Bem Outlet Speaker: Plug in Your Tunes

There are plenty of wireless speakers on the market these days, but sometimes, you just need a small speaker to deliver the right amount of sound at the right place. While outlets might not be optimally placed, this speaker takes advantage of the fact that most wireless speakers still need to be plugged in – at least to be charged.

The Bem Outlet Speaker  just plugs into a North American 110V outlet and connects with mobile devices via Bluetooth. Once your devices are within 25-feet and paired, simply hit the play button, the music will flow. The compact speaker is only sightly bigger than a juice box, so you can hide it away pretty much anywhere. It will cover up most of the outlet, so you’ll have to watch that if you use many of yours. It’s also got a USB port and 3.5mm jack for connecting wired devices.

The Bem Outlet Speaker is available now for $99.99(USD) and it comes in either black or white case options.

Samsung Vacuum Tube Soundbar ears-on

Samsung Vacuum Tube Soundbar ears-on

One thing Samsung hasn’t held back on this year at CES is displays. Big, small, curved and bendy… Samsung’s on it. But, it’s not totally forgotten the rest of your digital world, the Korean firm also knows that you sometimes need something to go underneath those screens. Enter the Vacuum Tube Soundbar (HW-F750). The company claims this is a world first — a soundbar-style speaker to feature a built-in vacuum tube, and we hunted it down to soak in its majesty. Okay, so design-wise, it’s pretty simple. One long oblong of speaker-grille, punctuated by a central block that houses the all important valves, as well as a control section underneath. You might also notice that there’s a distinct lack of wires in the picture above. This isn’t clever booth wiring, the HW-F750 has Bluetooth and works with SoundShare, which should keep cable-haters happy. That’s not the only party trick. There’s also a gyroscope sensor that takes the height, rotation and slope into consideration, and optimizes the audio accordingly. Still not convinced? Well perhaps the AirtrackON feature that powers on the soundbar when you turn on the TV will swing the deal?

On closer inspection, the simplistic design might not be a showstopper, but it’s certainly neat, and fitting (or at least with the display TV it was set up with it was). We mentioned already that there are sensors that detect its position, as you might have guess, this means you can place the soundbar in a variety of orientations to suit your home’s particular set up. There is also a display, just you don’t see it until you nudge the volume up, or change the audio source etc, as it’s set behind the casing. This creates a nice visual touch, without breaking up the aesthetic line. We already mentioned the Bluetooth connectivity, but if you do prefer to cable up… no problem as there are also a couple of HDMI ports dotted around. The Samsung rep kindly jacked up the sound for us while we were there, and while it’s tough to give it a full critique from a busy show floor, it certainly seemed loud enough, and gave the full surround system — in a glass room just to the side of it — a run for its money. So, perhaps not the ideal conditions to truly experience the effects of the valves, but a nice looking, loud sounding start for the product.

RCA’s SoundFlow Dock Throws Off the Shackles of Wireless and Tethered Connections

Wouldn’t it be grand if you could just plop your smartphone down on a speaker dock and not have to worry about attaching an adapter cable, connecting to a wireless network, or firing up Bluetooth and pairing both devices? RCA has done away with all that hassle with its new SoundFlow alarm clock that simply requires you to place your handset on top for a litte more oomph in the sound department. More »

Behringer OMNI Link, Amp, and SP5i hands-on

This year at CES, audiophile company Behringer introduced the OMNI series of AirPlay-compatible speakers and other audio equipment. Of course, these products are all about networked playback and connecting all your home’s audio together over the interwebs. We ended up getting our hands on the OMNI Link stereo receiver, the OMNI Amp amplifier, and the OMNI SP5i AirPlay speaker system.

image0003

The company made a big appearance at last year’s CES with its incredibly-oversized iPod dock, the iNuke Boom. However, this year the company launched a series of AirPlay-compatible products, and we ended up checking out the Link and the SP5i. The Link is a stereo receiver that can turn any pair of ordinary speakers into networked AirPlay-supported speakers.

The Link and Amp both look very similar from the front, and are the exact same size, but the difference between the two is mostly dependent on the connections on the back, as well as the hardware on the inside. The Link has red and white RCA audio inputs, and the Amp includes two stereo wire inputs. Both models include an ethernet port for home network connectivity, and there’s also a 1/4-inch headphone jack on the front for personal listening. The Amp features a 2 x 40W stereo amplifier for increased quality and louder music out of those low-powered speakers you have lying around.

The SP5i is the company’s flagship OMNI AirPlay speaker, and it’s an active three-way speaker system with a 6-inch subwoofer inside. It’s a fairly large speaker, and the audio certainly doesn’t sound bad. Even with the loud noise and the large crowd on the show floor, the speaker blasted away and the bass was certainly bumping.

The OMNI Link will cost $129, and the Amp will be priced at $199, while the SP5i will cost you a hefty $349. The company will have a smaller version for $249 that will come with a smaller 4-inch subwoofer.

Outdoor Technology Announces CHIPS Wireless Drop-in Audio System

outdoor Outdoor Technology Announces CHIPS Wireless Drop in Audio System Outdoor Technology has just announced a spanking new device for those who tend to ride bicycles and motorbikes in the form of CHIPS, a wireless drop-in audio system. It is said that CHIPS will be universally compatible with all helmets that have audio enabled liners. This means extreme sport enthusiasts are also not left out of the loop, as they are now able to listen to their favorite tunes and make calls without having to take their helmets off when doing so, and inadvertently, exposing themselves to unnecessary risks.

This patent pending method of delivering wireless audio to helmets can be considered to be the first of its kind, and it more or less puts to rest the question of delivering a tangle-free solution to the action sports market. Expect the CHIPS Wireless Drop-in Audio System to arrive this April in Chile, Australia and New Zealand, while all the other markets will see it this winter for $129.95 apiece. Anyone interested in picking it up?

NUU Splash Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

nuu splash NUU Splash Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker[CES 2013] Bluetooth speakers are dime a dozen, and it is almost customary for a particular gizmo to come with Bluetooth connectivity these days, otherwise it would be considered as a crime by certain quarters. Well, the portable speaker department too, has not been able to shake off this particular expectation, which is why we are faced with the NUU Splash Bluetooth speaker, and as the name suggests, it has a penchant for water, which makes perfect sense since it sports waterproof capability.

If you tend to spend plenty of time by the poolside or at the beach and absolutely love your tunes, then the NUU Splash would be the ideal portable speaker for you, although it would come highly recommended that you waterproof your streaming device as well through a case, or in the case of a notebook, you will just need to be extra careful. They don’t make waterproof notebooks yet the last time I checked.

All in all, the NUU Splash is made out of aircraft-grade aluminum, and is IP55 certified against dust and low pressure water jets, sporting a rated battery life of 10 hours play or 240 hours stand by, where you can choose from green, blue, gray, red and black colors at $99 apiece.

Krell Connect Announced

krell Krell Connect Announced[CES 2013] Krell has just announced their Krell Connect, which is a device that intends to deliver “the ultimate in high-resolution audio streaming technology.” It does not matter if you are rocking to FLAC, WAV, MP3 or WMA formats, the Krell Connect is able to play those back up to 192kHz/24-bit audio in addition to Internet radio, all never falling under Krell’s highest fidelity standards as far as possible.

Needless to say, the Krell Connect is Wi-Fi-equipped, and it will be available in two forms: digital only, or with a built-in Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) module. The latter will boast of a 32-bit ESS Sabre chipset with discrete, direct-coupled analog circuitry outputting via RCA or balanced audio outputs. As for the former (digital-only version), it will come with both coax and Toslink optical outputs.

You can also navigate through your rather well stocked audio libraries in a jiffy thanks to Connect’s integrated 3.5-inch QVGA LCD display, and as an alternative, full-featured iOS and Android apps also deliver full control on your device as long as it is within range. Other file formats supported via streaming include Ogg, WMA, and MP3, where gapless playback is made possible so that there need not be any breaks between album tracks.

Those who are interested can pick up the Krell Connect from this March onwards for $2,500 (digital only) and $3,500 (w/ Internal DAC) a pop.
