Samsung teases new Galaxy and ATIV devices for upcoming London event

On this quiet Monday, Samsung decided to do a little teaser for its upcoming “Premiere 2013” roadshow event in London on June 20th. The above poster only mentions “Galaxy & ATIV,” which suggest the event will mainly feature Android and Windows-based devices. The remaining tiles show partial shots of three mysterious devices — possibly a tablet or phone, a convertible laptop (à la Sony VAIO Duo 11) and a camera (maybe the rumored Galaxy S 4 Zoom?). Obviously, we’ll be at the event to solve this mystery, so stay tuned for more.

Samsung ATIV Book 7 review: a high-end Ultrabook arriving just before Haswell

Samsung ATIV Book 7 review: a high-end Ultrabook, arriving just before Haswell

If you’ve been waiting for Samsung to refresh last year’s Series 9 Ultrabook, don’t hold your breath; apart from a recent upgrade to 1080p resolution, it’s basically stayed the same. That doesn’t mean Samsung is taking a break from ultraportables, though: the company recently started shipping the Series 7 Ultra (now called the ATIV Book 7), which debuted at CES. Regardless of the name, the idea was always for it to be part of Samsung’s performance line, ranking right below the flagship Series 9 family. To that end, it ships for $1,060 with all the specs you’d expect to find in a mid- to high-end Ultrabook: a Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, a 13.3-inch, 1080p display and a stronger set of speakers than on the Series 9. Obviously, the fact that it’s launching with Ivy Bridge is one knock against it, but how does it stack up otherwise? Might it be a good deal if it ever gets a CPU refresh?

Samsung announces ATIV Book 5 and ATIV Book 6

Samsung has an entire slew of consumer electronics devices, and these range from home appliances to entertainment devices, and one other segment that they are particularly big in would be the smartphone and notebook industries. The thing is, the ATIV name has traditionally been attached to Windows-powered devices, where the Samsung ATIV S was their maiden attempt at a smartphone which runs on the Windows Phone 8 operating system. Well, just like how the Galaxy name offers a slew of smartphones and tablets that run on the Android platform, Samsung has decided to give the ATIV name more leeway, where it will now include all of its Windows based PCs. With that in mind, one ought to take note that there are two new notebooks released under the ATIV banner, namely the Samsung ATIV Book 5 and the Samsung ATIV Book 6.

The Samsung ATIV Book 5 was specially designed for speed and mobility, where it represents the next generation of Samsung Ultrabooks. It will come with 24GB of ExpressCache to deliver rapid boot up and load times, allowing them to access their favorite apps and programs on the vibrant 14” touchscreen in a jiffy. It tips the scales at a mere 4.19 pounds and measures under an inch thin, letting you bring the Samsung ATIV Book 5 wherever you want to be productive without missing a beat.

As for the higher powered Samsung ATIV Book 6, this will be the notebook that Samsung hopes will be able to deliver the ultimate computing experience without having to sacrifice mobility. It will be an elegant touch-enabled laptop that comes packed with a top-of-the-line Intel Core™i7 processor, accompanied by a 15.6-inch full HD touchscreen, has Samsung’s exclusive RAMAccelerator technology to enable the ATIV Book 6’s 8GB RAM to function up to 1.5 times harder compared to traditional memory.

Regardless of which model you choose, they will come preinstalled with SideSync technology, which will enable users to seamlessly switch from working on their PC to their Android-based Samsung smartphone. This is done in a simple manner, all one needs to do is hook up the two two devices via a USB cable, and you’re good to go, responding to a SMS on a smartphone using your PC keyboard, now how about that? The Samsung ATIV Book 5 and ATIV Book 6 models will retail for $899.99 and $1199.99, respectively.

Samsung leaks the ATIV Book 6: a regular Windows 8 notebook possibly headed to the US for $1,200

Samsung leaks the ATIV Book 6 a regular Windows 8 notebook possibly headed to the US for $1,200

It’s not a hybrid like the ATIV Smart PC, it doesn’t run RT like the ATIV Tab or Windows Phone like the ATIV S, and yet the laptop above is apparently destined to become part of the family. The ATIV Book 6 hasn’t been formally announced, but an accidental and promptly-pulled listing on Samsung’s site suggests that it takes on the shape of a regular high-spec Windows 8 notebook with a 15.6-inch 1080p touch sensitive display, Core i7 processor, up-to-date Radeon HD graphics chip, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. In other words, it sounds very much like the equivalently priced Series 7 Chronos, apart from the non-metal casing, the model number and potentially other differences we don’t know about yet, such as broader availability — after all, the Chronos we first spotted in the States was something of a Best Buy exclusive. You’d think the ATIV branding would have to signify something, but history says otherwise.

At Long Last, Samsung’s ATIV Odyssey Will Make Its Verizon Debut On Jan. 24

odyssey1

Well, after being teased at presentations and making brief appearances at football-themed trade show events, Samsung’s elusive ATIV Odyssey finally has a price and a release date. According to a recent update from Verizon, the humble Windows Phone will make its debut on January 24 (i.e. tomorrow), and will set prospective buyers back $50… eventually. As usual, Verizon is sticking to their obnoxious mail-in rebate tendencies, so those who take the leap will actually shell out $100 at time of purchase.

In case you haven’t been keeping tabs on this little guy, it’s a far cry from the attractive ATIV S that Samsung showed off late last year. The Odyssey packs a 4-inch Super AMOLED display running at 800×480, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a run-of-the-mill 5-megapixel rear camera, and 8GB of internal storage. Not the most exciting spec sheet, certainly, but plenty to provide users with a smooth ride as they fire up apps and scroll through live tile after live tile.

As annoying as the practice is, the mail-in rebate is far from the most peculiar thing about the ATIV Odyssey. What’s really got me curious is the timing of the launch — by pushing out the device only a day after announcing the thing, it almost seems like Verizon just doesn’t care about the thing. Granted, it’s not as sleek or as immediately impressive as devices like HTC’s Windows Phone 8X (and even Nokia’s Lumia 822 feels like a more solid device), but it just might be the right phone for a potential smartphone owner on the fence. I’m sure that’s what Samsung and its carrier partner are hoping, anyway.

White Samsung ATIV Smart PC launches in South Korea, remains the same inside

White Samsung ATIV Smart PC launches in South Korea, remains the same inside

There’s obviously something about gadgets dressed in white livery that attracts plenty of consumers, and thus it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see Samsung introduce a bleached model of its own ATIV Smart PC. Unfortunately for some, however, the maker of the Galaxy line is keeping this particular launch local, with the white ATIV Smart PC set to be an exclusive to South Koreans — well, at least for the time being. Regardless, Samsung’s Windows 8 hybrid remains unchanged otherwise, meaning there’s still that same 11.6-inch, 1,366 x 768 display, a 1.8GHz, dual-core Clover Trail processor, 4,800 mAh battery and 64GB of onboard storage. The frosted ATIV device is on sale now for 1,090,000 won (around $1,000) — but, hey, because we know there are likely would-be buyers outside of South Korea, we have a gallery past the jump to show what’s being missed.
