FCC Fridays: August 17, 2012

FCC Fridays August 17, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

Nexus 7 returns to Google Play as 3rd parties push accessories

Google has once again fully replenished their supply of ASUS-made Nexus 7 tablets in both 8 and 16GB iterations, with delivery again cut back to 3-5 days on both models. Several times since the launch of this device in both iterations we’ve seen the Google Play store online move shipping times back to weeks instead of days and once or twice run out of stock of one or both tablet sizes entirely. At the moment it appears that Google and ASUS have come to a point where supply has met the demand.

In addition, groups such as DODOcase have begun shipment on accessories like their HARDCOVER case. This case makes the Nexus 7 appear to be a hardcover book and is available in four different colors, red, purple, gray/black, and blue. Also included here is a magnet hidden in the cover so that when the cover is closed, your Nexus 7′s display will be put to sleep!

We’ve also had a peek at the official Nexus 7 case as distributed by Google too – it’s quite simple and not a whole lot of imagination is required to make it work. You’ll not have to worry about dropping your device on gravel anymore should to pick this unit up, that’s for certain. This case is also available on the Google Play store online and shipping is just as quick as the unit itself.

And for those of you that want to grab a Nexus 7 tablet with no cash at all, there’s always an NVIDIA event like the one we’ve got going on right now. All you need to do is tell us what your favorite Tegra-laden device or TegraZone game is and BAM! You’re right in the mix – grab one of three right this second!

ASUS TF500T spotted at the FCC, details unknown

If you’ve enjoyed ASUS’ tablet releases so far, it seems that the company has a new tablet planned and it goes by the model number TF500T. It could be the model for a model they’ve shown off in the past, but it sure sounds pretty new to us! Needless to say that only its shape and model number was revealed in its FCC filing and other more interesting details, like its hardware specs, software, its design and etc. remain somewhat of a mystery for now, although somewhat generic specs such as WiFi, HDMI and a microphone were listed.  In any case based on its shape alone, we’re pretty sure that we’re looking at a tablet here but who knows, right? We will be keeping our eyes peeled for more information on this mysterious ASUS TF500T, but if you have an inkling as to what it is or want to speculate, feel free to leave your thoughts and comments below!

ASUS’ TF201, yeah we liked that. What about the TF300 and TF700. Pretty neat. We don’t have all that many thoughts on the TF500 yet though, mainly as we’d never heard of it until it popped up at the FCC. Sadly there is precious little else we can tell you about it other than it has WiFi in b, g and n flavors (shocker), HDMI and a microphone. Based on the number scheme alone, we could possibly surmise that it’ll be a new middle of the firm’s tablet line, but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Place your bets now.

ASUS Zenbook Prime faces teardown, affords a little expansion in an even smaller space

ASUS Zenbook Prime faces teardown, affords a little expansion in an even smaller space

We often assume that Ultrabooks scarcely have any room to budge on the inside, and that’s usually true. An iFixit teardown of ASUS’ Zenbook Prime has proven that there’s always an exception to the rule. Looking at a UX32VD with the same base layout as the UX31 we reviewed, the repair outlet finds that the upgraded Zenbook has both embedded and removable RAM: provided owners are still willing to perform some surgery, they can upgrade past the 4GB of included memory on their own terms. The repair team is a bit dismayed that there’s a 5,400RPM hard drive spinning near the mini SSD — how very 2011 — but notes that it’s equally swappable by those who want something faster. Whatever you think of the fully pieced-together ASUS PC, it’s apparent there’s a reward for those willing to take it apart.

IHS iSuppli: Apple iPad takes 69.6 percent of tablet brand market share in Q2, reader tablets take a bruising

IHS iSuppli Apple iPad takes 696 percent of tablet brand market share in Q2, reader tablets take a bruising

An earlier portrait of the second quarter’s tablet market share made it quite clear that the iPad was on a rebound, if it was ever in a slump to start with. All those numbers focused on platforms and not brands, however — we didn’t know how the individual makers were doing. If IHS iSuppli’s figures are on the ball, there’s even more of a discrepancy if you break down the period’s results by manufacturer. The iPad staked out 69.6 percent of tablet shipments in the spring. That wasn’t just an 11-point jump over a year earlier; it was a level of share Apple hasn’t had since the Motorola Xoom was just cutting its teeth early in 2011.

As for the rest? Transformer Pads kept ASUS growing, but it’s not a pretty sight if you’re making an Android reader tablet; both Amazon and Barnes & Noble shed roughly a point and a half each, which is no small amount relative to their size. Samsung also lost share by this after its deliveries of Galaxy Tabs mostly stayed flat. We’d add that there’s some wiggle room as to real performance knowing that units shipped and sold aren’t always one and the same. Most of these companies are leaving clues regarding upcoming tablet refreshes that might level the playing field, some not so subtle, but it’s currently Apple’s game to win.

PlayStation Mobile detailed: different screens, same games

PlayStation Mobile announced connects to Android platform

Sony’s decided to spill the beans on PlayStation Mobile, its upcoming cross-platform gaming service. It will connect to your own PSN ID, linking into its software store and aiming to offer up a “wide range of portable experiences.” We’re still looking at PlayStation-certified devices here, but Sony’s also announced that ASUS and (bizarrely) Wikipad hardware will join the (pretty Sony-centric) line-up. We can already recognize a handful of Xperia phones alongside the Tablet S and, of course, Sony’s premier handheld, which will also be able to play the incoming selection of mini-games.
