Hexxeh ports Chromium OS to the Nexus 7 simply because he can video

Coder extraordinaire Hexxeh earned much of his reputation from porting Chromium OS to just about everything, some of his targets more audacious than others. It’s about time he come full circle and port a Google platform to another Google platform, and he just recently did that with a very early Chromium OS conversion for the normally Android-based Nexus 7. Details are scarce other than that WiFi and touch input are working, although that’s really all that’s needed for something so web-centric, isn’t it? We’ll cut Hexxeh some slack when he says he’s in no rush to produce a more easily installed build for Jane and Joe Modder — when he mentions spending hours hacking the OS into the tablet just for fun, he probably deserves some leeway.

[Thanks, yo2boy]

Asus says Nexus 7 sales are close to 1 million per month

The Google Nexus 7 tablet is made by Asus, which is a Taiwanese company. According to an Asus exec, monthly sales of the Android-based tablet are closing in on 1 million units each month. The tablet has a seven-inch screen and a low starting price of $199.

You might think that Asus and Google would want to brag about their tablet and how many units are selling, but the duo has been vague on actual sales figures. Asus executives recently offered the clearest indication of sales volume yet during their Q3 earnings conference held yesterday. Asus CFO David Chang told the Wall Street Journal that in the beginning about 500,000 units were sold each month.

Chang then continued stating that the number increased to in the area of 600,000 to 700,000 units per month and last month sales figures were close to 1 million units. Previous sales estimates indicated Q3 sales in the area of 800,000 to 1,000,000 units based on an analysis of Google’s revenue figures. One reason Asus and Google aren’t bragging about the sales numbers for the Nexus 7 could be that compared to the iPad, sales are not that great.

Apple sold 14 million iPads in Q3 out of 25 million tablets sold globally. Google recently announced two more Nexus devices, including a Nexus 10 tablet and a Nexus 4 smartphone. The tablet will go for $399 with 16 gigabytes of storage, and the phone will sell for $299 without a contract.

Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million per month

DNP It's official, Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million a month

While it was pretty clear that ASUS’ Google-partnered Nexus 7 contributed heavily to the Taiwanese maker’s healthy Q3 results, there was no official confirmation on its exact sales figures so far. ASUS CFO David Chang has now come clean and told the WSJ that the 7-incher is close to touching the one million per month mark, just about double the rate of sales at its launch. While this number is a fraction of the iPad’s sales (14 million in the last quarter alone), it could well go up due to the recent price drop and the addition of new 32GB models to the portfolio. On the flip side, the Nexus 7 is sure to face heat from close rivals, the Kindle Fire HD and the 7.9-inch Apple iPad mini, while the mega-spec Nexus 10 will also entice some buyers away from ASUS’ reach.

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet reportedly selling nearly 1 million units every month

With the Google Nexus 7 offering Android tablet users an unadulterated Android experience, many assumed that it could prove to be a serious competitor to Apple’s iPad. On the flipside there were probably some who expected the Nexus 7 to flop – after all Android tablets, save for a few, have not exactly been success stories. Well as it turns out, ASUS (via WSJ) has announced that sales of the Google Nexus 7 are reaching almost a million units a month, a pretty impressive feat we have to admit considering that the tablet was released a few months ago. With the Nexus 10 tablet having been made official, along with new Nexus 7 variants of different sizes and mobile connectivity, it is very likely that tablet sales of the Nexus 7 will achieve even greater numbers.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 30, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening everyone. We had so many big posts today that it’s hard to know where to start. Kicking things off, we’re live at Microsoft Build 2012, bringing you the latest on Windows 8, Surface, and Windows Phone 8. We also went hands-on with the Samsung Nexus 10 and the LG Nexus 4 today, so be sure to check those out if you’re thinking about picking up either (or both!) when they launch next month. Today we found out that Disney is buying out LucasFilm and that Star Wars Episode VII is in the works – both of those were major announcements for the millions of Star Wars fans out there.

Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer told us that 4 million Windows users have upgraded to Windows 8 since it launched last week, and today the company release the Windows Phone 8 SDK for eager developers. Twitter outed its Windows 8 app a few months ahead of launch, while Microsoft confirmed that apps like PayPal and Dropbox will be hitting the new operating system shortly. Microsoft also responded to complaints about Office 2013 on Surface, so if you’ve got one of the company’s new slates, you might want to hold off on using Office until these problems are fixed.

The fourth generation iPad has been benchmarked, showing a 1.4GHz A6X processor and 1GB of RAM, and one analyst was spotted predicting massive sales for the iPad line up. Apple delayed the roll out of its new iTunes overhaul today, while Google said it will be pushing developers to make extraordinary app experiences for Android tablets. Hurricane Sandy knocked out a number of big sites like Gawker and The Huffington Post over the weekend, and Modern Warfare 4 was outed by one excited voice actor.

Shortly after announcing that Disney had purchased LucasFilm, George Lucas talked about the deal and the future of Star Wars in a new interview, and today the Pentagon clarified that it will still be using BlackBerry phones in addition to iPhone and Android handsets. Grand Theft Auto V has been confirmed for a Spring 2013 release, and we received quarterly reports from both MetroPCS and ASUS today, the latter of which did particularly well in its third quarter.

Before we go, we want to remind you that our reviews for the iPad Mini and the fourth generation iPad went live not too long ago, so check those out if you’re interesting in buying one! That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

ASUS reports Q3 2012 earnings

ASUS just posted its third quarter earnings for this year, and the company ended up recording its largest quarterly profit in more than four years. During the third quarter, the company earned a net income of $229.1 million, which is up 43% from the same time last year. ASUS posted a total Q3 revenue of $3.8 billion.

The company’s laptop and tablet shipments in the third quarter were up from last quarter. They ended up shipping 5 million laptops (up 14% from Q2), and also shipped 2.3 million tablets, which is up by a whopping 300% compared to last quarter when ASUS only shipped 800,000 tablets. That’s quite a big increase to say the least.

According to research firm Gartner, ASUS also had the biggest rise in PC market share during Q3. They now have a 7.3% market share and the company’s shipments rose 12%. To compare, other PC makers, such as HP, Dell, and Acer, all reported lower shipments and market share for the third quarter period.

ASUS is expecting another big quarter in Q4 2012. They’re expecting their laptop shipments to go up 10% from the third quarter to 5.5 million units. They’re also expecting tablet shipments to go up as well. They’re hoping to ship 2.6 million tablets, which would be up 13% from the third quarter.

Asustek Q3 net profits said to be up 43 percent to $230 million thanks to Nexus 7, convertibles

ASUS PadFone 2 handson

Asustek has just painted a pretty Q3 financial picture, showing a 43 percent jump in net profits — $230 million compared to $160 million last year, according to the WSJ. Gross revenue also climbed 9 percent to around $3.8 billion, which the company attributes to the popularity of its Google-partnered Nexus 7 tablet, along with convertibles like the Transformer Prime TF201 and a healthy notebook lineup. Asus boosted PC shipments nearly 12 percent according to the last round of Gartner surveys, helping it stay the fifth largest player in that market. The company sees good things ahead for Q4 too, expecting double digit gains in PC and tablet shipments due to its burgeoning Windows 8 lineup finally hitting the market. That’ll depend, of course, on how well users gravitate toward the fledgling OS.
