Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Being Rolled Out

Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Being Rolled Out

The GDR3 update is the latest Windows Phone 8 update that brings a number of improvements and enhancements. This update has already been rolled out for a few WP8 devices, and now Samsung’s flagship device is finally receiving it. That’s right, Samsung ATIV S, which is the only flagship Windows Phone 8 device from the Korean manufacturer, is now receiving the WP8 GDR3 update.

The biggest improvement that GDR3 brings is support for 1080p displays and faster processors such as the quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Users won’t be able to make use of this support unless they buy a Windows Phone device that actually has those things, Nokia has a new device out that has a 1080p display. Apart from that, the GDR3 update brings features such as a new driving mode, option to use Wi-Fi for setting up a device, ability to close apps from the multitasking screen as well as the ability to lock orientation of the display to portrait or landscape mode. The update also lets users select custom ringtones for a wide variety of items such as instant messages and calls or texts from certain contacts. Windows Phone 8 GDR3 for Samsung ATIV S is being rolled out in phases, so it might take a while before the update becomes available in your particular region.

Samsung ATIV S Hack Delivers 3 Column Live Tiles

Samsung ATIV S Hack Delivers 3 Column Live TilesDon’t you just love hacks? And by that, I mean it to be of the good kind, not the hacks that make life miserable for everyone in the case of identity theft. Well, here we are with word that some folks over at the XDA-Dev forum have had a fun time messing around with the Windows Phone operating system on the Samsung ATIV S, where they managed to introduce the 3 column live tile home screen that happens to chug along pretty nicely on a display that has 720p resolution.

In order to enable a 3 column live tile home screen on your Samsung ATIV S, all you need to do is to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\Software \ Microsoft \ Shell \ OEM \ Start and change ScreenSize to 1, ensuring that the home screen on your Samsung ATIV S would end up looking like the Nokia Lumia 1520 which is on the verge of a release. For additional detail that would be able to shed more light as well as insight into this particular hack, it would bode you well to head on over to the XDA Developers forum.

Oh yeah, I am also quite sure that you might also want to check out the custom ROM for the Samsung ATIV S while you are at it.

Samsung ATIV S Gets Custom ROM Released

Samsung ATIV S Gets Custom ROM ReleasedIf you have always had a mind to customize your Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone handset, then you might be pleased to hear that a custom ROM for said smartphone has been announced by the folks over at XDA Developers. Apparently, a particular developer who prefers to be known as “WOLF” has come up with this particular custom ROM that will not only unlock the device, but it will also add to it a range of new features. For instance, whenever you flash this ROM, it will do away with the volume limit on the handset, so that you can crank up the volume to limits that you never could before – although there is also the inherent risk of “blowing up” the speakers as well.

This particular custom ROM would also do away with pre-pinned Samsung apps and the other apps that have been pre-loaded by the South Korean manufacturer. When you have loaded this custom ROM, it would let you search using Google or Yandex, and should both apps be installed, you can opt to use either one of them using the search key. Not only that, this particular custom ROM would also be able to provide you with full access to APNs and Internet Sharing capability.

Samsung Receiving Visits By Top Microsoft And Google Executives

Samsung Receiving Visits By Top Microsoft And Google Executives

Go back half a decade or so and the only things you would think of when someone mentioned Samsung would be home appliances. Now the South Korean manufacturer’s name is synonymous with high-end smartphones, churning out hit after hit such as Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note etc. It is a force to be reckoned with in the global smartphone market. In recent times we have seen Samsung shift its reliance away from component suppliers, it now uses self-manufactured components wherever it can. It is also believed that Samsung is willing to be less dependent on Google and Microsoft for software, a move which would definitely set off alarm bells at Mountain View and Redmond.

Samsung ATIV S And HTC Tiara Could Be Sprint’s Windows Phone Offerings

Samsung ATIV S And HTC Tiara Could Be Sprints Windows Phone OfferingsThe other day Sprint launched a landing page for Windows Phone, suggesting that an announcement for the carrier’s upcoming Windows Phone devices could be around the corner. While an official announcement has yet to be made, The Verge has learned that the carrier will be offering at least two Windows Phone devices, although if their information is accurate, we’re not sure if these are devices worth getting that excited about. One of them is apparently the Samsung ATIV S, a rather unassuming Windows Phone 8 device which looks a bit like Samsung’s Galaxy Android devices, although that may not be a bad thing.

The other device is the HTC Tiara, a 4.3” Windows Phone device that has yet to make an official appearance, although recent sightings of its specs revealed its WVGA display, a 1.2GHz dual-core chipset, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and an 8MP camera. While these phones will be more than capable of getting the job done, we have to say they aren’t as exciting as devices like the HTC 8X, the Nokia Lumia 920 or even the rumored aluminum Lumia 928. In any case both phones are scheduled for a release in May/June later this year.

    Samsung ATIV S Review

    Samsung ATIV S Review
The ATIV S is the first Windows Phone 8 device released by Samsung, featuring quite the same hardware specifications as the Galaxy SIII and the look of the Galaxy Note 2 in a smaller and lighter chassis. The ATIV S gets the same 4.8” 720p display and the Snapdragon S4 processor as its Android-powered alter ego. On the market, this smartphone is going head to head with the Nokia Lumia 920, the Windows Phone 8 current flagship, and the HTC 8X, which delivers a slightly lower build-quality than both contenders.

The ATIV S main advantage over the Lumia 920 is its light weight and its compact form factor alongside its larger 4.8” display. However, the Lumia 920 has great advantages of its own, including the low-light camera and exclusive Nokia software. In this review, we will test the Samsung Ativ S in real-world conditions and look at the most important aspects of the phone. We will compare it to other Windows 8 phones, and we will tell you how it stands against the Nokia Lumia 920.

Samsung ATIV S spotted in Austria, global rollout on the horizon?

We’re sure that there are some folks out there who are glad to hear that the Samsung ATIV S has not been delayed and that it should see a release before the year is out, but when exactly? There hasn’t been any announcements from Samsung yet, but it looks like the rollout of the ATIV S could be a quiet one. The handset was recently spotted on the website of T-Mobile in Austria, proudly showing that the Windows Phone 8 handset is in stock! Thanks to the folks at derStandard, not only have they managed to confirm that the unit is indeed in stock, but it is also available on the shelves of the carrier and have attached a photo as proof (above). We can only hope that this is a sign that the ATIV S will see a similar rollout to other countries around the world. No word on when it will be arriving stateside, but we will keep our eyes peeled nonetheless so do check back with us at a later date for the details.

Samsung ATIV S Not Delayed After All?

Earlier in the morning, we brought you word that the Samsung ATIV S will be delayed to a February 2013 release, but it seems that later in the day, news broke that this might not be the case after all. According to Samsung as to whether rumors of a delay were true or not, the South Korean conglomerate mentioned that delivery for the ATIV S by the end of the year is still on track. I guess that hearing from the horse’s mouth itself, it would put to rest any further speculation or rumors.

To be fair though, the ATIV S was first announced in August this year, so it is not surprising to hear of rumors concerning a delay after Samsung is seen to take their own sweet time in getting the device to the market. What do you think is the hiccup behind this apparent delay, could it be the lack of parts, or the manufacturers are unable to spare some space on their assembly lines? Hopefully it has nothing to do with ensuring all the components work correctly!

    Samsung ATIV S Delayed Again?

It seems that the first Windows Phone 8-powered handset from South Korean conglomerate, Samsung, has hit yet another snag – it has been delayed, at least according to the good people over at SamMobile. The anonymous source tipped them off that Samsung will start to ship the ATIV S from week 52 onwards – which would mean that it is the last week of the year, and that translates to the ATIV S being delayed. Folks who have already placed an order for the ATIV S and were looking forward to using a spanking new handset this Christmas would definitely be disappointed, and for those of us living across the pond in Europe, you might even have to wait all the way until January next year.

Is there a reason for the delay? Well, some think that because the Samsung Galaxy S3 is such a hot seller at this point in time, and since the ATIV S shares a similar display as that of the Galaxy S3, Samsung might have pushed back the ATIV S’ release due to a production switch in build and materials.
