Hands On With Verizon’s Elusive Samsung ATIV Odyssey Windows Phone

odyssey1

Samsung’s ATIV Odyssey has been a real noodle-scratcher of a device ever since its existence was first hinted at during Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 launch event. Well, consider that particular veil lifted — Samsung had a near-final version of the Odyssey to play with here at Digital Experience in Las Vegas, and I took the secretive little guy for a spin.

But first, the particulars. Under the Odyssey’s glossy plastic hood is a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor as well as 1GB of RAM. To be quite honest, the screen was nothing to write home about (though that’s really nothing for a device of this caliber) — it’s a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED panel, the likes of which you’ve seen many times before.

Couple that with 8GB of internal flash storage, a removable 2,100mAh battery, and a microSD card slot and you’ve got all the makings of a half-decent mid-range Windows Phone. Despite touting the device in a release earlier today, Verizon is still keeping mum on pricing and availability, but I wouldn’t expect that to be the case for much longer.

Since Microsoft has very stringent requirements, most of these lower and mid-range Windows Phones run very similarly. That’s hardly a bad thing — it gives Windows Phone a sense of consistency that’s often lacking from other platforms — but it means that there really isn’t much to expound on here. Swiping between through a homescreen full of ever-blinking live tiles was seamless, and it kept up nicely as I darted in and out of apps.

When it comes to design, the Odyssey won’t come as a shock to anyone who’s manhandled any other mid-range Samsung phone in recent years (oh, and that leak from late last year was dead on). It strikes a fine balance between the round, rather bulky body of Nokia’s Lumia 920, but isn’t quite as slim or as nicely tapered as HTC’s Windows Phone 8X. In many ways it’s a typical Samsung device — lightweight and plasticky, but with a surprisingly sturdy feel. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the Odyssey’s physical design is just how small it feels in your hand; it’s only been a year or two since 4-inch smartphones were the pinnacles of product design.

All things considered, the ATIV Odyssey seems like a neat (if somewhat underwhelming) Windows Phone. Verizon may have a winner on its proverbial hands if they price the thing aggressively enough, but it’s not hard to see how a device like this could easily be overshadowed by more able hardware.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro tablet with LTE clears the FCC

Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro with LTE clears the FCC

It’s been increasingly tough to keep all of Samsung’s Windows 8 tablets straight recently, with changing names adding to the confusion, and it looks like you can add one more variation to keep track of. A new Series 7 model, the ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T, has turned up at the FCC today boasting some hereto unannounced LTE connectivity — although that doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering Samsung’s already delivered a non-Pro ATIV to AT&T. Of course, that “Pro” designation means you’ll be getting an x86 processor and the full-fledged version of Windows 8 instead of RT, but it’s not clear what other changes this version might have in store compared to non-LTE model.

Correction: As some have pointed out below in the comments below, the non-Pro model does also come with the full-fledged version of Windows 8, not RT.

Samsung Ativ Smart PC 500T: Don’t Expect Any Miracles

Samsung’s Ativ Smart PC tablet is supposed to be a tablet-sized tablet that can run all of your desktop apps. It is all that, sort of. But it’s also a mix of things that are impressive, tolerable, and totally unacceptable—sometimes all at once. More »

Samsung Ativ Odyssey Image Gets Leaked Ahead Of December Launch

ativ-odyssey

The existence of Samsung’s Verizon-bound Ativ Odyssey smartphone was one of the bigger surprises at Microsoft’s recent Windows Phone 8 launch event — it was the only handset highlighted that hadn’t already been revealed — but no one was willing to talk details at the time.

That’s unfortunately still the case now, but thanks to a newly-released photo from @EvLeaks, we at least know what the damn thing looks like.

Bad news, design nuts: any of you expecting the Odyssey (a.k.a the SCH-i930) to be as sleek or as stylish as the Galaxy S III or Ativ S will probably come away disappointed with the final product. The device naturally retains some of the design language used in its more handsome cousins (especially the striated finish on its back plate), but the Odyssey seems to be a rounder, chunkier affair. Personally, I get a distinctly mid-range vibe from this thing, but it’s tough to see where it fits into Verizon’s current line-up of Windows Phones considering the dearth of details on the Odyssey right now.

That’s not to say there’s absolutely no information on the device floating around out there — if a product document that Samsung submitted in the midst of its legal battle against Apple holds true, the Odyssey may end up sporting a 4.65 Super AMOLED HD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a Snapdragon MSM8960 chipset. That would essentially make the LTE-friendly Windows Phone a slightly smaller version of the Ativ S, but we’ll soon see how accurate that is — the Ativ Odyssey is slated for a stateside launch sometime in December.

AT&T offers Samsung ATIV Smart PC and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 from November 9th

AT&T has announced that November 9th will be the date when both the Samsung ATIV smart PC and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will arrive at AT&T retail stores in the US, letting you take advantage of AT&T’s 4G LTE network with your spanking new device(s) if you decide to pick them up. Just to recap, the Samsung ATIV smart PC is a spanking new tablet which was specially designed for Windows 8, while something we would all be more familiar with is the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, where it will play nice with the 4G LTE spectrum.

You might want to check your bank balance before that though, as the Samsung ATIV smart PC has been slapped with a rather hefty $799.99 price point, while the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a wee bit more affordable at $499.99 a pop. Not only that, Samsung and AT&T wants you to have that feel good factor going by offering customers up to $100 off should you purchase any connected Samsung device of lesser or equal value, whenever you pick up a Samsung Galaxy smartphone of your choice – albeit with a two-year agreement, of course. Samsung ATIV Odyssey brings even more Windows Phone 8 to Verizon this December

Samsung ATIV Odyssey brings more Windows Phone 8 to Verizon this December

Microsoft’s ultimate Windows Phone 8 event mostly expanded on a familiar story, but it did leave us a surprise twist near the end. The company confirmed that Samsung will bring its own Metro-tinged experience to Verizon through the ATIV Odyssey this December. Unfortunately, that’s about all we know on an official level: Microsoft even used a placeholder graphic rather than show Samsung’s real-world design. However, that awfully familiar-sounding name suggests that Samsung and Verizon are directly exploiting that Odyssey codename which many associated with the ATIV S. If so, we’re looking at a device that’s not at all far off from a GSM equivalent, keeping the Snapdragon S4, LTE and both 8- as well as 2-megapixel cameras. Whether or not the Super AMOLED screen dips to a slightly lower 4.65-inch isn’t as known. Even so, the ATIV Odyssey is at least another sign that Verizon will have much more than a token Windows Phone lineup this time around.

Windows Phone 8 Device Availability: Phones Hit Europe This Weekend, U.S. In November

joe3

Windows Phone 8 is coming to European carriers this weekend, coming to the rest of the world in November, with devices from Lumia, HTC and Samsung including the 920, 8X and Ativ S hitting online stores and retail shelves. The mobile OS has been anticipated for a while now, but this is the first we’ve heard of a specific street date, so now you know when you can actually get your hands on Microsoft’s latest hotness.

Verizon will be getting the 8X and 822 by Thanksgiving. AT&T will get the Lumia 820, 920 and HTC 8X by November, and T-Mobile is getting the Lumia 810 and 8X by November 14. Sprint appears not to have gotten on the Windows Phone 8 launch train. The Lumia 920 goes on sale at Rogers in Canada, tomorrow

Europe gets the big advance, however, as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said on stage at the event that all the phones he showed off today (the HTC 8X, Ativ S, Lumia 920) would be available to purchase in European countries beginning well ahead of U.S. launches this weekend. And the Lumia 920 goes on sale at Rogers in Canada, starting tomorrow. That means U.S. users will have at least a couple weeks to read over first impressions and reviews before decided to “go all in” on Windows Phone 8, as Ballmer is fond of saying.

Samsung prices ATIV range of devices

With Windows 8’s release date just around the corner, you know for sure that manufacturers who are focusing on Windows 8-powered devices will definitely work overtime to make sure that their hardware’s release date(s) will be in tandem as well. Samsung has revealed the pricing details for their ATIV range of Smart PCs, where the ATIV range will come in unique hybrid designs, sporting the likes of detachable keyboards among others.

The Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T and 700T will share touchscreen compatibility, come with detachable keyboards and will be powered by Intel processors, allowing you to run your slew of Window RT apps under the new touch user interface environment, as well as just about anything else you want to run without restrictions being placed on what you and cannot install. The ATIV Smart PC 500T will retail for $750 with a keyboard, and is $100 cheaper without one.

As for the ATIV Smart PC 700T, this puppy is more of a standard notebook in terms of hardware specifications, where it boasts of an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and a $1,200 tag. Are you looking forward to what Windows 8 has in store for you?

Samsung Series 5 and 7 Notebooks hands-on!

Windows 8 is coming out on October 26, and you know what that means: OEMs are trotting out their newest and slickest machines running Windows 8 in order to get them in the minds of consumers when they go shopping this holiday season. We’ve seen Acer and HP’s offerings, but next up is Korean electronics giant Samsung. Back in August, we saw Samsung’s tablets, the Slate 5 and Slate 7, but those aren’t laptops. Samsung confirmed today that for the US market, those will be using the ATIV moniker. The coolest aspect of that line is that they will all feature the SPen technology we’ve seen on the Galaxy Note.

Also, we just got a look at Sammy’s notebooks: the updates to the Series 5 and Series 9 laptops. Samsung’s Series 9 has been their highest end laptop: it’s billed as an Ultrabook, and it’s only half an inch thin. The real star of the show is the 1600×900 screen, which Samsung claims can output at 400nits of brightness. There’s a 15-inch option and a 13-inch option. Both of them come with a Core i5, but only the 15-incher gets 8GB of RAM. Both have a 128GB SSD. Samsung claims to have squeezed 10 hours battery life out of its 5800mAh battery. And it will come with Windows 8 pre-installed. It will start at $1299.

The Series 5 has been Samsung’s mid-range option–but in an interesting twist, Samsung’s added touch. It comes with Intel processors, starting with a Core i3 and an upgrade option for a Core i5. It should have an standard spinning HD with 24GB of SSD for fast startup. The screen, although it’s a multitouch screen, clocks in at a disappointing 1366×768 resolution.  The whole package should start at $799.
