Tron Light Cycle VR Game: Enter the Grid

We can’t enter the digital world like the Flynns did just yet, but thanks to the Oculus Rift, you may be able to experience what it’s like to duke it out in a light cycle. Custom video game machine maker Luis Sobral aka The Arcade Man made an arcade game featuring Tron’s famous vehicles based on the virtual reality headset.

Luis calls his project RiftCycles, a game where players take part in an “immersive virtual reality light cycle battle, fighting in an arena with their bikes until “deresolution”.” To make the experience more authentic, Luis also built two light cycle models out of cardboard and metal for players to ride on.

Watch out for CLU and head to Luis’ website for more on RiftCycles.

Adventure Time Grass Sword Replica: I’m Cool with That

If you watch Adventure Time, you know that Finn the Human has a cool sword made of grass. When he got it, he could not get it off his arm. The grass just wrapped itself around his hand. It was a trap set by the Grassy Wizard. Here is a real life prop of the sword that looks just as cool.

It may have been a trap, but it was a real kick butt sword, so Finn just said, “You know what? I think I’m cool with that.” Sometimes when you have a totally awesome sword, you just have to accept its quirks.

This acrylic and plastic replica comes from Etsy seller ThePropShop for just $65(USD). The question is, will you be able to put it down after you get it?

Build and Train Endless Toy Robots with Tinkerbots

TinkerBots (formerly known as Kinematics) let you make robots that are easy enough for a child to build. The pieces snap together easily, and you can make things much more complex than a robot dog too. Want to train the dog to walk? Just switch on the Tinketbot’s Power Brain’s recording mode and twist and turn the dog manually. Press play, and it repeats the motion you just programmed. How awesome is that?

The Power Brain has a built-in gyroscope and accelerometer, speaker, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery.

It’s Arduino compatible too, so you can build even more complex creations if you want. You can also program robot movements from your mobile device. Other active modules include motors, pivots, grabbers, and IR and light sensors. You can update any or all of them through the Power Brain when there’s new software available.

TinkerBots are even compatible with LEGO and Technic pieces with the proper adapter blocks in place. The cubes are roughly the size of 4 X 1 LEGO brick, cuboids roughly 4 x 2, and there are two different kinds of angled prism pieces.

This is going to be a great toy for your kids. And you of course. You can get yourself a basic set for $159(USD) on Indiegogo, with bigger sets ranging from $299 to $499.

Nintendo Thwomp Pillow Will Squish Your Wallet

Here’s a worthy weapon to bring to a pillow fight, an officially-licensed Thwomp pillow. If you’re wondering why Nintendo would bother releasing a merchandise for a semi-living obstacle, remember that in some Mario games these dudes are flat out invincible. If they could move Bowser wouldn’t be king.

You can order the Thwomp pillow from ThinkGeek for about $35 (USD) or from Amazon for $25. Or you could always just paint a cinder block and sit on that instead.

Adafruit 3D Printed LED Coat Buttons: The Brightest Buttons to Button

Make your clothes stand out with these LED-equipped and 3D printed buttons. Electronics shop Adafruit shared this project last January to help keep folks visible in snowy winter nights, but unless it’s always bright and sunny where you are then you’ll still find a use for these buttons.

Aside from the 3D printed button cases, the main components of this device are the GEMMA electronic board and the Flora NeoPixel RGB LEDs. Watch the video to find out how to put them together.

As always you can find instructions and links to all components on Adafruit’s website. I’m sure you can make the electronics fit in other 3D printed cases, like a replica of Iron Man’s arc reactor.

The craziest NASA test ever is this giant supersonic Goldberg machine

The craziest NASA test ever is this giant supersonic Goldberg machine

NASA is sending new and bigger spaceships to Mars, which means they need bigger supersonic parachutes. So big, in fact, that they don’t fit in any wind tunnel anymore, so their engineers had to find new ways to test them. New crazy ways. Really crazy. In fact, it’s the craziest test they got so far.

Bungle Portable N64: Shiny Old Console

Bacman member Bungle made this polished, compact and portable Nintendo 64 mod. As far as portable N64 mods go, this is one of the cleanest ones I’ve ever seen. It’s not that pretty – it reminds me of the Sega Genesis controller – but it looks comfortable to hold, which was Bungle’s goal with this mod.

portable nintendo 64 by bungle 620x413magnify

The main reason why this handheld looks so clean is its case, which Bungle made through a process called vacuum forming. Bungle also made the buttons and the d-pad. The portable has a 3.5″ screen and internal batteries that provide up to 4 hours and 15 minutes of play time. You can skip to around 1:10 in Bungle’s demo video below to see him play a game on the portable.

Make a portable browser and head to Bungle’s thread on Bacman for more on the mod. You can also read his build log on Bacman. Bungle said he’s going to make more units of this mod to sell. If you’re interested, register on Bacman and send Bungle a private message.
