Coolest Gadgets Goes Tailgating

Football season is here! College kicked off, NFL follows suit this week. And you need to ensure that you are properly prepared for tailgating. So whether in the stadium parking lot  or in your own driveway get your gadget on with these football must haves.

You Grill, iGrill®, We All Grill

You are dubbed the grill master at this week’s game. Bummer, now you must remain near the grill, keeping a constant eye on the burgers and dogs. Sort of ruins the afternoon. Why let it interfere with playing touch football or chatting up that cute blonde? Let iGrill be your sous chef.

iGrill by iDevice, provides a dual probe, easy to read thermometer. This durable tailgate must can be used as a stand-alone device. But if that isn’t enough then download the iGrill app from the iTunes store. Using Bluetooth the iGrill can then communicate with your app and clue you in when your meat is ready. With a 200 foot range there is plenty of room to escape the grill but not overcook the protein. Alert yourself when a temperature or time is reached. The app includes multiple views to cover each probe, and even recipes. Via Amazon, the $79.95 investment seems small in comparison to the amount of meat you could burn without this gauge.

Hone Your Bartending Knowledge

Tailgaters and tailgate parties are always on a quest for the drink of the day. This handy deck of coasters will keep you and your bartender inspired. Cocktail Challenge provides a set of 30 mats with different cocktails. Drinks vary in difficulty, class, amount of alcohol and number of ingredients. Use them for inspiration. Or if your bar is fully stocked use it as a game. See who can create the tastiest, classiest (or most classless) concoction. For just £7.50 at Suck UK, they provide easy inspiration for your cocktail of the day or to pose a challenge to any novice bartender.

Ultimate Beer Pong Set

Sure you may have a classic beer pong table with your team’s logo emblazoned on it for your tailgate parties. But do you have the proper gaming equipment? Face it, a long game of beer pong makes for warm beer on a warm afternoon. Yuck. The N-Ice Rack Freezable Beer Pong Rack Set is the perfect companion to your beer pong table. Included are two fillable and sealable racks. Fill the racks with water, freeze and you are armed for the day. The glasses you place on it will have a nice chill below them. Also included are 3 balls. And all of this is just $26.34 on Amazon. So don’t forget to keep your penalty beers cold!

Tunes for the Tailgate

No tailgate party is complete without music. Whether socializing or throwing the football around, tunes help set the mood. But no one really wants to lug speakers around or find power.  And you certainly don’t want to be outdone by the party next to you. So the best Portable Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Speaker provides a perfect solution. Not only will it put up with the elements, it will wirelessly play for 10 hours (3 hour charge). Using a 41 channel transmitter and radio band to find your signal source transmitter, it will never find interference from other devices.  The 480’ range means you can leave your transmitter and music player in the car or your pocket. And the digital amplifier and down firing subwoofer will give you the best sound in the parking lot. Though $699.95, Hammacher Schlemmer’s testing and backing confirm the quality sound and performance of the speaker. Rest assured, with this unit your tailgate will have the best tunes at the game.

Cassette To iPod Converter

I am not quite sure just how many of you out there still carry your music around – no, let me rephrase, have a collection of music in cassette form since the humble cassette-based Sony Walkmans have all but died for a long, long time already (in technology’s timeframe, time is relatively short). Well, assuming you have some old classics that have yet to make their way to the digital format even after you have spent years scouring the Internet for it (without any CDs available, either), there is some hope left.

You need not depend on Obi Wan Kenobi, but you can surely check out the $79.95 Cassette To iPod Converter which will be able to convert audio tape cassettes into MP3 files directly. Of course, this digitized format from an analog source would mean you will also get all the hisses and pops, but that is part of the package, and if you have a remote interest in cleaning up digital audio files, then you would not mind converting your entire cassette collection. All converted audio will be stashed away on the docked iPhone or iPod touch, as long as there is adequate storage space, that is. A couple of AA batteries power the Cassette To iPod Converter.

Meb Keflezighi Edition Sony Walkman W Series arrive at Walmart stores next month

If you happen to be a frequent shopper at Walmart, and more or less know everything that America’s superstore carries by heart, then you would notice that from next month onwards, there is a brand new version of the Sony Walkman W Series. I am referring to the Meb Keflezighi edition of this particular Walkman family, as it was developed in conjunction with Meb Keflezighi’s 4th place finish in the recently concluded 2012 Olympic marathon. What’s so special about the Meb Keflezighi edition Sony Walkman W Series? Read on to find out!

Meb Keflezighi is no doubt an American distance running hero, although he did not manage to pick up a medal at this year’s Olympics, he did win silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics and ended up tops at the 2009 New York City Marathon. The Meb Keflezighi Edition Walkman W Series reflects his spirit, where it was also specially developed in order to invigorate his marathon training program in addition to catering for the regimens of runners as well as health and fitness enthusiasts worldwide.

This special edition of the Walkman W Series is a wire-free digital music player that was especially designed to make using it as convenient and comfortable as possible for the user, whether one is pounding the pavement, or hitting the treadmill at the local gym. It boasts of water-resistant technology that makes sure the buckets of sweat it encounters during your exercise session as well as intense weather conditions are shrugged off.

This digital music player comes with 2GB of storage space, and when you average that out, we are looking at around 470 songs, in addition to its availability in a special-edition orange model. Similar to the rest of the Walkman W Series, the Meb Keflezighi edition will be accompanied by Content Transfer software that enables users to drag and drop music files from iTunes for Windows, Windows Media Player or Windows Explorer (DRM free content only) in a snap. You can also charge it quickly, where three minutes of charge time translates to an hour of playback, while a full battery life delivers up to 8 hours of non-stop music.

The Meb Keflezighi Edition Walkman W Series will retail for $69.99 a pop if you are interested.

MorphCase turns iPod touch into a smartphone

When the iPhone and the iPod touch were first introduced to the masses half a decade ago, many people figured out that the iPod touch was the iPhone – sans the phone part, of course. Well, the iPhone went on to be a huge success around the globe since then, and the iPod touch, well, it continued to reign as the top portable media player in the market, but over time, you could be sure that smartphones took over the portable media player’s mantle as a to-go entertainment device of choice for the masses. Well, if you happen to own an iPod touch, how about giving it a new lease of life with Dexterity’s MorphCase? This unique case is capable of transforming the humble iPod touch into a Wi-Fi mobile phone – and you do not even need a headset or a Bluetooth device to boot. Let us see how this is achieved in the extended post.

For starters, the MorphCase will play nice with the second, third and fourth generations of the iPod touch, where it will make good use of the audio jack input with any voice over IP (VoIP) app, hence eliminating the need for pesky external wiring or a headset. In fact, it will also come with a built-in speaker that is located at the top complete with a microphone at the bottom, similar to how a traditional phone works.

I guess you can say that the composition of “smart” in this “smartphone” is far more than that of a “phone”, but at least you are still able to make a call with a data connection. After all, many people have fallen on economically difficult times, hence it makes perfect sense to examine one’s spending habits and cutting down on paying for multiple cell phones, data plans, usage fees and monthly cellular bills.

The MorphCase will take advantage of any Wi-Fi hotspots around, and once connected, you can use an app like Skype (make sure you have credits inside if you want to call a mobile or landline number!) to keep in touch with the rest of the world. Color choices for the MorphCase include Black Fury, White Lightning and Limited Edition Chromax, retailing for $49.99 a pop although pre-orders are slightly cheaper at $35.

Backlights Before Bed – A No No?

If you are like me bedtime means check the email once more, maybe play a game or read on a tablet. But it typically involves an electronic device. Researchers at Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute produced a report stating that…yep, electronic light before bed negatively impacts our sleep. Probably not a total shocker, but the logic as to why is interesting.

Melatonin, the hormone that occurs naturally in all of us, regulates our waking and sleeping patterns. Light leads to a decrease in melatonin – meaning it is time to be awake. Conversely darkness elevates our melatonin levels which makes us sleepy. Back in the caveman days when the sun went down, melatonin levels went up and they slept through the night. With the invention of fire and electric light our patterns began to change. Basically, light is robbing us of natural darkness meaning less melatonin and less desire to fall sleep.

So what is a technology guru supposed to do? The study states that exposure to backlit devices 2 hours before bed would impact melatonin production. If you must use your device they recommend dimming them. Let’s face it. The logic is there. So challenge yourself and those in your life. And for the children? Better stop them a couple hours before bed and give them a fighting chance at a good night’s rest.

Even Radios are Smart

Our sources of music definitely vary. Sometimes it’s our personal collection, sometimes it’s streaming a radio station, sometimes it’s a service like Pandora® or Spotify®. Moving back and forth between devices just to hear what you want is a pain! The time has come for a unified interface, regardless of the source.

Logitech, well known for reliable devices, launched their new line of Logitech UE™ products. The line is targeted to music fans wanting quality sound wherever they go. The Logitech UE Smart Radio provides a unified source to control your tunes, no matter the source. Power the unit on, connect to your wi-fi and the single interface allows you to access computer-stored music, online stations or music services. Save your favorite stations and playlists for one-touch access. And with an add-on app (iOS or Android) your tablet or phone becomes a master controller to access all your music sources. Take the radio on the go or in the back yard too. A rechargeable battery means up to 6 hours of wire-free playback.  The units, announced recently, are not on the market yet but expected to retail for $179.99. Preorders are being taken on Logitech’s website.

So more debate over where your music will come from. Now access them easily with the UE Smart Radio. Who says we have to use different devices to access our tunes? Not Logitech!

Boombotix Bluetooth Street Speaker

Do you remember the singer Shaggy with his mega hit many years ago, Mr. Bombastic? Well, that certainly set off a trend in speak-nging (speaking/singing, you heard it here first!), and I guess that “better late than never” applies to the Boombotix Bluetooth Street Speaker. The Gunmetal Grey and Purplex Purple colors will retail for £49.99, while those who want something different can settle for the Camouflage and Carbon Fiber make up which will cost you 10 quid more, that is £59.99. So, what can the Boombotix Bluetooth Street Speaker deliver in terms of performance?

Touted to fuse urban style with quality audio, the Boombotix Street Speaker relies on Bluetooth connectivity to hook up to your media playback devices. You can clip it to your belt, slip it in a bag or hook it up to a bike, and voila – here you are, a veritable, walking library of tunes that you can share with the rest of the world. Of course, who are we to stop you from just leaving it perched on your desk? That’d be defeating the purpose of its existence though, as if you settle for the latter, you might as well purchase a more decent set of desktop speakers.

Offering up to 8 hours of non-stop audio playback, the battery requires approximately a full hour to recharge. It is also showerproof, and despite being wireless, an aux input is there just in case you have non-Bluetooth devices that want to share the music love.

Edifier Sound To Go PLUS portable all-in-one speaker system

Don’t you think that the boombox is so 1980s? Well, if you happen to think along that train of thought, and figured out that the new millennium obviously needs something far more powerful when you want to share your favorite rockin’ tunes (or if you want to carry out a flash mob somewhere with wicked dance moves), then you would obviously need some sort of highly portable and yet powerful audio system.

Now, with the Edifier Sound To Go PLUS portable all-in-one speaker system, I am quite sure that it will not be able to fill up the entire hall with sound, and neither is it any match for noise on the road, but at least in smaller, more intimate enclosed areas, it is able to pull its own weight and pack quite the aural punch as well. Why not take a look at the Edifier Sound To Go PLUS portable all-in-one speaker system in the extended post and let us know what you think about it after that?

The Edifier Sound To Go PLUS portable all-in-one speaker system was specially designed as an all-in-one micro speaker with a rechargeable Lithium Battery within. The presence of an auxiliary input will allow you to hook it up to multiple host devices including smartphones other MP3 enabled device. The Sound To Go PLUS itself is a self-contained portable mini speaker system which will deliver exceptional audio performance above and beyond any integrated laptop or tablet speaker, and is ideal for home, business and travel use.

Expect to enjoy up to 10 hours of non-stop audio playback with Sound To Go PLUS, where you can juice up the Lithium Ion battery thanks to the included USB cable. Each $49.99 purchase will be accompanied by a soft protective carrying pouch for safe transportation wherever you are.

Green and Gadget-y

Yep, another unique docking station. The ideas never end. And they keep getting better. As electronic fanatics we are constantly looking for something new. And greenery is never a bad addition to our environment.

Meet the Bloombox. It is a one of a kind docking station providing two major differences. First, it amplifies acoustics by 30%, the designers claim. Save on the volume! Secondly, they have designed the unit to contain a customizable planter for small greenery. Designed by Nicholas Hyde and Brennan Conroy, it is currently listed on Kickstarter for a $50 pledge which funds the mold for production and gets you a unit once produced. They are more than halfway to their fundraising goal to make Bloombox a reality. It is expected to retail for $20 once available (hopefully later this year). Forewarning, it will require use of your own iPhone cord.

Think about it. Aesthetically and audiologically it would be a nice addition to any room. And you can add foliage to make it NOT look like another piece of electronic equipment. So get behind a unique take on a docking station and give that little greenery a place to live. Also, it would make a perfect holiday gift for the iPhone user that wants a slightly little different home for their device.
