markets on November 15. mLogic unveiled a new PCIe expansion chassis that’s compatible with Thunderbolt, Android 4.2 has made its way to the Android Open Source Project, and Murfie and Sonos have teamed up to help you move your physical CDs into the cloud.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm was finally given a release date earlier today, Vimeo has launched a new preview of its upcoming pay-to-view program, and we learned today that the ASUS VivoTab RT will be landing at AT&T later on this week. Finally tonight, we have a few originals for you to have a look at. Chris Davies tells us why the HTC DROID DNA should have been a Nexus device, while Chris Burns gives us his reviews of the Olympus Stylus XZ-2 and the Otaku Camera for iOS. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

ASUS VivoTab RT arrives at AT&T on November 16

Those considering the ASUS VivoTab RT might be pleased to know that it has finally be given an AT&T release date. The new Windows RT tablet will be available at AT&T stores and from AT&T’s website starting on November 16, which is this Friday. The tablet will be priced at $499, so you’ll be saving a bit of money by going through AT&T, but that low price requires a two-year commitment and that you sign up for a data plan.

AT&T says that this $499 price tag is offered as part of a special holiday promotion, so don’t expect it to stick it around forever. AT&T is currently running a deal that could potentially save you $100 off the price of VivoTab RT if you purchase a Windows smartphone and sign a two-year contract, but we’re not sure at the moment if this is deal is part of the aforementioned “special holiday promotion.” If it is, expect to pay a little more than $499 for your VivoTab RT if you aren’t planning on picking up a Windows smartphone alongside it.

In any case, November 16 is the day it arrives at AT&T, so get ready folks. AT&T touts that it will be the “exclusive” carrier of the VivoTab RT this holiday season, so if you want to get a VivoTab RT and use it on a mobile data network, it sounds like AT&T is the place to go for now. The VivoTab RT comes with a 10.1-inch IPS display running at 1366×768 resolution and a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor – while the screen resolution might leave something to be desired, we can’t imagine too many complaints about the processor.

That processor will be working alongside 2GB of RAM to keep things speedy, and the VivoTab RT also features a rear-facing 8MP camera for snapping pictures. ASUS has also made an optional keyboard dock for the VivoTab RT that features two USB ports and helps extend the battery life of the tablet. Will you be picking up your VivoTab RT from AT&T when it launches there later this week?

AT&T to start selling the ASUS VivoTab RT on November 16th for $500, keyboard dock included for a limited time

We’ve known for some time that AT&T would sell an LTE version of ASUS’ VivoTab RT tablet running Windows RT, but until today we just had the vague promise that it would arrive “in time for the holidays” (Christmas, Hanukkah, Flying Spaghetti Monster Day, take your pick). Well, now we know: AT&T just issued announced the 4G VivoTab RT will go on sale this week, on November 16th, with a list price of $500. For a limited time, at least, that price includes the keyboard dock you see pictured above. (The press release says it comes with a “Mobile dock with a keyboard and additional battery,” as if they’re separate pieces of hardware, but that’s just some sly wording: the keyboard dock has a battery built in.)

Additionally, AT&T is running a promotion in which users get $100 off the VivoTab RT (or any other AT&T tablet) after purchasing a Windows Phone handset. If you read the fine print in the press release at the link, you’ll see that AT&T is requiring a two-year agreement for both the phone and tablet. Buy the tablet unsubsidized, though, and you can add it to an existing data share plan for $10 and up per month. Either way, is it worth the added data fees? We’ll leave that to you, but we would suggest you pay particular attention to the software section of our review: this thing was awfully buggy when we tested it.
