FCC Fridays: August 3, 2012

FCC Fridays August 3, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

IDC: Apple’s still king of the tablet hill with 68 percent of the market

IDC Apples still king of the tablet hill with 68 percent of the market

IDC‘s cabal of statisticians, nerds and people who just love spreadsheets have handed down their latest document about the state of the tablet market. Of the 25 million slates shipped in the second quarter, 17 million of them were iPads — giving Apple 68.2 percent of the market. Samsung came second with 2.4 million devices and Amazon third, although since the Kindle Fire maker doesn’t reveal numbers, there’s probably some guesswork involved there. Rounding out the top five are ASUS and Acer, although the former should expect to move up a place (or two), depending on the success of the Nexus 7 when Q3’s results are released in a few months time.

Apple tops Q2 computing and MS Surface will sink say analysts

Apple took top spot in worldwide PC shipments in Q2 2012, according to one research firm, making up almost 20-percent alone when tablets are lumped in with desktops and notebooks. Year-on-year growth for the Mac and iPad maker reached almost 60-percent to more than 21m units for the three month period, Canalys calculates, comfortably exceeding HP, Lenovo, Acer and Dell.

HP just squeezed into second place for the quarter, with a dwindling 0.4-percent marketshare lead over Lenovo in third place. HP’s share amounted to 12.5-percent, a fall of 11.3-percent compared to Q2 2011 when it held the top spot in shipments.

Lenovo mustered 12.1-percent and managed to make the biggest growth year-on-year, at 27-percent. Acer and Dell both sit below the 10-percent mark, Dell slipping from third place in Q2 2011 to fifth place this year.

iPad sales particularly helped Apple, pushing the company back to pole position. However, Samsung also did well, its Galaxy Tab shipments estimated to have doubled year-on-year, while ASUS made strong advances thanks to the sub-$400 TF300. That advantage is expected to continue now that the sub-$200 Nexus 7 is on the market.

The prospect for Windows PCs isn’t quite so rosy. Canalys isn’t convinced that Microsoft’s Surface will open any new doors, likely being low on profit potential as well as potentially damaging the company’s relationship with other Windows OEMs. “We expect the Surface pads to have a similar impact on the PC industry as the Zune did in portable music players” analyst Tim Coulling says ominously.

ASUS Nexus 7 Bluetooth keyboard case and rotating folio revealed

More official Google Nexus 7 accessories have emerged, including a Bluetooth keyboard case for the 7-inch Jelly Bean tablet, and a rotating folio-stand that allows for both portrait and landscape use. The ASUS-made add-ons are all expected imminently, UK retailer MobileFun claims, finally broadening the range of accessories Nexus 7 owners can choose from beyond the current polyurethane cover.

The Bluetooth keyboard case works as a regular folio for the Nexus 7, but also includes a kick-stand on the back to prop the tablet up at an angle on your desk. That way you can use the splashproof keyboard – which probably means rubberized keys, which will sadly cut down on typing feel – which itself promises 45hrs of battery life and simple recharging via microUSB, just like the Google tablet itself.

The rotating stand case, meanwhile, props up the Nexus 7 and allows it to swivel between landscape and portrait orientation. It, like the non-swiveling stand case, has a leather-effect outer and a microfiber interior lining.

Other accessories include the simple folio case, though it’s not clear if this is the same as the leather folio that leaked earlier this week. Currently it’s only listed in black, though the leather model is expected in four difference colors. Finally, there’s a screen protector, which promises not only resistance to greasy fingers and scratches, but better contrast from the Nexus 7′s LCD.

The Nexus 7 rotating case will be £27.95 ($44) while the non-rotating version will be £22.95 ($36). The folio case will be £39.99 ($62), while the Bluetooth keyboard case will be £79.95 ($125). Finally, the screen protector will be £14.95 ($23).

Nexus 7 accessories leaked, incoming dock

Asus’ Nexus 7, the Google tablet that has certainly made its fair share of waves over the past few weeks, looks set to be on the receiving end of its fair share of accessories, no thanks to a leak of presentation files that have somehow managed to sneak and make a way to Nordic Hardware. Nordic Hardware, not wanting to be selfish, decided to share this bit of news with the rest of the world, and some of the accessories include the already known Smart Case clone, a $20 Travel Cover which has already started to lurk around Asus and Google websites. Not only that, there is also a higher class leather Premium Cover version that will more or less cost double the amount. Why not throw in a cradle into the set as well? This $50 Nexus Dock sports an extremely simple wedge design and has all the relevant audio outputs. Bear in mind that these should arrive sometime later next month as summer winds down to make way for autumn.

Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes

There have been teases here and there that Google’s Nexus 7 was going to get a full, official accessory treatment from ASUS, but actual details have been scarce. Consider ASUS’ cover blown, almost literally. Presentation files finding their way to Nordic Hardware show the known Smart Case-like, $20 Travel Cover that’s already lurking on the ASUS and Google websites, but they also spoil a leather Premium Cover that will reportedly cost $40. As for a cradle to round out the set? While the company had previously confirmed that a dock was coming, we’re now getting a glimpse of the $50 Nexus Dock’s super-simple wedge design and audio output. With the exception of the Travel Cover, the accessory bonanza is pegged by the slides as arriving in late August — just in time for that last-gasp summer vacation.

Update: Nordic Hardware has since taken down its original post “at the request” of an unnamed party.

Asus Tablet 810 spotted at the FCC

Another day, another tablet device is released, but before such a thing can happen, said tablet will need to go through the hallways of the FCC. Well, we are pleased to say that the Asus Tablet 810 has just arrived at the FCC, where it will run on the Windows 8 operating system, now how about that? At least this is not yet another one of those zillions of tablets that run on the Android platform. The Asus Tablet 810 with Windows 8 certainly did not waste too much time to drop by at the FCC, considering how its younger sibling, the Asus Tablet 600 arrived just a couple of days before.

If you happen to have a penchant for model numbers, then the Asus Tablet 810 will be known as the TF810C, and its filing does not reveal too much information to us other than it being a WiFi-only device that has the relevant and expected NFC connectivity to deliver quick peripheral synchronization. It will come with an 11.6″ form factor, and we do look forward to this Asus tablet considering how the company more or less scored gold with another tablet – the Google Nexus 7.

Best Buy offers Asus Transformer Pad Infinity for Asus Transformer Prime?

For those of you who are clearly part of the early adopter school of thought, here is something which you might be interested in – it seems that folks who purchased an Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime at the end of last year and are not too happy with what your hard earned money gave you in return, keep your fingers crossed. It seems that a bunch of Transformer Prime users have reported that those who purchased the offending tablet from Best Buy might stand a chance of exchanging the tablet from Best Buy themselves for a spanking new Asus Transformer Pad Infinity.

To date, we have heard of how Asus Transformer Prime units have actually been affected by various issues including poor GPS performance, near non-existent Wi-Fi reception, issues concerning Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity when both options are turned on at once, as well as lag problems that persist regardless of the number of Over The Air updates. If this is true, then it is nice of Best Buy to run such an exchange program. Faith in corporations restored!

ASUS Tablet 810 with Windows 8 transforms its way past the FCC

ASUS must want its Windows 8 tablet family to move together as one. The Tablet 810 has swung past the FCC just two days after a visit by its younger brother, the Tablet 600. While not what we’d call a stunning revelation, the filing for the 810 (as the TF810C) shows a WiFi-only device with the expected NFC for quick peripheral syncing. The 11.6-inch transforming slate is still devoid of a few key details in spite of having its wireless life laid bare — namely, if and when it reaches the US. Clearing the approval hurdle, however, leaves few obstacles to ASUS being one of the first out of the gate with an Intel-based Windows 8 tablet after October 26th rolls around.

Google posts Android 4.1 Jelly Bean images for Nexus devices, modders rejoice

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on Google Nexus S

If you’re the sort to get a little too adventurous with CyanogenMod 10 or other custom ROMs, Google just gave you a crutch. Android 4.1.1 factory images are now available for every Nexus device that can currently get a taste of Jelly Bean: the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and the expected Nexus 7. While it’s not a complete safety net, the gesture will let dedicated modders flash their phones and tablets knowing that they can almost always jump back to the pure OS if someone’s definition of “alpha build” is a little too rough. CDMA users are unfortunately left out of the loop; let’s just hope they’re brought up to speed before too long.

[Thanks, Vince]
