AERIAL7 TANK DIY over-ear headphones Review

The folks at AERIAL7 have come through with a lovely pair of over-ear headphones in the TANK, here in their newest iteration bringing you a completely do-it-yourself aesthetic. The DIY TANK model comes in all white with a set of materials on the surface that allow for great connections with markets, paint, ink, and everything in-between. Got an artist in the family that also likes to customize everything they own? This might be just the ticket.

These headphones provide a sound quality that’s certainly reflective of the price at $100 USD – 57mm drivers with frequency response between 5-20KHz and sensitivity at 108 +/- 3dB at 1KHz. In other words, they sound great for your average music lover. Also included in the package is a 1 meter long coiled standard headphone jack cable that extends up to 2.5m, a 1.2m light weight cable with a microphone for your smartphone, and a 3.5mm – 6.3mm (1/4″) adapter to plug in on your much more massive equipment.

These headphones are rather adjustable with folding-in action for storage, flip-up phones so you can listen in with one ear along, and thick earphone covers so you’re not hearing all sorts of outside forces when you’re trying to concentrate on your favorite track. The headband also extends for multiple head sizes – even if you’ve got a gigantic melon.

As these headphones are entirely white before you get to coloring them in, the package includes a lovely silky sack to carry the phones (and your cords) around in. Not just for protection against the elements and keeping your bits all together, but to stop the dirt in your backpack from messing up your phones soon-to-be-lovely aesthetics. To color the phones you get three rather generous permanent markers in the box: red, blue, and black. I say generous because they’re not your standard throwaway “10 minutes and over” sorts of crap markers, they’ve got quite a bit of juice in them.

The actual application process you’ll go through with these phones is pretty decent. There’s no surface here that doesn’t readily accept the markets included in the package, and aside from the same “just let it dry for a second” caution you’ll need to pay attention to no matter what surface you’re working with, you’ll find the art portion of this adventure to be entirely enjoyable. We’ve opted for a rather simple set of designs on the phones we’ve got here thus far, hitting each of the different materials and all angles to make sure we’ve got no dead-zones on the hardware – good news: it’s all good!

iTunes 11 to be released in the next few days?

The next iteration of iTunes, iTunes 11, is expected to be a major revamp but unfortunately the launch of iTunes 11 has been delayed. No specific date was given for its release apart from a November time frame, although if the reports are to be believed, it looks like we can expect to see iTunes 11 go up for download in the next few days. According to reports, it seems that Apple has sent out requests to artists and music labels for high resolution images and galleries for its iTunes 11 release, which according to the message, will be “within the next few days”. We have no way to confirm whether these reports are accurate so we suggest you take it with a grain of salt for now, but since we are still in November and Apple did promise a release in November, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination if this was real. In anyway case we’ll keep an eye out for the next few days and see if the rumors pan out, so stay tuned for more updates!

ORA Speaker Wraps Around Your iPad to Give You Surround Sound – Literally

Thanks to it’s less-than-stellar internal speaker, there are a lot of iPad speakers to choose from in the market. Personally, I’ve got my sights set on the ORA. It’s the first of its kind that I’ve seen, and so far, I like what I see.

ora ipad speaker case

It’s basically a speaker that surrounds your entire iPad. Actually, I stand corrected: there are actually eight speakers surrounding the iPad.

Ora Speaker

Now it won’t give you surround sound even though the speakers are all around your tablet, but it will give you decent audio so you and a whole bunch of other people can gather around and watch a movie or two. It also functions as a case for your iPad, and offers an optional front flip-cover that works like Apple’s Smart Cover.

The ORA Speaker is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $99(USD) will get you one, while $129 will get you the speaker along with the matching cover/stand.

Ferrari Logic3 Scuderia FS1 Bluetooth Speaker Dock

The Ferrari Logic3 Scuderia FS1 Bluetooth Speaker Dock is no ordinary speaker dock, especially when you have the fabled prancing horse logo dancing right across it. It is said that this particular Bluetooth speaker dock was inspired by the Scuderia Ferrari racing team as well as the GT car’s innovative lines, creases and curves. It will burn a $549 hole in your pocket (and no rubber on the asphalt), boasting a sleek and sophisticated design. The Ferrari Logic3 Scuderia FS1 Bluetooth Speaker Dock will be one of the more exclusive 2.1 speaker systems you will purchase at that price point, where it will be powered by patented Class HD Technology that has been integrated with a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), and the latter controls the crossover and equalization so that it can coax the very best performance possible, boasting natural musical timbre and extended low frequency response.

Do not despise its rather compact and small design, as the Ferrari Logic3 Scuderia FS1 Bluetooth Speaker Dock does deliver incredible and powerful sound quality. It comes with an integrated 30-pin connector to juice up as well as play Apple devices.

Moxie Shower Head with Bluetooth Speaker: Songs on the Water

Some people love to sing while taking a shower. Not to brag, but I’m one of the world’s greatest listeners, so I prefer my bathtime music to come from another source. If you have the same preference, first of all high five! Second, here’s a shower head who prefer to leave our music to the professionals.

Highway to Hell Leads AC/DC to iTunes

If you like some of the music that AC/DC has made over the years, like me, it probably pains you to pay full price for a complete album when you only want a couple tracks. Sadly, AC/DC has kept their music off the iTunes digital music store so no one could buy individual tracks – until now. AC/DC’s full catalog is finally available on iTunes.

acdc

That means all sixteen of the band’s studio albums, along with four live albums, and three compilation albums are now available to purchase as digital tracks. Apple is also offering two exclusive iTunes collections. Naturally, one of those collections is called The Collection and gives you all sixteen studio albums for $99.99 (USD).

ac dc itunes

The other special collection only available on iTunes is called The Complete Collection, which includes all the studio albums, live albums, and box sets for $149.99. The best news is that fans can now purchase any individual track they want from any of the bands albums.

For those about to download, we salute you.

AC/DC’s entire catalog lands on iTunes!

I’ve been a fan of AC/DC since back in the day when I watched Maximum Overdrive repeatedly growing up. I’m certainly not a gigantic fan by any means, I have a bunch of songs the band has made over the years that I like, but I find the bulk of their stuff not that appealing. That means I’ve had to buy multiple CDs just to get a couple of tracks that I like off each one onto my mobile phone.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who likes some of AC/DC’s music that has wished, hope, and prayed that they would take the path The Beatles took and bring the music to iTunes. That happy day has finally come with AC/DC’s complete catalog now available on iTunes. All of the tracks have been Mastered for iTunes and spans from their 1976 debut Hi Voltage to the last of the rocker’s 16 studio albums.

The AC/DC collection on iTunes also includes four live albums and three compilation albums that are all available for the first time on iTunes. Fans can download full albums or purchase individual favorite songs. ITunes is also offering two digital compilations including The Complete Collection, which is an iTunes exclusive AC/DC catalog, and The Collection including all 16 studio albums.

The Collection with all 16 studio albums will cost $99.99. The Complete Collection includes all the studio albums, live albums, and box sets for $149.99. I’m glad to finally see the band allow their music to be sold digitally.

Honda’s HEARBO Robot Listens Better Than Most of Us

While more and more devices are beginning to be able to understand what we’re saying, one problem that we face is that not everything that we communicate is in the form of a verbal cue. With that in mind, the roboticists at the Honda Research Institute have been working on a robot that can not only understand words, but other sounds.

hearbo listening robot

HEARBO (the HEAR-ing roBOt) uses a technology called Computational Auditory Scene Analysis to distinguish various sounds from its environment. This allows it to not just pick out verbal communication, but everything from the beep of an alarm clock to the mailman knocking on your front door. It can then use this information to make decisions about what to do.

The specific version of the technology being used for HEARBO is called HARK, an open source library that breaks down the understanding of sounds into three steps: localization, separation and recognition. This allows it to not only distinguish sounds in a noisy location, but exactly where they are coming from. In fact, the technology can nail down the direction that sound is coming from down to 1 degree of accuracy. Currently, the system can distinguish up to four different sounds going on at once, but in theory more microphones could allow it to handle even more sources.

Here’s a short demonstration video showing how the robot can understand what’s going on despite the world’s most annoying alarm clock going off the whole time:

And here’s an example of HEARBO easily distinguishing music from human commands, identifying song attributes, and even dancing a little bit:

So why develop such a robot? The technology could be used for things like robot butlers that could automatically answer the doorbell, or do things like turn off the TV if the kids have been using it for too long.
