BMW recalls over half a million cars over battery cable connector

BMW has recalled almost 570,000 cars due to an issue with one of the battery cable connectors, which is prone to failure and could result in a perma-stalled vehicle. The failure results from gradual degradation, which is why the earliest vehicle models being recalled go back to 2007. You can check out which models and years are included on the list after the jump.

Also affected by the problem is one terminal in the fuse box, which can also degrade and fail. When this happens, the connection between the battery located in the car’s trunk will no longer be connected to the fuse box, causing the engine to suddenly stall. According to the manufacturer, the problem has resulted in one small crash in Canada, but no one was hurt.

The 3-Series, 1-Series, and the Z4 have been recalled. In the 3-Series, coupes, wagons, and convertibles from 2007 to 2011 are affected, while the 1-Series cars span 2008 to 2012. The sleek Z4 sportscar, meanwhile, has affected years from 2009 to 2011. The United States is home to most of the affected vehicles at 504,000, while Canada has the rest at 65,000.

Drivers who have one of the affected models will receive a notification from BMW starting next month. When notified, the driver can take their vehicle to the nearest dealer, where the battery cable connector will be replaced for free. Those who have questions about the issue can contact BMW at 800-525-7417.

2014 Chevrolet SS unveiled, manual transmission is MIA

General Motors unveiled late last night the 2014 Chevrolet SS, which just so happens to be Chevrolet’s first rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in 17 years. Of course, it’s essentially the same car as Holden’s Commodore SS V in Australia, but us Americans will be able to get in on the action thanks to Chevrolet (Holden and Chevrolet are both owned by General Motors).

2014 Chevrolet SS

The reveal of the new 2014 SS may not garner as much attention as the 2014 Corvette did last month, but the new SS should be able to turn some heads. However, unlike its Holden brethren, the new SS doesn’t come with a true manual transmission, and instead packs a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters that enable manual shifting in a way.

2014 Chevrolet SS

As far as the motor is concerned, the 2014 SS packs a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine (the same one used in the 2013 Corvette), and boasts 415 horsepower with 415 pound-feet of torque. This will allow drivers to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in “about 5 seconds,” according to GM. So, while the missing manual transmission is a bummer, the high-performance engine definitely makes up for it.

The 2014 SS is also replacing the Impala as GM’s official NASCAR vehicle starting this year, with the first race of the season, the Daytona 500, taking place this weekend. The company actually unveiled the new car at Daytona International Speedway in conjunction with the season-opening race. The Chevrolet Impala has been in the NASCAR circuit since 2007 when it replaced the Monte Carlo.

Chrysler forced to recall over 370,000 vehicles due to fastener problem

Chrysler recalled 370,297 SUVs and trucks today due to an issue with a loose fastener, something that has caused 15 accidents. The recall affects vehicles in the United States, Canada, and Mexico primarily, with a small amount being located elsewhere globally. Those with the affected vehicles will get a retainer installed for free to correct the problem.

ram 1500

The recall breaks down to 278,222 SUVS and trucks in the United States, 23,767 in Mexico, 63,321 in Canada, and 4,987 elsewhere. The vehicles affected include Ram 1500 pickup trucks from 2009 to 2012, Chrysler Aspen 2009 models, Dodge Durango 2009 models, and Dodge Dakota trucks from 2009 to 2011. Although 15 accidents have happened, Chrysler says there are no reports of anyone being hurt.

According to the manufacturer, these vehicles have a fastener in the rear axle prone to loosening over time, eventually causing it to fail. When this happens, the axle could lock and result in a crash. Those who own one of the possibly affected vehicles will be notified by Chrysler and will have a retainer installed free of charge to fix the issue.

This follows a recall Chrysler announced late last year, also concerning Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota vehicles. That recall was for approximately 44,000 trucks and SUVs that were affected by the same loose fastener issue. Then, in November, Chrysler recalled nearly 745,000 Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokees because of problems with the airbags.

NYT Tesla Model S was completely dead, according to towing company

It’s been an eventful couple of days for Tesla Motors, in which the New York Times gave the company’s new car, the Model S, a bad review because the car died prematurely. However, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk says otherwise, noting that the battery wasn’t completely dead, but according to the towing company that was called out to tow the new car, the battery was, indeed, completely dead.

tesla-model-s-580x416

However, an anonymous source that claims to have access to the data logs of the car says that the car’s battery had enough juice to go another five miles or so, but the smaller 12V battery that powers accessories and such (and which gets its power from the main battery) ended up shutting down. When the NYT reviewer pulled into the service station, he ended up turning off the car, which was apparently something he wasn’t supposed to do.

However, if the reviewer was told not to turn the car off, then this whole fiasco may end up being his mistake, but if Tesla said nothing of the sort, the blame could fall on the company. So, essentially, neither Telsa or the reviewer are right, but neither of them are also wrong. It seems it’ll come down to what information Tesla gave the reviewer during the briefing.

While the tow truck driver hasn’t commented directly on the situation, dispatch at the towing company reports that the car’s battery pack was completely drained, and the tow truck driver was actually on the phone with a Tesla employee trying to figure out how to get the Model S onto the flatbed towing truck because the car was completely immovable due to the parking brake being inoperable.

NYC mayor calls for 10,000 EV charging stations within 7 years

In an effort to bolster the city’s friendliness towards electric vehicles, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is calling for 10,000 charging stations all across the city by 2019. Bloomberg mentioned the goal during his last State of the City address today, and he’s asking the city council to require landlords to make at least 20% of new parking spaces equipped for electric vehicles.

chargepoint-sg

Currently, New York City has 100 public charging stations and 120 stations for the city’s own fleet of electric vehicles. Under this new proposal from Bloomberg, 30 more stations would be added for government electric vehicles. Of course, the effort will no doubt run into some hurdles, thanks to building codes, permits, and negotiating.

However, other major cities around the US are joining on adding charging stations throughout their areas. San Francisco and Texas are adding charging stations, and the west coast is also seeing an increase in places to charge up electric vehicles. Plus, Tesla is working to add charging stations along the east and west coast, and will eventually add some in other places around the US.

Under the mayor’s new proposal, New York City would also conduct testing of curbside charging that would be able to fill batteries in just 30 minutes, as opposed to the traditional few hours that it normally takes. The testing would involve two charging stations in the city that would be able to charge vehicles over lunch. Here’s to hoping that, within seven years, we’ll see a charging station on every corner.

JD Power releases 2013 dependability study, shows improvements in reliability

JD Power and Associates has released its 2013 dependability report, which shows that the reliability of three-year-old cars has improved over last year. This is the 24th year straight that the organization has released its dependability report, which looks at the reported problems per 100 cars. Dependability has jumped 5-percent over 2012.

accord

According to the study, 2010 models that were new or redesigned averaged a PP100 score of 116, a better score than last year’s 133, which concerned 2009 models. Refreshed 2010 models, which J.D. Power states are models with only slight changes, had the best PP100 score at 111. Refreshed 2010 models, which J.D. Power states are models with only slight changes, had the best PP100 score at 111. Tallying it all up, the overall dependability score for the year was 126, a 5-percent improvement over 2012′s overall score of 132.

This is the lowest PP100 rating that has ever been given over the course of J.D Power’s dependability reports. Out of the brands looked at in the report, 21 out of 31 showed an improvement over last year, with domestic models beating out imports just a tad. Overall, three-year cars are more reliable than ever, and drivers should feel confident driving them.

Said J.D. Power’s Vice President David Sargent had this to say: “There is a perception that all-new models, or models that undergo a major redesign, are more problematic than carryover models. Data from the 2013 VDS suggests that this is not the case. The rapid improvement in fundamental vehicle dependability each year is more than offsetting any initial glitches that all-new or redesigned models may have.”

Chevrolet MyLink gains Siri integration today in 2013 Sonic and Spark

Starting today, those of you with a Chevrolet Sonic or a Chevrolet Spark working with Chevrolet MyLink with your iPhone will be able to work with Siri eyes-free integration. This update takes on what was promised back in November of last year and what we got to see with our own eyes that same month in an early preview, making it real for real-world vehicle owners. With Siri integration, users will be able to connect their iPhone (any model that works with Siri natively) completely wirelessly and jump on in to Eyes Free mode.

siri

Both the Chevrolet Sonic and Spark allow their MyLink system to attach itself to your iPhone via Bluetooth. From there you’re using your steering wheel voice activation button to notify Siri you’d like to make a command. This button is a toggle switch, meaning you can press once to start a session with Siri, then press again to stop your chat.

With this connection, you’ll be able to access your phone’s calendar and make appointments on the fly, make voice calls, access your contacts, and play music. You’re able to instantly switch sources for your music between AM/FM/XM radio to iPod mode for music from your iTunes library. All of this is done while the display of your phone is kept in sleep mode automatically so you’re not distracted by it constantly flickering on and off when you chat – makes sense!

For those of you that own a 2013 Chevrolet Spark or a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic already, you’ll be able to upgrade your MyLink radio for Siri integration starting in March. All vehicle purchases made after this point will have the upgrade right out of the box. If you’d like to connect to MyLink with your iPad, you can do so, but you do need an internet connection if you’d like to use Siri – keep that in mind!

FCC Wifi expansion sees slight Auto Industry hold-up

This week the FCC’s proposal for opening up a new large bit of spectrum in the USA reserved for wifi internet having some car trouble. The auto industry – via the Transportation Society of America (ITSA) has sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission asking them to to heed their warning. Their warning, in this case, was that these new wifi networks could potentially interfere with vehicle-to-vehicle communications networks coming in the near future.

PB279605-siri-sonic--580x326

This call to action (or call to stop action, as it were), comes after FCC Chairman Julius Genachoski spoke up at CES 2013 about cracking open unlicensed spectrum for a speed boost in wireless internet across the USA. It was then that Genachowski let it be known that this move would “free up a substantial amount of spectrum for wifi to relieve wifi congestion and improve wifi speeds” across the country – conferences, airports, and homes included.

Image above via SlashGear Chevrolet Sonic post about Siri integration and other wireless-related technologies therein. Slightly different from what the future holds with car-to-car communications.

The FCC’s plan includes a clearing of 195 MHz of spectrum in the 5GHz band to be used by wifi networks exclusively. The ITSA has spoken up this week with a note that their future plans for a highly secure wireless technology connecting network-ready cars could be interfered with by the FCC’s new move. This technology would allow cars to get information about their speed, acceleration, breaking, trajectories, and destinations to allow them better knowledge on how they’ll be getting where they’re going.

Instead of asking that this wifi expansion be stopped before its started, the auto group has asked that the FCC put safeguards in place to guarantee their future networks would not be hindered in any way. If the two sets of wireless technology did cross over in one way or another, the auto industry would be on the short end of the stick. Any sign of safety being at risk in vehicles using this up and coming short-range technology would be a big boon for the whole collection of auto makers hoping to make usage widespread.

The Intelligent Transportation Society of America is made up of members such as Chrysler, Hyundai, and Mercedes-Benz – not to mention AAA. This should be an interesting battle (or kind, gentle, measured talk between friends) that you’ll want to follow!

Fiat releases Alfa Romeo 4C sports car pictures and specs

Fiat is set to launch its Alfa Romeo 4C sports car later this year, but until then, the manufacturer has released three pictures of the attractive vehicle, along with its specs. The sports car will be shown off at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but until then, enthusiasts can get an eye-full of the car in the released pictures, which we have available after the jump.

alfa-romeo-4c-top-down

Although none of the numbers are final and could end up changing by the time the final vehicle rolls around, the Alfa Romeo 4C is said to get about 235bhp with from its 4-cylinder 1750 Turbo Petrol innards. Likewise, the car is said to have a power-to-weight ratio of 4 kilograms/horsepower, which Recombu reports at being about 4.5 seconds from 0 to 62mph.

The car tries to strike a balance between being fuel efficient and fast, offering dual continuous-variable valve timing, direct gas injection, and a so called “scavenging control system.” The engine has torque up to 1,400rpm, and there’s an Alfa TCT auto transmission, which allows for manual shifting via paddles behind the wheel, but not traditional manual transmission driving.

Much like a camera features image presets, the Alfa Romeo 4C will feature driving presets that they driver can toggle through for different driving experiences: Natural, All-Weather, Dynamic, and Race, the last of which is new. The car will be priced at about £35,500/$55,700USD, although the price is also subject to change. As the release date for the vehicle nears, more final numbers will be released, including both specs and pricing.
