The 10 Best Houses of the Year

It’s architecture awards seasons right now, with honors and medals being doled out with what seems like daily regularity. Thankfully, the AIA’s 2014 Housing Awards breaks up the march of zillion-dollar projects with something a little more real: Places where normal humans actually live.

Shigeru Ban Wins the Pritzker Prize, Architecture's Highest Honor

The Pritzker Prize is a little bit like the Oscars of architecture: It usually ends up being a chance for everyone to air their complaints about the industry. But every so often, there’s a real cause for celebration—such is the case today, when the jury announced that Japanese architect Shigeru Ban would become 2014’s recipient.

YouTube Music Awards hit NYC Nov. 3, blend mainstream artists and internet stars (video)

YouTube Music Awards take place Nov 3rd, blend mainstream artists and internet stars

The alternate reality of Youtube — where locally unknown but internet famous entertainers with millions of subscribers grab a spot next to widely recognizable mainstream artists — meets the real world November 3rd with the first ever YouTube Music Awards. Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Arcade Fire are some of the names you’ll recognize from TV and radio that will be there, along with YouTube channel favorites like CDZA and Lindsey Stirling. Spike Jonze is penciled in to serve as creative director and actor Jason Schwartzman will host, while VICE and Sunset Entertainment drop in as executive producers. Since YouTube is where many people go to check out music and find the newest artists (MTV is for scripted shows and reality TV of… varying quality), that it would launch its own live event seems almost inevitable.

The show itself comes to you from NYC, but musical collaborations will be beamed in from locales around the globe including Seoul (so, that means Psy is going to show up), Moscow, London and Rio. Nominations for the awards open October 17th, and the site is calling on viewers to judge contributions from the past year to determine who will be the winner.

Netflix snags 14 primetime Emmy nominations, mostly for House of Cards

Netflix snags 14 primetime Emmy nominations, mostly for House of Cards

Netflix’s push into original content has received its latest positive feedback from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, netting 14 nominations for the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Most of those went to standout series House of Cards, which was nominated for Most Outstanding Drama, with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright nominated for outstanding lead actor and actress awards. The fourth season of Arrested Development also received recognition with three nominations, while Hemlock Grove is on the list for two. Netflix will need to launch a few more hits if it wants to pass other players in the entertainment space (HBO’s Game of Thrones received 16 nominations by itself while the network totaled 108, for example), but with these first-ever nominations for streaming content, it’s off to a good start.

Ubergizmo’s Best of MWC 2013

Ubergizmos Best of MWC 2013

Mobile World Congress is over and we have to say that it was our best MWC yet. The new venue is awesome and the level of organization is well above what we experienced in previous years. It’s not that last year’s Mobil World Congress was poor, but the space was really too tight, and the infrastructure was not able to sustain how big the show had become. Now, we worry less about Internet Connectivity (to a point…) and can pay more attention to the upcoming mobile technologies for 2013. Speaking of which, we have spotted a number of devices and technologies worthy of an Ubergizmo “Best of MWC” Award. Here is the list, in no particular order: (more…)

Grammy Awards 2013 ads see Google and Microsoft go head-to… foot (video)

Grammy Awards 2013 ads see Google and Microsoft go headto foot video

This year’s Grammy Awards weren’t as packed with gadget advertising — gadvertising* — as the Super Bowl, but Microsoft and Google still coughed up to hawk their wares. The former wanted to demonstrate the productivity chops of the Surface Pro with a commercial that implies the device will cause your employees to breakdance involuntarily. Google, on the other hand, wanted to show off the powers of the Nexus 4 and Google Now to help you distinguish between fish and vegetables, in case the smell isn’t enough. Curious to know more? We’ve stashed the clips after the break.

* A term we just invented. Hollywood, call us.
