Edifier S550 Encore multimedia system delivers a blast to your living room

edifier-s550-encoreI am quite sure that those of us who are on a rather tight budget and would love to maximize the value of our money would have heard of the brand Edifier before when it comes to audio systems. This time around, the folks over at Edifier have released its latest 5.1 multimedia system that is known as the S550 Encore. The Edifier S550 Encore claims to take audio to the next level, where it will boast of a couple of 10” super bass drivers that are capable of delivering 120 Watts each, resulting in ground shaking audio that your ears and invited friends to your party would definitely appreciate.

When you merge that with the 60 Watts from each of the 5 satellites, then the Edifier S550 Encore would end up producing an astonishing 540 Watts of audio output, now how about that? The wired remote comes with a display, where it would enable full control of input selection, volume, bass and treble adjustments, surround channel adjustment in addition to a 6-level volume boost. The 6-level volume boost function would enable listeners to push the S550 Encore beyond the maximum volume, which does make us wonder why place a faux limit on the maximum volume in the first place. Both DRC and DSP have been incorporated into the S550 Encore so that distortion is kept to a minimum, making this multimedia system ideal for home theater application, gaming or simply as a plug and play audio option. An asking price of $599.99 has been slapped onto the Edifier S550 Encore if you are interested.

Bluetooth iMusic Pillow sends you to sleep with your favorite tunes

Olympus STYLUS TOUGH TG-3 lets you capture your favorite moments regardless of the weather

olympus-tg3Most of the time, we would think of digital cameras as sensitive devices, and they rightly are. After all, how many of you would not bother to cringe if you knock your digital camera against the corner of a table or the side of a wall by accident? Dropping your camera is an even worse clanger to experience, as something is bound to chip off or dent at the very best, and at the worse, you might have to purchase a whole brand new camera. Olympus understands this, which is why they have come up with the Olympus STYLUS TOUGH TG-3, where it will be able to deliver a new level of performance for the Tough series of rugged cameras, as it sports a high-speed f2.0 lens (25mm–100mm), expanded macro photography capabilities, GPS, and built-in Wi-Fi.

Of course, shooting photos under normal conditions would not be a challenge regardless of the digital camera that you use, but when the weather starts to turn foul, perhaps it is time for you to start to consider a waterproof camera, or at the very least, a weatherproof one. Case in point, the Olympus STYLUS TOUGH TG-3, where it has been specially built for it to be able to withstand extreme conditions. Just how tough is it to be able to live up to its namesake? Well, this camera happens to be freezeproof to -10℃ (14°F), waterproof to 50 feet (15 m), shockproof from seven feet (2.1 m), crushproof to 220 pounds (100 kgf) and dustproof.

As for its performance, you need not fret, since it will come with a high-speed f2.0–4.9, 4.5–8.0mm (25mm–100mm) wide-aperture lens that will work in tandem with its TruePic VII image processor, which is the same one that is found in Olympus’ award-winning OM-D series of interchangeable lens cameras, in addition to a 16.0 megapixel backlit CMOS sensor that allows it to capture images with minimal noise, even in low-light situations. Sounds impressive enough for those who live an active outdoor lifestyle, right?

Smartphone Induction Speaker wakes you up with alarm clock function

smartphone-induction-chargerIt does seem as though we are moving slowly but surely in the direction where everything comes together, doesn’t it? I am talking about the world of consumer electronics here. Back in the day, one had to carry a mobile phone to make and receive both calls and text messages, while there is the PDA for us to electronically keep tabs of our appointments and such, with a MP3 player or portable media player to handle our on-the-go entertainment needs, and a digital camera to snap photos for memories in the years ahead. Fast forward to this decade, and a smartphone is able to do all of that, and then some. However, most smartphone speakers aren’t all that great to begin with, which is where the $49.99 Smartphone Induction Speaker comes in.

Basically, the Smartphone Induction Speaker with an alarm clock function will be able to amplify audio playback from your iPhone, Galaxy or other Android smartphone, is fully rechargeable, and does not require any kind of prior setup so that you can get started right away. Not only that, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections are not required – all that you need to do is place your smartphone on top of it, and play whatever tunes your ears fancy. Music will be amplified across an entire room, thanks to a pair of high-quality 2-watt speakers and a digital clock with alarm. A full charge would enable it to handle up to 15 hours of non-stop playback.

STREAMZ smart headphones launches Kickstarter campaign

freely-streamzNot all headphones are created equal, and the very idea of STREAMZ happens to be an extremely audacious one. I am referring to this breakthrough smart headphones which intends to kiss goodbye to the likes of toting around a separate music player, as the STREAMZ smart headphones will be able to make use of a built-in WiFi and Bluetooth Android Music Player, and it has just seen its Kickstarter campaign launch this week.

Anytime from now until May 1, backers will be able to place a pre-order for their STREAMZ that will come with up to 36GBs of built-in storage, a 48kHZ/16 bit Digital Analog Converter (DAC), and a microphone that supports Google Voice activated commands including the ability to search for music, skip tracks to the desired one, volume control, a selection of locally stored music or online music services such as Pandora or Spotify, and a slew of other functions that you never thought were possible before. Not only that, there will also be an Android App developer’s kit that is also available in a Kickstarter bundle so that more software developers will be encouraged to think up of unique new Apps for STREAMZ.

While majority of the smartphones and mobile music players out there do feature sub-par DACs and amplifiers, subjecting listeners to compromise on sound quality for convenience, the STREAMZ certainly looks in the opposite direction, letting music lovers enjoy pure, uncompressed high fidelity audio regardless of where they are with a headset that features a built-in music player, storage, DAC, amp, Bluetooth and WiFi. STREAMZ also happens to be the first headphone of its kind that can store and autonomously play 44 kHz/16 bit CD quality music in formats including FLAC, ALAC, WAV and music from the soon to be released PONO music store.

Pre-orders for STREAMZ will start from $299, which is a $200 discount from the expected recommended retail price for the 4GB model, although there will be 24GB and 36GB models that retail for $349 and $549, respectively, both saving you three Benjamins from the expected MSRP.

Fire TV – Amazon’s New Set Top Box!

AmazonFireTV_Side_Popcorn

Check out the newest addition to the set top box movement, Fire TV. Although I’m fairly certain “set top box” is an antiquated term, since there’s precious little you can put on top of most TV’s these days. Then again, the “under the TV,  on the counter box” doesn’t work either. So we’ll just have to work with what we have.

Fire TV is a tiny box that simply plugs into your existing HDTV and opens the door to a whole new world of entertainment options. If you have yet to enjoy the offerings of Netflix, Amazon Prime’s Instant Video, Hulu, and a host of other streaming and subscription services, you are way behind the times. There are folks that will tell you, these boxes are likely to become the future of TV.

Two things that set Fire TV apart from Boxee, Roku and other streaming media units is its ability to actually predict what movies and TV episodes you will want to watch and then, gets them ready to stream instantly. So, no more anxious waiting for videos to buffer, and, it has a voice search that actually works! You can forget about those horrible little remotes that make you painfully enter titles one letter at a time off an on-screen alphabet grid. With your new Fire TV, just just say the name of what you want into your remote, and get your popcorn.

Fire TV is great for gaming, photos, videos, and music, helps parents limit screen time for their kids, mirrors your tablet on TV, and comes in a tiny, 99 dollar package. If you would like to enter home entertainment’s new age, go check out Fire TV, available starting today, at amazon.com.

xmini-weFor those of you out there who absolutely cannot live without music, and need to have some sort of tunes playing in the background, be it over a pair of headphones or via a speaker, then it might do you some good to actually invest in a decent portable speaker One that would fit in line with your hectic traveling lifestyle, all the while delivering audio quality that is above the par, surprising even naysayers and the like. The $39.99 X-Mini WE might not look like much at first glance, but that would be making the mistake of judging the proverbial book by its cover.

In fact, this next generation of X-Mini speakers happens to be a portable Bluetooth micro speaker that can kick some serious audio butt, as it boasts of connectivity options that keep up with the times and then some such as Bluetooth 3.0 as well as NFC. Swann HD RemoteCam lets you make video recordings discreetly

hd-remotecamSwann Security is no stranger when it comes to security monitoring, and this time around, they have yet another device that will cater to those who would love to perform a covert operation from time to time. I am referring to the HD RemoteCam, which is the latest device from their range of covert recording devices. The HD RemoteCam was specially designed to look like that of a standard issue car remote complete with a keychain to boot, as you go about your business discreetly recording your target in high definition glory, not to mention it being full well capable of snapping photos as well as capturing audio with but a single push of a button. Once done, you can even opt to share what was recorded onto different websites.

The HD RemoteCam itself would come with an integrated microphone as well as a fixed focus lens which is capable of capturing full color, high definition 1280x720p AVI video in addition to still photos (at 1600 x 1200 pixels resolution). In order to snap a photo, just press the record button quickly and the lens will get the job done, and if you prefer to get a video recording of whatever’s happening at that point in time, then you can always hold the button to record video. Doing so would allow the HD RemoteCam to start shooting video, where it will also continue to do so until you press the very same button again.

The presence of an LED light would inform you that the power is turned on, but whenever you perform a video recording session, this very same LED light would be turned off in order to let you discreetly go about your business without letting your cover slip. Each HD RemoteCam will arrive with a 2GB microSD memory card to help you get started right out of the box, but that is a paltry amount in this day and age, leaving you with just 20 minutes of video. For those who want to maximize their recording time, it would be better to purchase your very own memory card, especially those that can go all the way to 32GB.

Once the recording is complete, just transfer the relevant videos and photos to your computer via USB, with the option to share them on the likes of Facebook and YouTube. The $69.99 HD RemoteCam would have a recording time of 60 minutes per full battery charge.

The ATH-AX5iS SonicFuel Over-Ear Headphones can make big sounds from tiny devices

Audiotechnica
When you can hear every note and word of a song, it’s easy to be immersed in it. Hearing muffled versions of our tunes when our headphones or ear buds crap out only serves to make us a tad crazy. If you’re accustomed to constant quality sound like what you would get out of your home computer setup, then you know how annoying ear buds constantly falling out or putting themselves in awkward positions in your ear can be.

If you prefer over-ear headphones, then why subject yourself to anything other than that just because you’re using your smartphone? The ATH-AX5iS SonicFuel Over-Ear Heaphones can make your daily music dosage all the better. These were meant for smartphones, and have 40mm drivers that can pack a decent punch. These have cushy earpads, and a headband which is said to be comfortable for extended wear. The cord is flat, which somehow means tangle-free (if it’s a cord, it will find a way to tangle itself).

As these are meant for mobile devices, they needed to have a more portable aspect to them, so the earcups are capable of folding flat, and this set comes with a carrying case. They are made of ABS plastic with aluminum accents, and are available in black or gun-metal grey. There is an in-line microphone, as well as volume and track controls so you can take calls in between jamming out. These will cost you around $90, but won’t be available until this summer.
