Android-powered tablets are dime a dozen, but from time to time, there is something that comes along which has an increased sense of expectation, and I guess you could say that the yet unreleased Asus Tablet 600 which has arrived at the FCC is something you might want to consider owning in due time. The most recent FCC filing does point towards an Asus branded tablet which will not be taking the Android route, but rather, bearing the mark of Windows 8 from Microsoft. Also known as the TF600T by the Feds, this yet unannounced product does seem to sound similar to the Tablet 600 which was displayed for all and sundry to have a closer look at at Computex earlier this year. Upon checking out more about the Asus Tablet 600, we do know that it will come with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, not to mention having NFC support. I would say that the Windows logo as well as Transformer-like model number are the main reasons of interest.

ASUS continues to update its VG monitor series, and this time it’s got something a little more impressive than an integrated IR transmitter. According to FlatpanelsHD, the VG278HE has knocked through the 120Hz barrier that most monitors come up against. The 27-incher can be configured to a buttery smooth 144Hz for 2D and 3D gaming, while inputs include HDMI, dual-link DVI and VGA. The monitor also supports NVIDIA’s 3D Vision 2 — but you’ll have to buy the rest of the parts separately. We’ve reached out to ASUS about pricing and availability, but until we hear more, you’ll just have to imagine those breezy refresh rates. Update: ASUS told us we can expect to see the display hit shelves sometime in Q4, but noted that pricing has not been finalized.

While we’ve known the pricing and availability attached to ASUS’ new flagship slate in the US for some time now, UKers had been left to wonder when they’d finally be able to get their eager palms on that rebranded and well-specced Pad Infinity. Thankfully, that’s about to change, as the Taiwanese outfit just announced the Transformer TF700 will be up for grabs from Amazon in the UK starting August 31st, with the sticker value set at £600 for the rather spacious 64GB configuration and with the useful dock included. Naturally, that’s only a small part of the entire package, given how you’d also be getting a beautiful 1920 x 1200 display and the famed Tegra 3 chip to get you through the days. The only tedious bit is you’ll still have to wait a while to place your order; in the meantime, however, you could always give our review yet another read.

Asus has quietly slipped in a new feature in a bunch of their more recent motherboards including the P8Z77-V and a few of its contemporary brethren, calling this feature “USB attached SCSI protocol”, or UASP if you find it to be a mouthful. According to Asus, UASP might nearly double the speed of USB 3.0 connections to external hard drives and SSDs, hence speeding up the transfer rate of older USB 2.0 connections, now how about that?

To put it simply, UASP throws on top a blanket of modernity to the USB transfer protocol. USB 2.0 and 3.0 at the moment still rely on the Bulk-Only Transport (BOT) protocol for mass storage I/O, which is a very simple (a nicer way of saying dumb) protocol that limits USB 2.0 to just 480Mbps, while USB 3.0 carries a maximum data rate of 4.8Gbps – hence pushing the limits of the BOT protocol, especially when one is moving 100s of MBs per second from an SSD or a VelociRaptor.

UASP will ditch BOT and have something similar to SCSI as a replacement, making it far more suitable for low-latency bulk data transfers. Hot Hardware did perform a benchmark, hitting 5% to 20% increase in speed boost compared to the 70% that Asus claims. Minimal? Well, at least is better than nothing, right?

There’s more than a small amount of fervor swirling around the Nexus 7, so it only makes sense that Google wants to seize the moment and pitch its first Nexus tablet to the world. Its first commercial is a very Norman Rockwell-like, father-and-son camping trip — if Rockwell replaced Boy Scouts with Jelly Beans, that is. The 7-inch slate handles just about every task the two could care for, whether it’s learning about (and exaggerating) the local fauna as well as keeping busy on a rainy day. We’ll let you witness the slight twist of an ending first-hand, although we’ll add that Google is careful to use a lot of Nexus 7 features that don’t demand always-on WiFi: the search giant wants us to know that we can head to the boonies without the tablet becoming a paperweight. The one shock is the absence of that all-important $199 price, which you’d think would help trigger some impulse shopping. You can reconcile your disbelief and enjoy some family bonding by catching the full commercial after the break.
