Nexus Q announced
Posted in: Today's ChiliAs expected, Google announced a new piece of hardware known as the Nexus Q. This is the result of Project Tungsten that was introduced more than a year ago, where it will bring together the power of Android and Google Play. The Nexus Q is a definite looker, and is the first piece of hardware from Google alone with Android running within. It is tipped to be the “third wave” of consumer electroncs, and Google has positioned it to be “all about the cloud”, giving you a general direction of where the Nexus Q is heading. (more…)

There’s certainly no shortage of speakers and docking systems for the iPad and other Apple gadgets. That doesn’t mean users are always looking for the next cool and interesting speaker system for their iPad though. A company called Carbon Audio has launched a new line of speakers designed to pair with the iPad and more called Zooka.
The Zooka isn’t a docking station, as you might expect, it’s a long speaker bar with a slot that you can slip your iPad into. The Zooka is available in a rainbow of colors, including black, blue, dark gray, green, orange, pink, purple, red, and teal. The system will be officially launched in August, and you can pre-order now if one of the colors strikes your fancy.
The Zooka promises concert hall audio for movies, music, games, and more. The slot on the Zooka is designed to attach a speaker to your iPad, but it uses Bluetooth to stream the audio and has a 30-foot range. The device also has an integrated microphone to turn it into a speaker phone for use with Skype or other VoIP applications. The slot also secures the speaker bar to the top of a MacBook. The retail price for the Zooka is $99.95.

SpeakerCraft has just introduced its Protege TV Speaker to the masses, where it delivers audio to your ears in an extremely covert and sublime manner, thanks to it being an under-TV sound system which helps flat panel TVs sound as good as they look. Sporting powerful loudspeakers, subwoofers and DSP technology that are crammed in a single cabinet, the SpeakerCraft Protege takes mere minutes to hook up to TVs. SpeakerCraft engineers have also taken the opportunity to have the Protege TV speaker work by improving male and female vocals, while increasing higher listening levels to cater for larger rooms with the ability to throw out deeper bass. Sporting a couple of 5.25″ woofers in a tuned enclosure, our ears get to enjoy low-end bass that is long missing from vanilla flat panel TVs. (more…)

Dolby’s 64 speaker Atmos technology can be heard in Disney/Pixar’s Brave movie
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhen it comes to the audio systems used in the movie, you’re usually faced with either technology from THX or Dolby. Well if you consider yourself to be an audiophile or at least an audio enthusiast, then Disney/Pixar’s Brave animated movie might be a show worth checking out. Apart from its hilarious and touching story, it is also the first film to use Dolby’s new Atmos technology which basically allows sound designers to mix up to 128 different sound elements into 64 speakers, which supposedly will aid movies in sounding more “realistic”. The folks at IEEE Spectrum spoke to Brave’s sound designer who had this to say about Dolby’s new technology: (more…)

Accessories, iOS has them. Not many devices can boast the same rich and dazzling array of add-ons that the iPhone or iPad enjoy — from keyboards to docks, arcade cabinets to battery packs. Today’s offering? A mobile mixer. The iRig MIX from IK Multimedia, to be precise. It’s essentially a mini DJ tool, designed to work with such iGadgets, and brought to you by the same serial audio-accessorizers behind the iRig MIC Cast and AmpliTube. If you think you’ve seen this fella before, then you likely have, as this got its first glimpse of sunlight back at CES. Now it’s here for real, auditioning for your affections as if it were on “American Idol.”
While it’s easy to dismiss some of the more ambitious accessories as as trying to push the limits of iPad / iPhone functionality to the extreme, it’s also worth remembering that accessory X isn’t always about replacing object Y. No one ever bought a USB webcam thinking it’d turn them into Spielberg, now did they? But, they might have gotten one thinking it would give their PC some skills it never had before. So it’s with this short, preemptive missive in mind that we turn on the iRig MIX, plug in and rock out. Hopefully.

Whoever said that Twitter was just meant to chat with your friends in 140 characters or less in a fast and painless manner, in addition to knowing just what your entire posse is up to? Blur, the British band that is still hanging around, has wholeheartedly embraced technology to the fullest by announcing that they will debut a couple of their latest songs over a live Twitter video stream this July 2nd at 6.15pm.
Blur will perform ‘Under The Westway’ and ‘The Puritan’ then over the digital channel, where both songs were specially written for their upcoming sold-out Hyde Park gig that is happening this August 12th. It is performed live from a secret UK location so that no fans will hang around and disrupt the session, and the whole world can check out Twitter.com/blurofficial at 6.15pm for the official debut.
Will Blur be the last musician to use Twitter as a debut platform, or are they at the brink of something revolutionary? Only time and future history will tell. Hopefully there will be no Twitter outages on that day.
